Chapter 919: Chapter 919: Why Did You Do It

"Are you full now? Or would you like more food?" Alvis asked his nephew.

"I’m full, thank you," Alwin replied, and took a sip of his tea instead.

[Why is everyone here instead of going to work?

Don’t they have a lot to do with the war still in progress?

It must have been several hours since I passed out...]

"Alwin, the war is long over," Arabella clarified.

"L-long over? What’s that supposed to mean?" Alwin frowned.

[I’m sure we won if it’s over. There’s no way we’d lose. But what does she mean by ’long over’?]

"It’s been more than a week since you passed out," Arabella clarified.

"A-A week?!!!" Alwin’s eyes looked like they might fall from their sockets at how shocked he was. "I was unconscious for that long?!"

Alwin looked at his elders for confirmation as if Arabella was playing a prank on him.

"Y-Yes, Alwin. It’s been a week," Alvis answered his unspoken question.

"It would have been longer if the Pope did not heal you," Raymond added.

[So this is why they even asked the Pope to heal me?!]

Alwin was horrified.

"This is the consequence of your actions," Raymond sighed.

It was time for the serious talk.

Everyone took a deep breath, preparing themselves for the heavy topic.

"Why did you use a forbidden spell?" Ferdinand inquired, direct to the point as usual.

[I have permission from the Overseer to use it.

He won’t get angry, right?]

Alwin gulped nervously before he explained.

"I-I had no choice at the time. It was the quickest way I thought I could save her. If I didn’t use it, she could have died on the spot."

"Then, why did you use your mana cores?"

"For the same reason, Your Majesty.

I thought that if I didn’t heal her immediately, she would have died.

The former spell I used would have been useless," Alwin replied.

"How do you feel about the lady you saved?

Did you feel like you must save her at all costs?

Could you not bear the thought of her dying?

Did you feel something weird or special about her?"

Ferdinand asked this just in case Alwin found his mate.

His elders had been pondering as to why Alwin would go so far for a human when Alwin was someone who had remained guarded and biased when it came to them due to his past experience.

Alwin already denied this, but it could be that he may not have realized it yet.

After all, age was not a barrier.

If the lady Alwin saved was his mate, it meant they would still be together even if not immediately.

Perhaps Alwin would have to wait until it was their time to be together. Or it could be that Alwin would be with the lady in the lady’s next life.

This was something they finally learned after asking Elrond some questions.

[Why is he asking me this?]

Alwin blinked twice at Ferdinand’s questions and gasped when he realized why he asked about it.

"I don’t have any particular feelings about her!

I just didn’t want to watch someone die in front of me when I could have saved her.

I knew if I didn’t help her, I would regret it since I knew I could save her," Alwin quickly explained.

"Are you sure you did not feel anything special for her?" Ferdinand asked again just in case Alwin was just in denial like he once did.

"Not at all, Your Majesty." Alwin shook his head violently.

[There’s no way I’d ever get a mate. Never.]

Alwin was still very much against the idea of ever getting a mate.

"I see. Alright then. Did you know that what you did was prohibited?"

Alwin gulped nervously at Ferdinand’s question.

"Yes, Your Majesty.

But I have received permission from the Overseer to use it when I deem necessary," Alwin admitted.

"Where did you hear about the forbidden spell, and why did you learn it from Elrond?"

[I have no one to mention...

I have no choice but to tell part of the truth.

I can reason that it was when I learned he used it to heal my mana core, but if he asked the Overseer, he would know I learned about it several months back...]

Alwin pondered what he should say.

"I-I dreamt about it.

In my dream, it was the Overseer teaching me, so I visited him months ago and inquired about it.

He said that there must be a reason why I dreamed about it.

And he surprisingly taught me, and gave me permission to use it when I deem necessary," Alwin explained.

[He’s not lying, but he also seems to be holding back something.

Since when did he begin lying to us like this?

And about something this important as well.]

Alwin’s elders noticed he was not revealing everything.

{You better not tell on me!

This is something related to the past.

Don’t tell them about it.}

Alwin recalled to warn Arabella.

’It is?! But they already noticed he’s not saying everything!’

{Alright. I won’t.

But they already noticed you are holding something back.

Improve your acting or something.

But you should be honest where you can.

They had been worried about you this whole time.}

Arabella didn’t want to lie either, since Alwin’s elders were just worried about him.

They were desperately trying to understand Alwin’s reasons for his actions in order to know what to do that’s best for him.

However, the past was not something they could reveal yet. Especially after what Arabella experienced a few days ago.

’Right. I must inform Alwin about that as well.

But I’ll save it for later.’

Arabella wanted to let his elders speak with him first.

She hoped they would understand each other and resolve this nicely.

"Is that all?" Ferdinand asked, waiting for Alwin to reveal what he was holding back.

Alwin was silent for a few seconds before he replied, "Yes, Your Majesty."

"..." Ferdinand fell silent at Alwin’s response.

[What is it that he cannot tell us?

We could help him if we knew what he’s going through.

If we can’t, then we can at least watch over him.]

Ferdinand, Raymond, and Alvis all pondered what Alwin could be hiding that he would lie to them like this.
