Chapter 927: Chapter 927: Chastising the Most Powerful

"Thank you," the Pope smiled at Alwin, and used his powers to let Cassandra and the four paladins see Lindon.

"He truly looks different from the one who was executed!" Cassandra gasped.

The four paladins gawked as well.

"Yes, because he is different from the one who was executed. He simply occupied that body," Alwin explained.

He refrained from saying more since there was information they could not share yet.

"Magician, what is your real name?" The Pope asked Lindon.

"..."

Lindon closed his eyes and refused to speak.

[Why should I tell him? So he can dig for information about me? No way.]

Lindon did something, and his soul floated aimlessly in the circular prison.

Arabella no longer heard any thoughts from him.

"What happened?!" Cassandra asked when Lindon’s soul floated without any reaction to them, no matter what they said.

"He always does this when we try to question him.

Even while imprisoned, he has a way to use dark magic and make himself ’sleep’ in this state.

Magic doesn’t work on him in this state since all souls are protected by the gods.

As such, we could not get information from him," Alwin explained, hinting that perhaps divine power might work.

The Pope picked it up and said, "May I try using divine power?"

"Please do," Alwin reset the prison’s security features to allow the Pope’s divine power to enter and reach Lindon’s soul.

The Pope then tried using Divine Power to wake up Lindon. However, it did not work either.

"It seems it is beyond my abilities, either.

I believe it’s because Divine Power is given to us to protect humanity.

Even in this state, he was still originally human and likely to be one again in his next life.

I can help free souls that wander aimlessly so they can join the reincarnation cycle and move to their next life.

But it seems I cannot meddle in this either.

Or this magician is using something to prevent it," the Pope explained to Cassandra and the four paladins.

Arabella learned from the Pope and Alwin’s discussion that souls are immune to spells and outside powers since they are foundations for a next life and thus are protected by the gods so they cannot be ruined or destroyed due to selfish reasons.

This was also why Alwin could not simply remove Evania from Renee’s body and had to go to Umbra to have someone fetch her.

Ferdinand and the older, long-lived races once knew how to deal with souls when necessary, but it had long been forbidden. Further, even in the past, when it came to souls, they had strict rules to follow in whatever interaction they made.

After letting the Pope and his comrades familiarize themselves with Lindon’s presence and the dark magic oozing from him, Ferdinand finally said, "I believe this should be enough."

"Yes, thank you for showing him to us," the Pope smiled.

They conversed a bit more about Lindon and the dark magic he was using before the Pope also spoke with Alvis about his sudden arrival, which caused tremors in a vast part of Eliora.

"We have verified rumors in various parts of Eliora about weeds suddenly growing prevalent and out of proportion after the tremor that you caused," the Pope pointed out to Alvis.

A few drops of Alwin’s royal elf blood dripping onto the soil had caused a massive tree to grow.

Meanwhile, Alvis’ mana in his angered state caused weeds to grow. In his calm state, if he allowed his mana to leak and spread, it would have caused the plants to grow and flourish.

For instance, flowers blooming earlier than supposed to be, or trees bearing fruit before their season.

But since Alvis was angry and ready to destroy, what grew were weeds such as wild vines and the like.

It must have caused trouble for farmers who had already cleaned their farmlands and nobles who had gardens.

"Hmmp. They should be grateful there were no casualties.

And those flora you call weeds will nurture the soil much more than any fertilizer would as they wither.

I do feel bad for the farmers, but it will help their original plants grow better in the long run.

They just need to let it be; all of those weeds will be gone on their own in a few more days.

And it’s not my fault that something happened to my nephew.

I believe you and these two are more at fault for me arriving in that state," Alvis eyed the Pope before glancing at Ferdinand and Raymond.

"I volunteered for the task. And it’s my fault for not being careful enough," Alwin quickly spoke for their defense.

"I know you volunteered. And yes, you should have been more careful. But what happened was not your fault, Alwin.

Firstly, it’s His Holiness and the Great Temple’s task to watch over the poison and the anti-magic weapons to ensure that no one gets their hands on it and provokes another war.

Second, it’s also their task to prevent necromancers from arising since their Creator was the first to forbid it and convinced the other gods.

Third, His Majesty and His Excellency should not have underestimated Crux just because it’s a small kingdom with a chaotic system. This was exactly why the long-lived races were almost wiped out during the Great War. But then again, they were both in hibernation when it happened, so they only saw the aftermath and did not experience everything firsthand," Alvis explained.

[He just chastised all of them?!!] Cassandra and the Paladins were shocked that Alvis scolded all the most powerful people in the room.

’Haha. He is probably one of the few who can do this and be scot-free,’ Arabella internally chuckled at the funny expression they were making.

Their shock was understandable, though, especially with the standing these three have - a Pope, an Emperor, and a Prime Minister.

But Alvis did have the right to chastise them since his points were valid. And this was a private, unofficial, and informal meeting.

"Yes, my deepest apologies for failing in our responsibilities. It was exactly why I headed here myself...."

The Pope once again made the long explanations he had made in this room when Alvis and Alwin were not around.
