Chapter 544: Chapter 542 Thieves Shout to Catch a Thief_1
The director said, "Xia, don’t take offense with Mrs. Jiang. It’s better not to hurt yourself over it."
"Hmm, thank you for your concern, Director," Xia Ningxing nodded.
Mrs. Jiang had already received the punishment she deserved and had apologized. Even if it wasn’t sincere, it didn’t matter.
As long as she didn’t provoke her in the future, Ningxing wouldn’t do anything to her.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Jiang, having lost face, was sneakily trying to take the chicken away with her.
"Hold on," someone couldn’t help but call out to her, "You can leave, but why take the chicken with you?"
"This is my chicken. Why can’t I take it?" Mrs. Jiang didn’t expect to be caught and glared at the person.
That person laughed in frustration and pointed at her, "The chicken indeed belongs to your family. But since you shamelessly switched it with Xia’s and then, due to personal reasons, caused Xia’s chicken to die, this chicken naturally belongs to Xia now, as compensation."
"I’ve already apologized, and the director punished me. Why should I still compensate!" Mrs. Jiang said indignantly.
In her heart, she felt she had already paid a heavy price, sufficient to make up for her past deeds.
"Mrs. Jiang, how thick is your face!" The director, who was speaking to Xia Ningxing, overheard this and couldn’t help but step out to scold her again, "I punished you earlier because you stole someone’s chicken and then tried to turn the situation around. Now that you’ve caused the death of their chicken, why should you not compensate!"
"I..." Mrs. Jiang’s face was extremely flustered. She knew she was in the wrong but couldn’t accept it.
But there was nothing she could do about feeling indignant now, Mrs. Jiang had no choice but to leave the chicken behind and leave dejectedly.
As soon as she left, everyone couldn’t help but start gossiping—
"Mrs. Jiang’s skin is really too thick!"
"Isn’t that right! Not only did she swap the chickens, but after killing one, she turned around and accused the other, and then she actually wanted to take the chicken away!"
"Such an incredible person!"
"Really an ungrateful woman!" The director was speechless.
Xia Ningxing couldn’t help but curl her lips. Mrs. Jiang’s skin was indeed thick!
Then, the director added, "Comrade Xia, take good care of yourself during pregnancy. If anything happens in the future, come directly to me. I’ll support and stand up for you!"
His words were meant for Xia Ningxing but also for everyone present.
Clearly, the director intended to protect Xia Ningxing. If anyone crossed her, it would be the same as crossing him.
"Thank you, Director," said Xia Ningxing, grateful but neither servile nor overbearing.
The director laughed heartily, "No need for thanks."
The women around couldn’t help but cast envious glances at Xia Ningxing. Having married a good man was an advantage; even the director himself ensured her protection.
After everyone dispersed, Mrs. Song came out, looking at Xia Ningxing with relief, "I knew it, Xia. You were framed. How could a girl like you do such a thing? Now the truth is finally out!" She seemed to breathe a sigh of relief as she spoke.
"Hmm," Xia Ningxing responded, then headed toward the house.
"Let me help you, Xia," Mrs. Song moved to assist her, but Xia Ningxing quickened her pace to avoid her hand.
"No need."
After saying that, Xia Ningxing went straight into the house.
Mrs. Song noticed her evasive action and the smile on her gentle face faded slightly. However, she quickly returned to normal, as if she hadn’t noticed her distance, and continued to follow with enthusiasm.
"Xia, when will Mrs. Wu be back?" she asked casually.
"Soon," Xia Ningxing replied perfunctorily.
But Mrs. Song, as if she hadn’t noticed the perfunctory response, continued, "It’s good she’ll be back soon. Otherwise, it’s quite worrying to have a pregnant woman like you alone at home."
"It’s fine," Xia Ningxing continued perfunctorily and then issued a dismissal, "Mrs. Song, I’m a bit tired and will go to sleep. I won’t keep you any longer."
Mrs. Song couldn’t miss the hint in her words, and she knew that sometimes being too close was not a good thing, so she promptly got up, "It’s nothing, it’s nothing. I have some other things to take care of, you get some rest; I’ll be going now."
After she finished speaking, Xia Ningxing saw her leave.
After she left, Xia Ningxing went to lie on the bed.
Although she wanted to get rid of Mrs. Song, she couldn’t deny she was indeed a bit tired.
She slept until nightfall.
It wasn’t until someone came into the room that Xia Ningxing suddenly opened her eyes.
"It’s me."
Noticing the movement from the bed, Lu Tingli immediately spoke up to inform her.
"Oh, it’s Lu," Xia Ningxing said, letting out a sigh of relief. She turned on the bedside lamp beside her, then looked up at the man and then out the window.
"It’s already dark, what time is it? I haven’t even started cooking!"
As she spoke, Xia Ningxing was about to get out of bed to cook.
"What are you cooking for? Didn’t we agree that I cook every evening and then you go to the cafeteria for lunch?" Lu Tingli stopped her from moving and tucked her back into the covers, "Be good, go back to sleep. I’ll cook."
"Don’t move, understand?"
Lu Tingli narrowed his eyes and spoke again.
"I got it, I got it," Xia Ningxing said, unable to help but laugh as she watched his retreating figure.
Childish!
And telling her not to move!
What, am I a wooden figurine?
It’s just pregnancy, what harm could cooking do? Look how nervous he is.
Despite her complaints, her heart was ultimately sweet as honey.
Which wife wouldn’t want to be taken care of attentively during pregnancy!
Listening to the noises coming from the kitchen, the sweetness in Xia Ningxing’s heart grew even richer.
The reason why she didn’t go to the cafeteria in the morning and evening was that Lu Tingli wanted to personally make some nutritious pregnant-woman meals. After all, the cafeteria just offered mass-cooked food that filled the stomach with hardly any nutritional value.
Soon, Lu Tingli had made several dishes that were both colorful and rich in nutrients.
During the meal, noises of quarreling came from next door.
The gist of it was that Mrs. Jiang’s husband was furiously cursing Mrs. Song for switching their chickens, causing him to have his wages docked, and it seemed he even hit Mrs. Jiang. Mrs. Jiang, a formidable woman, immediately fought back.
The noise kept getting louder.
But that wasn’t the most important part.
The crucial issue was that several households’ chickens had caught a plague, and these were the families that Mrs. Jiang had previously inspected, so everyone suspected she hadn’t cleaned herself properly, had carried the virus, and infected their chickens, and thus they were all confronting the Jiang family.
"Mrs. Jiang, our chickens have the plague; you must give us an explanation!"
"That’s right! We need an explanation!"
"It’s bad enough that you accuse others of theft, but to have our chickens killed as well, that’s too much!"
"Compensation!"
Everyone was shouting indignantly.
Now, Mrs. Jiang – who had been tussling with her husband – was at a loss.
