Chapter 672: Pitch-Black Pursuer

The setting sun bathed the landscape in a warm, golden glow, casting long shadows across the ground.

"That’s enough for today," Yaeger said as she noticed the sky turning orange with dusk.

Angelica had slain 108 jackals in a row. Her arms hung limply at her sides, and every step felt like a mountain to climb. "Princess… I think I got stronger," she murmured, her voice faint with exhaustion.

Yet alongside her fatigue came a strange sense of freedom. The past few hours had been sheer torment, harder than anything she had ever faced. ‘I’d rather fish all day in the open sea than battle Magic Beasts for even a few hours,’ she thought wearily.

The thrill she felt after slaying the black bear had long since faded, drowned by the endless waves of grueling combat. All she had known for hours was pain and exhaustion. Her body ached, and her spirit was nearly drained dry.

Sensing her fatigue, Yaeger walked over. "Don't grow tired of it. There are things in life that must be experienced. Keep pushing forward, and one day, you'll see that fighting can be exhilarating."

It might have sounded like sweet-talking, but it worked like a charm on Angelica.

"Yes! I’ll do my best!" Angelica lifted her head, eyes filled with resolve. To Angelica, every word from the Princess was gospel. All she needed to do was follow her lead.

"Good. Keep training here until your body remembers every movement," Yaeger said with a nod. Looking toward the horizon, she added, "It’s getting dark. Let’s head back."

As she spoke, a green needle appeared in her hand. Without warning, she gently tapped it into Angelica’s side. A rush of pure life energy surged through Angelica. In an instant, her exhaustion vanished, replaced by refreshing vitality.

‘Ah, my whole body feels like it’s being refilled from the inside out…’ A wave of pleasure swept through her, making her cheeks glow as if she were basking in the warmth of sunlight.

It was just Yaeger’s usual recovery method. Thankfully, the euphoric feeling faded as fast as it came, and Angelica stayed firmly grounded.

"Let’s move," Yaeger said as soon as she saw Angelica had recovered, then started walking ahead.

"Right behind you!" Angelica said, catching up at once.

As they neared Aoma Village, a group of figures came into view at the gate. Clad in black armor with upright stances, they were unmistakably members of the Direct Army from Jade City.

Their captain, Erwin, stepped forward and questioned the gate sentries. "Why is the village sealed off?"

"A plague broke out here, sir," the young guard answered.

At the word ‘plague,’ several of the soldiers stiffened, their expressions flashing with unease.

"How long has it been?" asked Erwin, his face calm though he cursed his luck silently.

"A few days ago, sir. But earlier today, the angel of the Goddess of Light descended and completely cured the village," the soldier explained.

Erwin raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?"

"Absolutely, sir. If you doubt it, you can check with the church inside," the guard insisted.

Erwin paused, then shook his head. "Never mind. I’m here on a fugitive hunt. Have either of you seen this person?"

He signaled to a soldier behind him, who stepped forward and showed a portrait.

"The Black-hearted Princess!" the two guards blurted out in surprise as they recognized the face.

"You’ve seen her?" Erwin's tone grew tense, picking up on their startled reaction. Could he really be this lucky, stumbling onto the Empire’s most wanted criminal in such a remote village?

But both guards shook their heads vigorously. "No, sir. Never seen her."

"Then why were you shouting like that?" Erwin snapped, his voice rising sharply. The startled guards shrank back, trembling under his glare.

"Let’s move." Without giving them a second look, Erwin turned away and signaled to his men. The black-armored soldiers immediately followed his lead, pivoting to leave.

Just as he was about to walk off, something crossed Erwin’s mind. He turned back and asked, "That so-called angel… are they still inside the village?"

There was something off about this so-called angel. Erwin couldn’t shake the suspicion. ‘Could it be that the Black-hearted Princess is masquerading as this angel?’ The odds were slim, but he wouldn’t rest easy without confirming it himself.

Whether the angel had truly cured the plague or was just a fraud didn’t concern him. That wasn’t his mission.

"I think he’s still inside," the young guard answered, not entirely sure.

"Go get him. Now," Erwin commanded sharply.

‘Why not go in yourself?’ the soldier thought with a scowl. It quickly dawned on him that the captain might just be afraid.

‘Decked out in that armor, yet trembling like a mouse. What a joke.’ With that, he moved the barricade and strode off in frustration. ‘These people really have no clue how amazing the Goddess of Light is.’ After witnessing a genuine miracle, his faith had only deepened.

Moments later, he returned with Micha at his side.

"Who are you?" Erwin asked, frowning. This so-called angel was just an old priest?

"I serve the Church. My name is Micha. Are you seeking an audience with the Lord Angel?" he asked, standing tall. His position granted him enough authority that there was no need to bow.

"I am," Erwin replied with a nod. "Is he around?"

"The Lord Angel departed several hours ago," Micha replied.

"So you’ve no idea where he went?" Erwin pressed.

Micha shook his head. "His comings and goings are known only to him."

"Is that so? Then describe him for me," Erwin demanded.

Micha hesitated for a moment but answered with vague details.

"And the gender?" Erwin’s interest sharpened upon hearing about the mask and cloak.

"Male," Micha answered.

"You’re certain?" Erwin narrowed his eyes.

"Yes. His voice and mannerisms seemed distinctly male," Micha said with quiet certainty.

"Tch. Waste of time. We're done here." Satisfied the angel wasn’t his target, Erwin called off the search and turned back toward Jade City.

‘A plague zone like this? There’s no way that Black-hearted Princess would risk staying here,’ he thought, giving the village one last glance before heading out.

The moment he turned away, a dark shadow flickered into the village like a phantom and vanished before anyone noticed.

After the soldiers had gone, Micha returned to the church, rubbing his chin in confusion. ‘Now that I think about it… is the Lord Angel even male?’ Apparently, he had just made up everything on the spot.

Meanwhile, in the living room of the village chief’s home, Yaeger gently set Angelica down from her arms.

Angelica stood frozen, her face glowing red with excitement. ‘Princess carried me. I could just die happy right now!’
