Chapter 991: A Lie For Her Son
Chapter 991: Chapter 991: A Lie For Her Son
Lord Hamel remained silent as he contemplated.
But one of them refused to keep worrying only about the Household. She chose to solely care about Eugene just this once.
[I’ve stopped fighting since I’m just a second wife, and the more I talk back, the more she targets Eugene.
I have allowed her to do as she pleases to me as long as she won’t have my son hurt or killed.
I’ve done my best holding on all these years for this family.
But what is it all for if my son dies in the end?]
"Please have mercy on my son. I know he had committed crimes. But it’s because I didn’t raise him well. Please, don’t execute him," Eugene’s mother said. She kneeled and bowed deeply.
[He is still his son. Can’t he at least look out for him too, even if just in front of others?]
Eugene’s mother glanced at Lord Hamel with a begging look, pleading with him to at least ask for their son’s life to be spared, even if he was imprisoned.
"..." Lord Hamel was speechless as he thought about what he should do.
[Eugene is still my son indeed. He may have orchestrated the rebellion, but I did let him do it in case he succeeds. But our family is the second most powerful in Sibruh. What if the Marquess uses this to crush us? If he blames all of us, our whole family may be executed.]
Lord Hamel was not uttering any words carelessly since it might put their whole family at risk.
He still thinks of Eugene as his son, but he feared that this might get all of them executed and bring the fall of their household.
Moreover, he had already talked with Eugene in advance that if he failed, he must not involve their household and clarify that it was his own doing.
They already had that agreement, but Eugene was still his son.
Lady Hamel frowned when she noticed her husband hesitate.
[Is he seriously contemplating this?! We should not get involved and put all the blame on Eugene. He was the only one who pushed for this anyway. We simply knew. It’s his fault for being so stupid and assuming he would succeed! Look at him getting caught so easily! We don’t need him in the household. We never did! He should never have been born in the first place.]
Lady Hamel held Lord Hamel’s hand and gave him a look that meant he should choose only what’s best for the Household, not as the father of Eugene.
It may seem like Lady Hamel was doing this to save the household from ruin. However, the truth was, she simply wanted to get rid of Eugene to ensure only her son would be the heir.
Lady Hamel could not directly have Eugene killed since he was still her husband’s child. Thus, she hurt him with her words instead of pretending like it was only part of education and discipline.
But the truth was she hated Eugene’s mother, and thus him, since for her, they were unnecessarily brought in.
It was because Lady Hamel could no longer bear children after her son was born. Thus, to ensure there was another heir, Lord Hamel got another wife to have another heir in case something happened to the first.
Lady Hamel was irked about it, though, and with her thoughts, it was clear she could not accept them ever.
She glared at the second wife to stop pleading. But the latter did not stop and escalated it further instead.
"Please spare my son. Please execute me instead. I was the one who talked him into this because I felt so insecure with our standing. I was the one who told him to do all of this," Eugene’s mother lied.
[Yes, this is all my fault. If I weren’t the second wife, my son wouldn’t have to be mistreated. He wouldn’t have hungered for power like this. This is my fault for not being able to give him what he deserved. If this is the last thing I can do for him, then I will.]
Eugene’s mother was ready to throw away her life.
Meanwhile...
[Hah! Idiot. She could have survived this if she hadn’t said that. She just allowed me to finally be rid of them both. Once they’re both dead, none of them could threaten my son’s position.]
Lady Hamel was delighted by the second wife’s actions. She gasped and acted all shocked as she said, "Heavens! How could you two do such a thing behind our backs! After everything this household has done for you, this is how you repay it?!"
Lady Hamel found her confidence to speak since Eugene’s mother had already admitted that this was his fault.
She quickly made the two seem like ingrates and the Hamel Household and her, as innocent. She was protecting the household since she believed it was for her son to rule next. But if her son was removed as the heir or she was not the first wife, she would likely cast them aside quickly.
[I’m so tired of her antics. When will she ever grow up? What’s important right now is Eugene’s life.]
The second wife gritted her teeth but did not talk back. She simply glanced at Lord Hamel instead, asking for help.
"..."
Lord Hamel understood what his second wife was trying to do. But he also knew it meant further lying to the Crown after they had already given a warning to be honest.
Ferdinand and Alwin glanced at Arabella for the truth.
They already had an inkling that Eugene’s mother was just trying to save him, but it was better safe than sorry, so they relied on her ability.
{She’s lying. She just wants to save her son from death.
She had suffered all sorts of mistreatment from Lady Hamel, so her son wouldn’t be targeted by her.
She believes Eugene became what he was because she could not give him what he wanted.
As for Lady Hamel, she wants to use this chance to get rid of the two and ensure that her son would be the only heir of the Hamel Household.
As for the other nobles, they were indeed clueless about their sons’ part in the rebellion.}
Arabella explained what she heard to Alwin and Ferdinand.
