Chapter 608: Chapter 606 Thank You for Your Trouble_1

After explaining the rules, the invigilator snapped his fingers, and immediately guards armed with weapons brought in boxes sealed with tape, distributing them to the competitors.

Each person in front of them received two boxes, one sealed box containing herbal medicine and the other an empty box.

The purpose of the empty box was to let each participant place the tested herbs back into it.

After all, among these were quite a few rare or highly valuable medicinal herbs.

Although the Ning Family was wealthy enough to rival a nation, they didn’t want to waste resources unnecessarily.

"The examination begins! Open the boxes!" the invigilator shouted, raising his voice.

Xia Ningxing, among the other candidates, immediately tore off the seals, examined the herbs inside the boxes, and then filled in their answer sheets.

To a layperson, the hundreds of different herbs inside the boxes would seem to contain no differences.

In fact, they were indeed very similar, deliberately arranged by the Ning Family with the aim of testing the contestants’ eyesight and their familiarity with the medicinal herbs.

Because they were so alike, many candidates were already sweating anxieties on their foreheads, some scratching their heads and faces, caught in a quandary.

Xia Ningxing, on the other hand, was calm and composed, picking up her pen and writing steadily, as if it was all very easy for her.

Outside the examination area, Lu Tingli was cradling Chuanchuan and, seeing Xia Ningxing’s effortlessly commanding performance, the corners of his thin lips lifted slightly, showing a curve indicating his happiness for her.

Chuanchuan was waving his little hands, cheering for his mother and emitting baby-like giggles.

After a while, as the sun grew harsher, Lu Tingli decided to take the little one back.

However, he encountered Mrs. Xia Ning on the way.

"Mother-in-law," Lu Tingli greeted her softly, seeing that there was no one around.

Chuanchuan also called out cheerfully, "Grandma! Grandma!"

"Grandma’s here! Good Baby, come to Grandma for a hug!" Mrs. Xia Ning, charmed by his sweet baby voice, nearly broke into a smile as bright as a flower.

After giving Lu Tingli a slight nod, she reached out, took Chuanchuan into her arms, and cradled him close.

"Mother-in-law, do you have any plans now, could you possibly take care of this little guy for a bit?" Lu Tingli asked immediately.

"Of course, I’m free, I’ve already finished all my tasks," Mrs. Xia Ning nodded subconsciously, then asked, "Do you have something to do?"

Lu Tingli explained, "Yes, I want to accompany Ningxing through her examination. It’s just that the sun is so harsh outside, I’m afraid this little fella won’t bear it well, and I’m uneasy about leaving him with anyone else."

Xia Ningxing was already a thorn in the side for many people, and there was no telling how many others were lurking in the shadows, waiting to sabotage her.

Therefore, he would not allow Chuanchuan to become a tool for others to threaten her with.

Mrs. Xia Ning noticed the tenderness in his eyes and at the corners of his brow as he spoke, clearly showing a deep love for Xia Ningxing.

There was no mother-in-law who wouldn’t be relieved to see her son-in-law deeply love her daughter, so she was decidedly comforted at the moment.

With a smile on her face, Mrs. Xia Ning promptly nodded and said, "Then you go. I’ll take care of Chuanchuan."

"I’m much obliged," Lu Tingli replied courteously.

"We’re family, no need for formalities," Mrs. Xia Ning chided him with a glance before leaving with Chuanchuan.

Once they had left, Lu Tingli returned to his previous spot.

Arriving back at his position, he stood with his long, narrow eyes intently watching the place where Xia Ningxing was situated.

He saw her still answering the questions with ease.

The sun outside is baking, and there are hardly any onlookers left, but he continues to stand still, like a statue, seemingly unfazed by the heat.

Xia Ningxing notices another gaze upon her and immediately stops writing, lifting her head to glance outside the window.

When she sees Lu Tingli standing outside alone, her heart instantly fills with sweetness and sighs.

What a silly man!

Does he really need to keep such a vigil over her?

The two of them look at each other, their eyes meeting for a moment before Lu Tingli smiles at her.

Then, he walks out of her sight to prevent her from getting distracted by him.

But Xia Ningxing, who knows his temperament all too well, is certain that he hasn’t left.

After shaking her head to herself, Xia Ningxing refocuses on her exam.

The test lasts for two hours, but Xia Ningxing needs only a little over one hour to finish the paper.

However, since the examination room doesn’t allow early submission, Xia Ningxing can only wait.

Outside, Lu Tingli is also waiting.

When the exam finally ends and the papers are collected, Xia Ningxing dashes out of the classroom and runs toward the man not far away.

"Lu, are you stupid or what, standing out here in this scorching heat!" Xia Ningxing can’t help but scold him.

Lu Tingli raises his hand to shield her from the sunlight, "I wanted to be with you!"

His long eyes lower, his expression serious, his tone sincere.

Xia Ningxing loses all temper at once, takes his large hand gently and says as they walk, "I know you want to be with me, but standing under the sun like this, I worry about you too, and that worry distracts me, doesn’t it?"

"So you’re not allowed to do this for the next exams," Xia Ningxing says, afraid that he might continue to wait outside her exams.

Lu Tingli frowns, "Can’t I find a shady place?"

"No... alright, alright, fine," Xia Ningxing knows his intentions and does not have the heart to refuse, so she nods and agrees.

"By the way, how did it go?" Knowing well that she did excellently, Lu Tingli can’t help but ask, eager to hear her say it herself.

"Don’t worry, Lu, I answered everything," Xia Ningxing says with a smile, then tiptoes to whisper in his ear, "The assessment was really too easy!"

"Others appear arrogant when they’re confident, but you, you’re adorable," Lu Tingli’s long eyes twinkle with mirth as he lightly grazes her high and delicate nose with his knuckles.

Xia Ningxing is sweetened by his flattery and covers her lips, giggling several times.

After her laughter, Xia Ningxing suddenly remembers something: "Where’s our son?"

"With Mrs. Ning," Lu Tingli answers.

"That’s good," Xia Ningxing finally feels relieved and lets out a breath.

She’s been worried that Lu Tingli would carelessly leave Chuanchuan with a servant. Given the complexities of the Ning Family and how she’s a thorn in many people’s sides, someone might threaten her using Chuanchuan.

But now that Chuanchuan is with Mrs. Xia Ning, Xia Ningxing feels reassured.

With Mrs. Xia Ning’s influence, snatching the child from her custody would be a pipe dream.

"Do I look like someone who’d carelessly entrust our child to someone else?" Lu Tingli, knowing what’s going on in her mind, knocks her lightly on the forehead, visibly annoyed.

If Mrs. Xia Ning had not been there, he would have personally taken care of Chuanchuan, and under no circumstances would he have left him to the care of servants or the like.
