Chapter 550: Chapter 548: Scheme within a Scheme 4_1
Xia Ningxing instinctively refused, "How can I leave first? I’m worried about Lu."
Mrs. Song grasped her hand and said again with earnest seriousness, "Xia, listen to me, you staying here will only become his burden. Come with me, I promise your family will be reunited!"
Struggle flashed in Xia Ningxing’s eyes as if pretending, then after a while, as if she had finally figured it out, she nodded:
"Alright then, Song, I’ll go with you."
By going with her, she could follow the trail to the base of her organization.
A strange gleam flitted across the depths of Xia Ningxing’s eyes.
But the light was too quick for anyone to catch.
Thus, Mrs. Song did not suspect a thing, "Hurry and pack your things; we’ll leave tonight."
As she spoke, Mrs. Song stroked her hair, looking at her with a gentle gaze as if she were her own younger sister.
But Xia Ningxing knew all too well what ruthless and malicious nature lay beneath that seemingly gentle facade, like a venomous snake lying in wait.
She lowered her eyes to hide the faint light within and obediently nodded, "Alright, Song, I’ll go pack right now."
Night fell quickly.
Mrs. Song climbed over the wall into Xia Ningxing’s courtyard without a sound.
Her movements were as light as feathers falling, clearly that of a trained martial artist.
Xia Ningxing’s once half-closed eyes now snapped open, revealing a chilling glint.
The fish had taken the bait!
When Mrs. Song arrived, Xia Ningxing’s eyes instantly became naive, filled with nervousness and unease. Her legs, which were sitting on the edge of the bed, bounced up as she looked anxiously at Mrs. Song, "Song, what do we do, I’m so scared, what if we’re discovered when we leave?"
"I’m terrified of being caught and then sent to jail."
As she spoke, Xia Ningxing’s voice already carried the cry of fear.
She seemed like nothing more than a useless vase.
"It’s fine, it’s fine," Mrs. Song seemed to have anticipated such a reaction and hurriedly went over to comfort her, "I’ve taken care of everything, it’s absolutely foolproof. Now, stop talking and hurry up and follow me."
As she spoke, Mrs. Song was already eager, her eyes flashing with an abnormal excitement, pulling her hand and walking outside.
Mrs. Song had been lurking in the institute for many years and was thoroughly familiar with the terrain and guards, so she had come up with a perfect escape route in advance.
Hence, even as the two of them left the institute, the guards didn’t notice a thing.
Xia Ningxing’s eyes flickered as she had already memorized the institute’s weak spots in her mind, determining to make the head of the institute tighten security there later.
Then Xia Ningxing’s eyes lit up with excitement, and she looked up at her with admiration, "Song, you are so amazing, you actually managed to lead me out of the heavily guarded institute."
Mrs. Song tilted her chin up and smiled, a clear sense of pride on her face, but she quickly covered it up and whispered to her, "Shh, keep it down, we just need to get through the Mist Forest up ahead and we’ll be out of here."
"We must move quickly." Saying this, Mrs. Song already pulled her towards entering the Mist Forest.
The reason it was called Mist Forest was because of the year-round thick fog that covered the complex terrain inside, and it was said that once someone entered, they never came out again.
So over time, it had become a forbidden area.
Now, seeing them about to enter this forbidden area, Xia Ningxing’s eyes widened with panic, and she instinctively grabbed her, "No, Song, we can’t get out of the Mist Forest, it’s forbidden ground, there are monsters inside!"
Inside the institute, the adults, afraid the children would run off to the forbidden area, concocted this lie.
Mrs. Song’s face stiffened, obviously at a loss for words, she sighed helplessly and said to her, "There are no such things as monsters, it’s just a lie told to scare children."
"But even if there are no monsters, such heavy fog, we’ll get lost if we walk in!" Xia Ningxing bit her lip, with an expression that pleaded for another route to take.
Mrs. Song’s patience was almost worn thin, she frowned and said, "You won’t get lost if you follow me. Come on, we need to hurry. Don’t you want to see your sweetheart?"
"How could I not want to!" Xia Ningxing retorted subconsciously.
"Then cut the nonsense and follow me!" Mrs. Song’s tone was clearly colder, and she gripped Xia’s hand with more force, decisively leading her into the fog.
Xia Ningxing, looking pitiful, meekly didn’t dare to speak.
Once inside the Mist Forest, Xia Ningxing saw Mrs. Song walking with ease, as if she was in her own backyard.
It was obvious that Mrs. Song was very familiar with this place.
The reason ordinary people would get lost here was not only because the fog was too thick but also because there was an ancient array inside.
Anyone unfamiliar with the array would keep circling in the same spot once they walked in.
Until they were exhausted to death or starved to death!
So, that was the real reason why people who entered could not find their way out!
Xia Ningxing couldn’t help but clench her fingers tightly.
If you looked closely, you’d notice Xia Ningxing sprinkling something on the ground, leaving a trail.
About half an hour later, Mrs. Song led Xia Ningxing out of the Mist Forest.
Before exiting the Mist Forest, Xia Ningxing had wondered what lay outside the woods. She hadn’t expected that there would be a continuous range of mountains.
Under the gloomy night light, the mountains stretched endlessly, pitch-black with trees casting menacing shadows like terrifying beasts.
Soon after, Xia Ningxing heard Mrs. Song mimic the call of the cuckoo bird twice.
Shortly after her calls, two shadowy figures leapt out quickly from behind nearby rocks.
The night was dark, so Xia Ningxing could only see two blurry shadows, which, judging by their size and build, she guessed were two men.
Xia Ningxing instinctively tightened her grip on Mrs. Song’s hand and hid behind her, her voice timid, "Sister-in-law, Sister-in-law..."
"Don’t be afraid, they are our people. There are many traps in the mountains, and we need them to lead us up," Mrs. Song comforted her with a pat on the shoulder.
Xia Ningxing finally breathed a sigh of relief, let down her guard, and carefully proceeded with them.
Along the way, they encountered at least a dozen traps.
Then they entered another Mist Forest, and when they emerged, they finally reached the location of the organization represented by Mrs. Song.
Who would have thought that the Dark Organization, which the institute had been unable to find, was right behind that Mist Forest?
It was a classic case of not seeing what’s right under your nose!
One must admit the mastermind behind the organization was quite astute!
After all, who would suspect that the enemy was right beneath their own eyes!
Xia Ningxing mentally remarked, then lifted her gaze, quietly observing her surroundings.
The guard here was strict, with many heavy weapons, no less formidable than the defenses of a formal research facility.
