Chapter 145: Lifetimes of Pain, Suffering and Sorrow (6)
A dark-skinned young man walked along the roadside. A sad story lingered behind every step he took. He had the worst luck with women—rejected by ninety-nine ladies.
Wandering through downtown, he caught sight of a foreign girl—young, probably around sixteen. He, himself, was twenty.
She stopped him, a bit lost.
"Please... how can I get back to Lagos Airport?" she asked softly. Then added with a slight bow,
"Oh, sorry for not introducing myself—my name is Lyla."
The young man was stunned by this. He looked around, scanning the street. Seeing no one else nearby, he asked hesitantly,
"Pardon... are you talking to me?"
The young lady blinked in surprise.
"Of course, it’s you. Do you see anyone else around?"
It was then the young man realized—she truly was speaking to him. It wasn’t his fault he hesitated; no lady had ever taken the initiative to speak to him before. And this one—this girl standing before him—was a beauty.
Her blonde hair shimmered beneath the sun, and her eyes—those radiant, captivating eyes—left him entranced. The young girl noticed his fixed gaze and blushed, her cheeks tinged pink before she coughed gently.
Realizing himself, the young man turned his head away, slightly embarrassed.
"So, you said you’re going to Lagos Airport, right?" he asked.
The young lady gave a small nod in response.
He didn’t waste time. He began describing the place, explaining that all she needed to do was take a cab, and within five to ten minutes, she would already be at the Lagos Airport.
But when he heard that it was a taxi driver who had dropped her off here—and the outrageous fare he had charged her—he found it so ridiculous, he couldn’t stop himself from chuckling.
The young girl wasn’t naive either. She quickly realized she’d been scammed.
"You’re laughing..." she pouted.
Her expression made him stop, caught off guard by how unexpectedly cute she looked in that moment.
The young lady noticed his laughter had ceased. As she looked back at him, she found his gaze resting softly on her once more. Her whole face flushed again.
"Is there something on my face?" she asked shyly.
Her words snapped him out of it again. He scratched his head in confusion. This wasn’t like him. Even after all the rejections he’d faced, he never behaved like this around other women.
GURGLE!
As he turned to guide her, a loud growl pierced the silence. It was unmistakably the sound of a stomach grumbling. He turned toward the young lady, only to see her face now crimson red, even redder than a tomato. She avoided his gaze, clearly flustered.
Surprised, he let out a soft chuckle.
"Let’s stop by a restaurant and eat before you head off," he offered with a gentle smile.
The young lady’s face lit up at his words. She looked at him and smiled back—warmly, gratefully. Once again, he found himself silently captivated.
"What’s your name?" she asked, her voice curious, noticing his lingering gaze.
When she received no response, she turned to him with a pout.
"I’ve said mine, why won’t you say yours?"
Before she caught on, the young man had snapped out of it, his heart racing. He looked at her, the foreign young lady standing beside him.
"Aren’t you... cautious of me?" he asked quietly.
"You know we’re basically strangers."
The young girl stared at him, then smiled with a softness that pierced the air.
"I don’t know why, but around you... I feel calm. Peaceful. Happy."
"And I have this gut feeling..." she continued, voice gentle as the wind,
"that you wouldn’t hurt me."
The young man looked at the girl before him.
"Is this... a confession?" he wondered inwardly before shaking his head. There was no way a girl like her would fall for someone like him. He had already been rejected by countless women from his homeland—and she was a foreign beauty. He was certain she came from a place far more refined, far more distant.
"Hmph, what’s your name? Why are you trying to hide it?" the young girl pouted.
"My name is Daniel," the young man finally replied, his eyes meeting hers.
"Drakion... that’s a nice name," the young lady said with delight.
Daniel’s expression twitched.
"I said Daniel."
"But I like calling you Drakion more than Daniel," she said simply, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
When he heard this, he frowned... but when he saw her cute, pleading puppy eyes, something within him melted. Against his own will, he found himself nodding in agreement.
The young lady jumped with joy, while the young man simply shook his head, resigned.
"Also, you should start calling me Lyla," the girl added with a stern tone as she turned away. Daniel had no choice but to nod, a silent gesture of compliance.
As they followed Google Maps toward a nearby restaurant, he asked casually,
"Lyla, where do you come from?"
"Well... from the United States of America," she said with a bright smile.
"What about your family?" Daniel pressed on.
"Well, my father is half Japanese and Chinese, and my mother is half American and English," she answered with a small sigh.
When Daniel heard this, his jaw nearly dropped.
Wait... does that mean she’s half Japanese, Chinese, American, and English?!
He felt dizzy just thinking about it.
"That’s not what I meant. I meant, why aren’t they here with you?" Daniel rephrased.
"They’re in their respective places," she replied.
"I’ve just been on a tour across different countries. This time, I picked Nigeria. I never thought I’d meet someone like you."
Minutes passed in easy conversation until they finally arrived at the restaurant. The young lady ordered jollof rice, plantain, and chicken. He ordered the same.
But the eyes of nearly everyone in the restaurant were drawn to them—particularly to her. Her beauty caught attention like a flame in the dark. Whenever she noticed too many stares, she would gently hold Daniel’s hand, whispering,
"I’m scared."
Each time her skin touched his, Daniel’s heart raced wildly, unable to remain calm under her touch.
Once their meal was finished, he paid the bill and helped her into a taxi bound for the airport.
He thought it was just a fleeting encounter.
A brief moment.
A passing Chapter.
But fate... had much more in store.
