Chapter 1013: Chapter 1013: It’s not Fun to Lose
If they used platinum coins here, it would be obvious they were from the richest here in Valeria.
[I thought I already planned this thoroughly. Yet, I forgot something that’s most basic and important to normal people.]
Ferdinand disliked how he made a mistake.
None of them were normal people here though so it was alright.
"Do you have other coins?" Ferdinand asked Alwin.
[I don’t want to disappoint her after telling her she could buy souvenirs!]
Ferdinand hoped Alwin had other coins.
"I have gold coins. It’s the lowest I have," Alwin replied.
These two were crazy rich and did not need to worry about money so they had only ever transacted with platinum and gold. Thus, Alwin did not have lower coins either.
Ferdinand does not usually buy anything either so they do not bring money for him even when he travels.
Arabella would not have considered things like this either if not for Dimo who had taught her well in her past life.
She learned to transact with silver and gold and never used platinum coins on her transactions in the dark guid since it would give away her identity to be of richest nobles and ruling households or royalty.
Arabella would only need to buy souvenirs for her maids and assistants so her purchases would likely be only a few silver coins
’Social events will be held soon. Should I buy gifts for ladies I have tea parties with?’
But buying gifts without a clue of their preferences might only make her gifts seem like an insult.
For gifts for the noble ladies she would meet, it was best to give them expensive jewelry or items which they could already tell at a glance had much value.
A gift that would cost less than a gold coin would make them misunderstand her intentions.
Thus, she concluded to stick with buying souvenirs only for her maids and assistants.
"I’ll retrieve some from the palace," Alwin volunteered. He vanished immediately after Ferdinand nodded.
"I’m sorry. I forgot to think about money," Ferdinand apologized to her while they waited for Alwin.
"It’s alright. Most of us don’t use it on a daily basis like commoners do so it’s okay. I already enjoyed watching the events earlier," Arabella assured him. "Being with you in a lively event like this and watching and experiencing it together is more important."
"!!!" Ferdinand perked up at her words and kissed her forehead. "Being with you in an event like this is also more important to me."
With this, not having money with them did not ruin this experience for them.
’It’s so nice to be able to talk with each other honestly like this,’ Arabella thought.
Alwin returned just a few minutes later with silver and bronze coins.
Teleportation is indeed a wonder. It’s something Arabella coveted but had accepted she could only learn about it once they had retired in Estrella.
"Thank you," Arabella and Ferdinand said as they received a pouch of coins from Alwin.
With money on hand, they headed to the stalls to experience the festivities and buy souvenirs.
Of course, Alwin used magic to change their appearance to what nobles in the area looked like so their noble way of speaking and behaving would be reasonable.
Arabella tried some of the games but she was bad with most of it.
Meanwhile Ferdinand was good in all of it so she could not help but give him a quizzical look as she wondered how many festivals like this he had experienced his whole life.
But then again, there was no point in asking since he likely would not even recall most of it.
"This is the first time I tried games like this in a festival here in Valeria. I have keen eyes and ears and quick reaction time so I can pull off the games easily," Ferdinand explained.
What she was thinking about was probably too obvious on her face.
"Sorry about not being keen enough and slow to react," Arabella muttered.
She just felt like complaining out of frustration from losing in all the games when Ferdinand won everything in the first try without even trying to win.
It somehow felt unfair since she did not get even the lowest prize even when she did her best.
It was not fun to lose in all the games she tried after all.
Ah, but at least, she could say she had tried instead of shying away because she couldn’t.
"That’s not what I meant!" Ferdinand quickly said.
He wondered what to say to soothe her but did not know what was best to say.
Arabella watched him as he tried to come up with something. Somehow, she felt like tormenting him a bit to make him understand what it feels like to be the loser.
"I have trained my whole life, even in this body to achieve this.
So you don’t need to feel bad. It’s not that you are bad at it.
These games are just easier for me because they rely on things I’m already good at.
And there are a lot of other things you’re good at.
You can just tell me what prize you want from these games, I’ll win it for you.
All of the prizes I’ve won so far are for you," Ferdinand said.
"For me?" Arabella tilted her head as she glanced at the prizes Rendell was carrying for them.
Arabella was so focused on the games so she hadn’t been hearing his thoughts.
Looking at the prizes, none of them were things Ferdinand would ever need or want for himself.
All of his choices for the prizes were things she could use or might like to keep.
"Ah, indeed... Why do I have to win them myself when I have you?" Arabella said in realization.
She did not need to feel bad that she was bad at it since Ferdinand was winning for her anyway.
"Indeed! What else would you like? I’ll get them for you!" Ferdinand said, ready to move where she wanted to.
He was happy to be relied on even in matters like this.
