Chapter 83: Alex’s true Identity revealed
"Hehe, of course," Cole sneered eerily. "No wonder you can’t beat him at your age; your IQ is too low."
Hearing the black crow’s sarcasm, Jack’s face turned grim, but he muttered in a low voice, "Brother Cole, you have a lot of information, so naturally, I can’t compare to you."
"Please, tell me, what kind of identity does Alex have?"
Cole nodded, tilting his head with a sly grin. "Alright, I’ll tell you. His other identity is the Commander of the Military in the Capital."
"A Commander?" Jack’s face drained of color as his hands clenched into tight fists, the muscles in his cheeks twitching. This was the leading enterprise in the country, with unmatched financial resources. Even compared to the Commander of the entire Capital Army, the Miller family’s industry pales in comparison.
Jack took a deep breath, forcing down the boiling rage in his chest. He gritted his teeth and asked, "How is this possible? How old is he? It can’t be Alex—Cole, you must have made a mistake in your information; it can’t be him!"
Jack tried to deny it vehemently, but seeing the unchanged smirk on Cole’s face, the fear in his heart grew exponentially.
"He’s not old enough, but his father was. His dead father was also the Commander."
Cole seemed to anticipate Jack’s disbelief. He reached out, adjusting the hood on his head, and said slowly, "It’s said that his father used to travel the country under the guise of tourism, rarely staying in City A. What did you do during that period? You couldn’t find any news, could you? Don’t foolishly think this is all a coincidence."
Jack’s face turned a sickly shade of green, and he shook his head, muttering, "Hehehe, my brother was the Commander of the Military in the Capital City? How is this possible?" He refused to believe his brother was so superior. He didn’t want to believe that Alex had the power to control an entire army. The existence of these two people felt like a thorn lodged in his throat—neither spitting it out nor swallowing it!
Anna, on the other hand, was extremely excited when she heard the news. She had long recognized Alex’s extraordinariness but never expected that he controlled an army. In other words, securing Alex meant landing the best man in the country!
The thought made Anna even more anxious, wishing she could snatch Alex away from Claire immediately. She took a step forward, addressing Cole eagerly, "Then what now? Now that you know he’s the Commander of an Army, how sure are you that you can deal with him?"
Cole didn’t answer Anna’s question directly. Instead, he stretched out three fingers and said, "I’m 30% sure I can kill him. If I had a 40% chance, I might take the risk. If it were 50%, I’d probably be smashed to pieces."
Anna was stunned. The result was far beyond her expectations. Her confidence wavered for a moment, but the determination in her eyes quickly returned. She couldn’t let this chance slip away.
After speaking, Jack turned around, handed his card to Cole, and said, "There are 50 million here. Once the job is done, I’ll send the rest of the balance later."
Cole took the bank card, nodded, and then looked at the corpse lying behind him. "I have a use for this corpse, so I’ll take care of it for the time being."
Naturally, Jack wouldn’t refuse. He immediately and graciously helped Cole load the body into his car. Once everything was arranged, he stopped Anna, who was about to leave.
"Hey!"
Anna paused, turning her head with a puzzled expression. Jack stood at the door with an uncertain look on his face, staring at Anna with complicated eyes. After a moment, he suddenly raised his head, looked at Anna, and said each word deliberately:
"From now on, you’re not allowed to participate in this matter anymore."
Anna was startled. A smile, uglier than a cry, twisted her face as she said, "Uncle, what are you talking about? I’ve helped you so much; how can I not participate?"
"Remember what I said. Don’t meddle in this matter again, or don’t blame me for being rude!" Jack’s eyes darkened as he warned in a cold voice.
"What do you mean?" Anna asked, her eyes wide with shock, her face full of resentment.
"Heh!" Jack sneered, casting a disdainful glance at her. "You should understand what I mean when I say you’re not welcome."
"You..." Anna’s face suddenly turned pale. Watching Jack leave, she trembled with anger. "It has come to this; how can I quit?" she muttered to herself, gritting her teeth. She clenched her fists tightly, seething with resentment.
"Jack, just wait! I will make sure your life is hell! When I secure my position as the hostess of the Miller family, I want to see what your attitude is then! I’ll crush you into the dirt, and you’ll never rise again!"
Outside the Miller family’s villa, Claire was escorted to the door by Alex’s men. The bodyguard in black opened the car door for her and said in a deep voice, "Madam, I’ll take you to the door. Please go in as soon as possible. Afterward, I’ll rush back to investigate the whereabouts of Mr. Miller’s uncle." The bodyguard in black did not return to the car but watched Claire warily, as if afraid she might try to escape.
Claire twitched her lips helplessly, nodded obediently, and said, "Okay, I’ll go back right now. Let Alex know he can rest assured."
With that, Claire turned and entered the house. It wasn’t until she walked into the bedroom and looked out the window that she saw the bodyguard in black get into the car and drive away. No sooner had he left than there was a knock on the bedroom door.
The old butler appeared, his face full of smiles as he greeted her kindly, "Madam, you’re finally home."
He smiled bitterly, adding, "I’ve been on tenterhooks since you left. The young master has been in a foul mood. If it weren’t for my age, I fear I’d be done for."
Claire’s heart sank. She had left so suddenly; Alex would likely hold the old butler accountable. Thinking of this, Claire looked at the old butler with a trace of apology and said, "Sorry, I’ll find an excuse next time."
The old butler waved his hands quickly and said with a wry smile, "No need, ma’am, don’t worry about it. No matter what the reason, the young master will be angry if you leave like that again. I know you’re concerned about the master, but you also know his temper. Once he’s set on something, nothing can change his mind."
Hearing these words, Claire sighed lightly, shook her head helplessly, and said, "Okay, I understand. I’ll be more careful next time and won’t run off again."
The old butler heaved a sigh of relief, nodded, and said, "Good, it’s getting late. Madam, please rest. Call me if you need anything; I’ll be right outside your door."
Claire looked at the old butler with her beautiful eyes in surprise, shook her head helplessly, and said, "You should rest too. I promise, I won’t leave again."
Despite her words, the old butler was unwilling to leave. In desperation, Claire allowed him to guard the door. After he finally left, she lay on the bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. All she could think about was the theft of the old man’s body. She was certain that if an autopsy were performed, the poison would be found in his system.
There were only two people who feared that discovery: Jack and Anna. But Anna had been abroad for years and had just returned; she likely didn’t know any big shots in City A. It seemed impossible for her to orchestrate the theft of a Miller family member’s body under Alex’s nose. Others might not know, but Claire did. Those black-clad bodyguards were all from the Military, and though she didn’t know the exact nature of Alex’s connections, she suspected they were powerful and well-trained!
Unless the perpetrator had nearly superhuman abilities or immense combat power, it would have been impossible to take the body from the hospital quietly. The person who did this was clearly prepared.
If so, wouldn’t Alex be in danger? Claire frowned, pondering. The whole situation felt off. A sense of unease grew within her, amplifying her worry for Alex. Was there someone else behind all this? A shadowy figure, perhaps, pulling the strings from the dark?
After wrestling with her thoughts, Claire couldn’t resist the urge to call Alex. She needed to hear his voice, to know that he was safe. Her fingers trembled as she dialed his number, anxiety gnawing at her insides. The phone rang once, twice, and then his voice came through, calm but with an edge that made her heart skip a beat.
"Claire? What’s wrong?"
