Chapter 546: Chapter 544 Accident 1_1
The warm spring season brought tiny buds on flowers, grass, and trees; plane trees adorned both sides of the road, occasionally letting a leaf flutter down.
Lu Tingli was holding Xia Ningxing’s hand as they moved forward together.
Seeing the couple’s intimacy, someone couldn’t help but ask, "Mr. Lu, where are you taking your wife?"
"Prenatal checkup," Lu Tingli replied tersely, yet anyone could see the joy on his handsome face, and his brisk pace as he walked.
"Congratulations, congratulations!" the person said with a laugh.
A few minutes later, Xia Ningxing and Lu Tingli arrived at the hospital.
Checking the baby’s gender was simple, just a quick ultrasound scan.
In this era, non-medical fetal gender determination wasn’t prohibited yet, making it easy to find out the gender. Of course, this also led to a high abortion rate and a serious gender imbalance.
During the examination, Lu Tingli’s heart nearly leaped to his throat, much like a child anxiously waiting to see if they’ve won a big prize.
"Doctor, is it a boy or a girl?" he asked, holding his breath and staring intently at the ultrasound monitor, wishing he had studied medicine so that he could discern the gender at a glance.
"Let me see," the doctor said while adjusting his glasses, "No, I can’t see clearly."
Lu Tingli pleaded, "Please take another close look."
After a while, the doctor still shook his head, "No, I still can’t see; it’s all blocked. If you really want to know the child’s gender, then how about this—go have a blood test."
"Forget it," Lu Tingli immediately refused without a second thought.
Each prenatal checkup, Xia Ningxing had to be subjected to blood draws, not just a little but several vials each time. He felt so uncomfortable just watching that the idea of having her blood taken again just to check the baby’s gender was out of the question.
"Don’t refuse, Lu, I can handle it," Xia Ningxing said as she rose from the ultrasound bed and assured him.
Having her blood taken had almost become routine for Xia Ningxing.
"No, we’re not checking. Either gender is fine," Lu Tingli said firmly, shaking his head while wiping the gel off her abdomen after the ultrasound, adding,
"As long as it’s a child you give birth to." He didn’t forget to add that bit at the end.
Xia Ningxing’s smile broadened, and she felt as sweet as if she had just swallowed a whole jar of honey.
"Then we’ll see if we can find out the gender at the next prenatal checkup," she suggested.
"Leave it to fate," Lu Tingli replied, gently tweaking her nose and lifting her off the examination bed, no longer insistent on knowing the gender of their child.
Strangely, for several subsequent prenatal checkups, it remained difficult to determine the baby’s gender.
But that was a story for another time.
After this prenatal checkup, Nanny Wu finally returned.
She came back that afternoon, carrying bags and bags of stuff.
Seeing this, Xia Ningxing immediately put down the book in her hand and went to greet her, "Nanny Wu, why have you brought so much stuff with you?"
As she spoke, she reached out to help lighten her load.
"No, no, no, Xingxing, you go back and sit down. You’re pregnant; you shouldn’t be doing heavy work. I can manage these things," Nanny Wu insisted, refusing to let her touch anything.
Xia Ningxing felt resigned, "Nanny Wu, I’ll be okay, really. It won’t harm me."
Everyone was treating her as if she were completely incapacitated.
"Still not allowed!" Nanny Wu insisted and then hurried off as if scared that Xia Ningxing would come over and insist on helping.
Xia Ningxing could only laugh and shake her head at the situation.
After entering the house, Nanny Wu set down her things and said with a smile, "Xingxing, all these snacks are from the old master, they’re your favorites."
"Grandpa is really too good to me." Xia Ningxing looked at the array of goodies and couldn’t help but feel her eyes moisten.
"No tears, no tears. The old master brought you these things to make you happy, not to make you cry." Nanny Wu quickly took her hand and patted it comfortingly, then her gaze fell on her belly and she said with a smile, "How have you been these days?"
"I’m very well, Nanny Wu, don’t worry about me," Xia Ningxing replied, drying the moisture at the corners of her eyes.
"That’s good to hear." Nanny Wu’s eyes reflected her relief and comfort.
Heaven knows how much she’d been missing her and the child in her belly over these days.
"But Xingxing, why do I feel like the chickens in the coop don’t quite look like ours?" Nanny Wu mentioned this with some confusion.
Could it be that she had seen wrong?
"They’re indeed not ours..." Xia Ningxing laughed and recounted what had happened earlier to her.
After listening, Nanny Wu rolled her eyes repeatedly, "What kind of people are there in this world! So odd! Just too odd!"
While speaking, she deliberately raised her voice.
Next door, Mrs. Jiang obviously understood that Nanny Wu was mocking her, and she felt both embarrassed and annoyed.
Enough was enough!
She was already unfortunate enough, did they really need to kick her while she was down?
"Auntie Wu, you’re back!" Mrs. Song, perhaps hearing the commotion, came in with a delighted smile.
Nanny Wu had always had a good impression of this gentle woman and greeted her with a smile as well, "Yes, I’m back. Want some snacks?"
"Oh no, I couldn’t possibly," Mrs. Song hastily declined, her face turning red.
"You’re the only genuine one around. If it were some people, they’d probably have snatched them all and eaten them up by now!" Nanny Wu began to indirectly scold again.
Hmph!
How dare they bully her girl while she was away?
She wouldn’t let them get away with it!
Mrs. Jiang was about to explode with anger, stomping her feet and covering her ears as she went inside.
After hearing the sound of the door closing, Nanny Wu immediately curled her lips into a victorious smile.
Xia Ningxing couldn’t help but cover her lips and laugh, feeling both touched and warmed.
Mrs. Song and Nanny Wu got along exceptionally well, both of them loved chatting about household matters. Xia Ningxing, finding it uninteresting, went straight into the inner room to rest.
What Xia Ningxing didn’t see was that Mrs. Song kept her eyes on her until she was completely out of sight.
But that odd expression vanished in a flash, and soon Mrs. Song was chatting warmly with Nanny Wu again, although they both lowered their voices as if afraid of being overheard by Xia Ningxing.
Lately, Xia Ningxing hadn’t been vomiting much but was very sleepy, needing to sleep at least fifteen hours a day, and she wasn’t very spirited, seeming as if the child in her belly was draining her energy.
So, a lot of things happened right under her eyelids without her noticing.
When it was almost four months, Xia Ningxing distinctly felt a chilly and stern atmosphere shrouding the research institute. Standing by the window, she saw a group of people in prosecutor uniforms conducting house-to-house searches.
Xia Ningxing frowned and stepped out of the house, asking Nanny Wu, who was busy in the kitchen, "Nanny Wu, what’s going on?"
Nanny Wu shook her head, "It’s nothing, Xingxing, don’t trouble yourself with those matters. Come, drink the chicken soup I’ve just finished boiling for you."
As she spoke, her gaze darted away, clearly not wanting to tell her and cause her worry.
