Chapter 546: Reopening an Old Wound
"I, I see," the two guests were depressed at the hit of reality. But they were relieved they could at least watch Evania from afar.
"Your Majesty, please help. Please help me. I don’t know what to do," Renee knocked on the door herself. She sounded like she was crying.
"Please stop, Her Majesty is in a meeting," the knight stopped Renee.
"If you want to see her now, you may. But you are not allowed to reveal yourselves," Arabella said.
Raymond and the elders left since they were assured Alwin was in control of the two guests.
Meanwhile, Alwin sat in the far corner of the room with their guests and made a barrier so all of them would be invisible.
"Let her in," Arabella said, and Rendell went to open the door.
Rendell and Rowan went outside and stayed by the door. Only Riley remained inside, plus Alwin and the guests who were not visible to Renee.
Once it was opened, Renee ran to her, tears trickling from her eyes.
[Why is she crying?! I want to protect and comfort her just like in the old times.]
[Her appearance is indeed different but this is Evania!]
Darcus and Orpheus stared at Renee with longing.
"Your Majesty, I had been waiting for you to return," Renee said as she dried her tears. She gave her formal greeting after.
"What’s wrong? What happened?"
"Marcus. Marcus had been contacting me," Renee said, and Arabella was wide-eyed.
’Why didn’t Riley report anything to me?!’ she glanced at him, and the latter shook his head.
[I don’t know anything about this, Your Majesty. I haven’t received a report.] Riley answered her unvoiced question through his thoughts.
The one assigned to watch over Renee had already been changed.
[Who’s Marcus?!!]
The two guests were alarmed at hearing a man’s name from Evania.
They were disappointed that Evania did not head here because of sensing their presence but because of another man instead.
They glanced at Alwin for an explanation, but he gestured it would be for later. Alwin had limited the information he told them.
[Ugh, this is why I don’t like people in love.] Alwin thought in exasperation when the two kept pestering him.
{Who’s that man?!}
{Why is she crying because of him?!}
{I said, later. And I don’t know why she’s crying either. Why won’t you listen to her and know for yourselves?} Alwin said and ignored them.
"I see. Let’s be seated first," Arabella tried to be calm.
Thankfully, Renee obediently did.
"What did he tell you?"
"He said he recognized me when he saw me at Medeus. He said he would like to meet since he wanted to speak with me. I told him to wait since I needed to think about it. I have promised Your Majesty I won’t do anything again without telling you, so I decided to wait until you return," Renee began.
"I see. Well done. How did he contact you?"
Arabella probed since if it was a messenger bird it would have been spotted by the knights and magicians.
They would have captured an unfamiliar messenger bird entering the palace.
Mails from Zygos would have been checked at the borders first too.
"Someone who said he was a servant of the one who helped me last time pops out of nowhere and delivers the letters to me. He’s quite mysterious and refuses to introduce himself so I’m not even sure if the letters were true," Renee thankfully doubted the person.
’I see. No wonder the magician watching over her did not notice. It was someone from that entity so he must be able to hide his presence very well.’
[We were not at fault.]
Riley sighed in relief. He thought he would get scolded later for missing such important information.
"When did Marcus begin to contact you? And how often?"
"Around two months ago. And he sends at least one letter a week. He kept writing to me, saying he knew I was Evelyn, and he was ready to help me get my revenge since he had investigated quite a lot after my death. He knew that my supposed best friend and my husband were the ones who plotted my death."
’They have already talked that much but we were clueless!’
"He’s quite skilled to have been able to learn that much. Why were you so alarmed earlier?"
"Ah, about that, Marcus had been contacting me more often lately. He wanted to meet me as soon as possible. The other day, he said he was at the borders outside Valeria, and he would wait for me there. But I could not leave my duties, so I told him to wait a bit more since I hadn’t decided yet. But yesterday, he sent me another letter. And he was already here in Riva. He wanted to meet me and said he was ready to leave with me as soon as I agreed."
’What?! How was he able to enter Riva?!’ Arabella and Alwin glanced at Riley.
[How is that possible?! All the barriers around Riva were strengthened so we should have been able to sense even magicians trying to enter in disguise. Regis would have been able to feel a magician entering in case I wasn’t here then.] Riley was as confused as they were.
"I received another letter from him just a while ago. These came with it. These are parts of publications that Fatima had made people write about me," Renee brought out an envelope she had hidden in her clothes.
Riley checked it and cast a barrier around it before handing it to Arabella.
Arabella was horrified at the contents.
The publication’s contents were about Fatima finally revealing the "truth" about Evelyn.
Fatima had asked people to publish that Evelyn was the one who repeatedly cheated first which was why Chester was brokenhearted and ended up trying to seek comfort in other ladies when Evelyn was gone.
The publications opened Evania’s old wounds as Evelyn since it even said that Evelyn had aborted her pregnancies several times because Chester was the father and she hated him.
They even published that Evelyn’s death was suicide.
They said it was because Chester discovered that she was pregnant with their child and was about to abort it again.
He asked her to part with her lover and give birth to their child for an heir. Yet, they said Evelyn chose to die instead.
