Chapter 181: Chapter 181: The Surprised Girl

.........

At the foot of the mountains, within the forest ruins.

Soon after Anvis and his companion ventured deep into the mountains, the tranquility of the forest was once again broken by a set of light footsteps.

With splendid pure golden hair and eyes as blue as the ocean, the figure of a Half-Elf girl arrived at the glade sprinkled with fine golden sunlight.

The girl was clothed in a tight-fitting leather traveler’s coat, with a sturdy fabric short cape draped over her slender shoulders, which had been enchanted for extra storage space, filled with various Alchemy Tools and exploring supplies.

Having ventured deep into the uninhabited wilderness and mountains of the island, Claire had dispensed with her rather cumbersome and uncomfortable disguise and reverted to her true appearance.

In the girl’s hand, she held a slightly delicate female’s One-Handed Sword.

The body of the sword was made of a dull silver-grey metal, invisible currents swirling around the thin blade, with tiny, mysterious Dark Gold Inscriptions etched upon the spine of the sword.

The vine-like hollowed-out hilt extended smoothly, protecting the girl’s pale and delicate hands.

More than a weapon of war, it resembled an exquisite and beautiful work of art.

Based on the aura of Strength emanating from the girl, her true Rank had remarkably reached the Peak of the Third Rank.

The Half-Elf girl was none other than Claire, following the description on the slate, she had set off from the beachside of Lavales, walked along the coastline towards the north of the island, until the middle of the island where the steep mountain cliffs met the primeval forest.

There, she changed direction, traversed the remaining primeval forest, and was finally about to reach the mountains.

The overall shape of the island’s mountain ranges resembled an ’E’ with its opening facing downward; both ends and the center were ancient mountain ranges, where the Curse Power was extremely strong.

But between the two gaps in the ’E’, there were forests and wilderness where the Curse Power was weaker.

Now, upon seeing the ancient Rock ruins by the little creek, Claire sat down on a clean boulder, and started a small campfire to prepare for her last rest before entering the ancient mountains.

The creek water was a rare source of fresh water, the result of thick snow from the peaks of the island’s mountains melting.

Even though the mountains were enveloped in a powerful Curse Field, the creek water itself did not contain any Curse Power.

In other words, Curse Power did not contaminate inanimate objects.

Skilfully chopping several appropriately-sized thick branches, Claire built a simple tripod-like structure around the campfire.

Then, from the nearby creek, she scooped up some crisp water, hung the water-filled black round stewing pot from the horizontal beam in the center of the structure, suspending it above the campfire.

As the island environment was not suitable for hunting, she placed some Magic Beast rabbit jerky she brought with her into the pot, along with a handful of aromatic dried mushrooms and various spices, to slowly stew.

After everything was prepared, the girl pierced some hard bread with two sharpened thin branches, stuck them in the ground beside the fire, using the heat from the flames to slowly soften them.

Soon, the rich aroma of stewed meat rose from the pot, mixed with the scent of spices and the unique fragrance of baked bread, enough to make one’s mouth water.

Casually stirring the campfire with her sword in hand, just as the girl was about to enjoy her belated lunch, an unexpected surprise abruptly interrupted everything.

Whoosh—

A faint White Light flashed through a set of leaning stone pillars at the side of the ruins.

Accompanied by a violent spatial fluctuation, two somewhat disheveled figures materialized out of nowhere, landing on the ground beside the ruins.

It was Anvis and Jom, who had previously gone to explore the caves.

The Transmission Array Plate, originally set up just to be cautious, unexpectedly came in handy.

Claire’s blue eyes reflected the two people who had suddenly appeared, just as the two who had just emerged were becoming aware of the girl’s presence, all three staring at each other.

"...Anvis?"

After a pause, Claire tentatively called out the boy’s name, her somewhat airy and gentle tone carrying a hint of confusion and surprise.

"Claire senior?"

Anvis’s voice was also laced with a touch of astonishment.

This wasn’t entirely an act; he had not expected to coincidentally encounter Claire camping here upon his arrival.

Fortunately, this wasn’t inside some dangerous ruins, so her aura should not be effective for the time being.

In reality, when Jom pierced the rock wall with his sword, there were no unusual changes to the cliff itself.

However, certain entities that were slumbering deep in the abyss were suddenly awakened by this sword strike.

They were obscure and distorted creatures hidden within the darkness.

At the same time, the space within the cave was suddenly sealed off by an alien power, interfering with the teleportation scroll, rendering it unusable.

The Challenge Level of 80+ was clearly related to these things.

Concerned about the possibility of more dangers emerging, Anvis made a quick decision and used a Transmission Beacon to escape in an instant.

.........

"...So, that’s how things went."

Listening to Anvis’s brief account of their experience in the cave, the girl’s eyes also showed deep astonishment.

Astonished by the terrifying and bewildering dangers described by Anvis.

As an explorer, her favorite stories were about mysterious and unpredictable events, especially those related to this island.

"But Anvis, why are you here?"

Sitting beside the campfire, Claire looked at Anvis with curiosity.

Finding this island was no easy task; she only learned of its existence by deciphering an ancient inscription tablet.

"My brother Evan has mysteriously disappeared, and after investigation, it seems to be related to the Secret Sect on this island."

Mentioning this, Anvis shook his head sorrowfully, his face expressing solemn righteousness.

"To save my elder brother, despite the immense dangers here, I still came to this island without hesitation."

"I see."

The girl nodded in understanding, looking at Anvis with a hint of admiration.

"You really have a great relationship with your brother. I’m sure he would be very touched by your actions."

"Then, Claire, what brings you here?"

After talking about his own purpose, Anvis turned the conversation towards the girl.

"Me?"

Upon hearing the question, Claire pondered for a moment.

"Actually, it’s like this."

"For some reason, people around me always encounter calamity due to various reasons."

"According to the description on an ancient stone tablet, there is something here that can help me eliminate this fate."

At this point, the golden-haired half-elf girl fell silent for a moment, bit her lower lip, and then spoke softly.

"So, Anvis, although I am grateful that you consider me a companion,

it would be better if you stay away from me until I find a way to remove the curse of calamity from myself.

Because getting too close could be very dangerous."
