Chapter 976: Chapter 976: It Was An Illegal Mine
Eugene agreed so his family was helping him.
His family knew what they were doing though and never had Eugene or his people stay at their official home.
The rebels were always housed in properties not written in their name but of their other comrades.
It was why Ferdinand and the knights had caught some nobles whom they thought were the ones who led the rebellion but were just part of the group.
Some were also made to believe they were truly leading it not knowing they were only manipulated to believe so. Thus, their confession seemed honest.
As for the reason why Eugene specifically targeted the former villagers from earlier as his temporary men, it was because he planned to continue mining that location.
Arabella learned from Eugene and his close associates that it was Eugene who had the area mined when a landslide in one of the areas showed signs of several ore deposits.
Eugene’s family owned two mines here in Sibruh and it was one of their sources of income.
Thus, when one of Eugene’s men who happened to have visited the village saw the signs of possible income, he immediately informed Eugene for a commission of the earnings.
Not wanting to share the earnings with his family, Eugene kept the mine a secret and did not register it.
Thus, it was an illegal mine.
To the villagers and miners, Eugene had his men lie that the papers were in process but the Marquess had agreed they could begin.
The villagers thought the mine was registered and they continued mining it.
However, when there were repeated cave-ins that led to a lot of casualties, the Marquess’ family had it closed and intentionally caused cave-ins at the entrance so no one would continue mining it.
It was because Eugene was questioned by the Marquess, he pretended that he had only earned a little from it so the Marquess and other households would not become interested in it.
Eugene planned to continue mining it once he was the Marquess so he could continue monopolizing the earnings.
As for the cave-ins, Eugene blamed it all on the Sibruh family. He said they were sabotages from the Marquess’ family who wanted the mine for themselves. Thus, the miners grew hateful of the Sibruh family.
Eugene knew there was still a lot to be mined there so he planned to use the villagers to once again mine it and monopolize the profits.
It was quite the string of lies and selfishness without a care about the lives of the people he was putting in danger with his actions.
Eugene’s crimes were punishable with execution.
As for the rebels who are working as Eugene’s men, they used to be ordinary citizens. Thus, as long as they had not yet killed anyone, they could be pardoned.
Arabella reported everything she heard to Alwin so they could work together to prevent Eugene Hamel from causing more problems and endangering people’s lives.
"With this, we already have most of the information we need.
Let’s return to the castle and regroup with the others.
I’ll have Riley the others continue observing here and gather proof for us," Alwin concluded.
Arabella glanced outside.
The sun was setting.
Rendell would be alarmed if they do not meet up before it gets dark.
Ferdinand would also worry if he notices she was not yet back at the Imperial Palace.
"Alright, let’s go back," Arabella agreed.
Today was productive so it should be enough.
They did not find any more spies but they found the real ringleader of the rebellion.
Riley and other magicians would gather as much evidence as possible so they could catch Eugene Hamel.
’My task here is done,’ Arabella concluded.
She was satisfied with today’s outcome.
This was what she could do for now and she knew she needed to learn to be content with what she could do and let others do rest.
There’s no need for her to do everything.
She still had stacks of documents in her office she should work on so she decided it was best to do those.
Her contribution here for today was enough.
Alwin then teleported them back to the castle and informed Rendell and her knights about their findings.
None of them found any more spies and thus, concluded that Sibruh was clear or any spy left was too good at hiding.
Alwin then teleported them back to the Imperial Palace.
All of them had dinner together as they discussed their observations in Sibruh before they parted.
Alwin returned to Sibruh to finally conduct experiments with Ivan.
Rendell shifted with Rowan for guard duty and the other lights retired for the knight.
As for Arabella, she headed to her office and worked on all the documents on her table.
After three hours, she was done with all the documents and finally had her bath before retiring for the night.
She was just about to go to sleep when there was a knock on her door.
"Your Majesty, this is Riley. His Majesty wishes to speak with you..."
Upon hearing those words, Arabella quickly ran to her door and almost forgot she was already in her sleepwear.
Thankfully, her maids hang a coat right beside the door for her to use in cases like this.
Arabella grabbed in and wore it quickly.
Even if it’s Riley, she cannot let him into her room at this time of night or else rumors would spread.
Thus, she would simply speak with him by the door.
When she opened the door, Riley handed her a box.
"My apologies for disturbing Your Majesty at this hour. His Majesty asked me to deliver this. This is a magic orb used for communication. It is already connected to His Majesty," Riley explained.
"Oh my, thank you. I haven’t gone to bed yet, so it’s alright," Arabella smiled.
She was rather glad Riley brought this here.
It meant she would be able to speak with Ferdinand before sleeping!
Riley left immediately before anyone saw him aside from their trusted guards.
It would be bad for rumors to spread that Arabella receives visitors at this hour.
Arabella excitedly returned inside her bedroom with the magic tool.
