Chapter 596: Chapter 594: Of course, I’m willing to acknowledge you_1

"Could you, perhaps, call me ’mom’?" Mrs. Xia Ning carefully asked, her eyes full of a greedy longing as she gazed at her.

Forgive her for she had missed her so desperately, dreaming for her to call her "mom".

"I..." Xia Ningxing hesitated before she said, "It’s possible, but the body I occupy now is someone else’s after all, and the parents and relatives of this body have been very kind to me, so I can only call you that when no one else is around."

She had, after all, taken over Mrs. Xia’s daughter’s body, and Mrs. Xia had raised her for so many years; she couldn’t simply cast her aside now that she had found her mother from another space-time.

Nor would she ever confront Mrs. Xia with the truth, for there is no pain greater in this world than a mother losing her child.

She would never let Mrs. Xia endure such pain.

She is Mrs. Xia’s daughter, her daughter for a lifetime!

Of course, she is Mrs. Xia Ning’s as well.

"No worries, no worries, as long as you’re willing to acknowledge me as your mom in your heart, that’s enough; Mom doesn’t mind the other stuff," Mrs. Xia Ning said, having researched Xia Ningxing’s background and naturally knew what she was considering.

"Of course, I’m willing to acknowledge you!" Xia Ningxing, who knew the truth, harbored no hate or resentment in her heart anymore.

Because she hadn’t done it on purpose.

She too was immersed in sadness and pain every day.

The pain she had suffered was no less than her own.

"Mom!"

Next, Xia Ningxing called out to her firmly, then wrapped her in an embrace with a smile on her face.

"Ah! My good girl!" Mrs. Xia Ning quickly responded, with tears once again rolling down her cheeks.

Xia Ningxing gently patted her back, comforting her, "Mom, you mustn’t cry anymore!"

"Alright, Mom won’t cry, Mom won’t cry," Mrs. Xia Ning hurriedly gathered her tears of joy.

"That’s more like it!" Xia Ningxing took a tissue and helped wipe away her tears before she asked, "Mom, may I see a picture of my dad?"

Xia Ningxing was quite curious about what her biological father looked like in the real world.

"Of course," Mrs. Xia Ning said affectionately as she stroked her hair, then got up and walked over to the dressing table, and took out a photo from its drawer.

"Why did you put away Dad’s photo?" Xia Ningxing couldn’t help asking.

It was only after the question that she realized, "You must be worried about being reminded of him, right?"

"Yes, I’m afraid if I see your dad’s photo, my sorrow would be uncontrollable," Mrs. Xia Ning said, her eyes welling up with quiet redness again.

"Even though Dad is gone now, but his daughter has returned, and she will be filial to you from now on!" Xia Ningxing said, patting her on the shoulder with a firm tone.

Even though they had never met before, perhaps because of their blood connection, there was not a hint of alienation between them but rather an affection that seemed as though they had never been apart or experienced so many trials.

"Alright!" Mrs. Xia Ning, filled with emotion, couldn’t help but kiss her on the forehead.

She then handed the photo to Xia Ningxing: "Have a look quickly, we still need to attend the medical conference later."

"Got it!" Xia Ningxing took it.

The man in the photo had the looks of a classically handsome man, with a high nose bridge and clear-cut features, brimming with a lively spirit, and a tall and stately figure, like a tall and sturdy tree.

He was dressed in a pristine white lab coat, sporting a pair of silver-framed glasses, his lips curved into a smile, gentle and refined.

It is often said that daughters tend to resemble their fathers more, and this was certainly true for Xia Ningxing.

Her features once bore a striking resemblance to her father, while her temperament mirrored that of Mrs. Xia Ning—elegant and dignified, the very image of a born heiress.

"Was Dad a doctor too?" Xia Ningxing mused as she looked at the white lab coat, touching her chin.

Generally speaking, only those in certain professions would wear a lab coat for a photograph.

That’s why Xia Ningxing made such a guess.

Mrs. Xia Ning shook her head, responding, "Not a doctor, your father was a distinguished chemist, once the dean of the national laboratory."

As she gazed at the man’s photo, she spoke tenderly and softly.

"I see," Xia Ningxing nodded in understanding. She then scrutinized her father’s photo again and couldn’t help frowning. "But why does my dad look so familiar? It’s as if I’ve seen him somewhere before. Mom, what’s his name?"

Xia Ningxing pressed on.

"Xia Aiguo!" Mrs. Xia Ning replied.

As these three words landed, Xia Ningxing’s eyes widened in realization of why he looked familiar.

Wasn’t this the man from her middle school textbooks!

He had conducted many studies... and was called the Father of Star Shine Chemistry!

"My dad is truly remarkable!" Xia Ningxing exclaimed with her tongue in cheek, completely astonished that her biological father was such a big shot, almost on par with the greats.

It was just a pity that over thirty years ago, he had tragically perished in a plane crash.

Xia Ningxing had seen his life story in books and could only sigh, but now, knowing that he was her father, it felt as though her heart was being pounded by a blunt instrument.

She bit her tongue, struggling to take a deep breath.

"He truly was amazing," Mrs. Xia Ning’s face revealed nostalgia and love. Then looking down at the man’s photo, she murmured to herself, "Aiguo, our daughter has finally come back. It’s just a pity that you never got to lay eyes on her..."

As she spoke, tears once again welled up in Mrs. Xia Ning’s eyes.

Fate was so unjust, having him pass away so young, without ever having seen his own flesh and blood.

The more Mrs. Xia Ning thought about it, the sadder she became, eventually covering her mouth to stifle her tears.

They say time heals all wounds, but nearly thirty years had passed, and she was still unable to move on from her pain.

Fortunately, her daughter had now returned, and the pain in her heart could finally be diminished, if only slightly.

Xia Ningxing, who was already distressed, now found herself unable to hold back her tears either.

"Child, don’t cry, please don’t cry. Your dad would certainly not want to see you crying or feeling sad for him," Mrs. Xia Ning, seeing Xia Ningxing crying too, became frantic, clumsily wiping away her tears and comforting her.

Xia Ningxing lifted her reddened eyes, "Then Mom shouldn’t cry either. I think Dad wouldn’t want to see you crying over him."

"Alright!" Mrs. Xia Ning agreed with a choke in her voice, embracing her, "We’ll both stop crying, to let your dad rest in peace."

"My girl, I heard you got married into the Lu Family, is your husband treating you well?" Mrs. Xia Ning began to chat to Xia Ningxing about family matters.

Though she usually kept up with the news and had glimpsed at the lovey-dovey reality show featuring Xia Ningxing and Lu Tingli, who knew if there was any pretense involved? So, she wanted to hear it straight from her daughter.
