Chapter 136: Chapter 135: Malicious Gossip (1 more update)

Before leaving, Xu Niannian saw Yang Cuihua pulling Jin Yu aside for a private talk.

She wouldn’t let her hear.

After getting into the car, Xu Niannian asked Jin Yu, "Hey, what did my mom say to you?"

Jin Yu, hand on the steering wheel and with a meaningful glance, replied, "Your mother told me to take good care of you."

"That’s it? Nothing else?" Xu Niannian asked, eyes wide. She was worried Yang Cuihua might have said something else to Jin Yu, like nurturing a romantic relationship.

But then again, it made sense. As shrewd as Yang Cuihua was, she certainly wouldn’t discuss such things with Jin Yu.

It was one thing to say that to her daughter, but quite another to tell Jin Yu—it might make people think her daughter couldn’t get married off.

"What else were you hoping for?"

Jin Yu thought about the words Yang Cuihua had cautioned him with, a smile in his eyes, but since he was looking ahead, Xu Niannian didn’t see it; she only saw his tight-jawed, handsome face.

"No... I wasn’t hoping for anything, just asking."

Jin Yu drove to Xu Niannian’s place, and then, after having arrived, he left with Xu Niannian again. Aunt Wang from next door saw Jin Yu carrying several parcels into the car and noticed Xu Niannian following him in, she couldn’t help but sneer.

"Tch, that shameless Yang Cuihua." She’s practically throwing her daughter at him—how disgraceful.

But then, on second thought, if she could secure such a good match for her own daughter, she’d send her off too.

Tsk tsk, that’s a soldier with a promising future.

Aunt Wang felt so jealous she could almost burst. Shaking her head, she looked at her own son lying in bed, moping, suddenly remembering she didn’t have a daughter, only a foolish son.

Still hung up on Xu Niannian at this point.

The news about Jin Yu bringing Xu Niannian back today, then taking her and her luggage away, didn’t take long to spread through the entire village.

Auntie Xu felt uneasy hearing the other women in the fields gossip about Yang Cuihua’s good fortune, her daughter marrying a man with a car and money.

"That old hussy," she muttered bitterly. "What’s so good about her, a dog of a woman who sells her own daughter."

Her comment was so sour it could make teeth fall out.

One of the women couldn’t stand it anymore, "Yo, Xu Guilan, are you feeling sour? My teeth ache just listening to you. Her daughter is beautiful; there isn’t a girl as pretty as her in ten villages. Finding a good man is her skill. If your daughter could land such a good match, you’d cling to it too."

Auntie Xu was known in the village as the second fiercest woman after Yang Cuihua, rarely provoked by anyone.

Though the woman speaking wasn’t quarrelsome, she had many men in her family, three grown sons, and so she wasn’t afraid of Xu Guilan.

Auntie Xu turned shades of green and white, outraged. She threw down her hoe and lunged to attack, "I’ll kill you, you wretched woman!"

The woman saw Auntie Xu get serious and quickly ran back. If it wasn’t for others in the field noticing and holding Auntie Xu back, things would have escalated.

Liu Guimei was also in the field; hearing Auntie Xu’s bitterness, she didn’t bother to argue.

Firstly, because she and Auntie Xu were from the same village, and secondly, she understood Auntie Xu all too well.

Arguing with her was like talking to a wall, pointless.

After being pulled apart, Auntie Xu was so angry she was panting for air. It took a while before she could suppress her anger. Seeing Liu Guimei not only didn’t come to help her but continued hoeing made her even angrier.

Approaching her, thinking of the nearly empty grain bin at home, she tried to sound as sincere as possible.
