Chapter 540: Chapter 538 How Did Your Hand Get Broken_1

Mrs. Jiang was unclear as to why the chickens were laying so many eggs, but Xia Ningxing knew exactly why.

It was certainly because of her special physique.

When Lu Tingli returned, he saw his little wife continuously sneering, her gaze vaguely fixed on the Jiang’s yard next door.

"What’s wrong?" Lu Tingli couldn’t help but ask.

Instead of answering, Xia Ningxing said, "Look at the chicken coop and tell me if you notice any changes."

Lu Tingli narrowed his eyes and glanced over at the chicken cage in the yard.

He hadn’t noticed before, but upon looking, Lu Tingli felt something was definitely amiss.

After pondering for a moment, he said with certainty, "These two hens have been switched."

"Exactly!" Xia Ningxing’s cheeks puffed up.

She wasn’t angry that someone had switched her hens, she was angry about Mrs. Jiang’s actions.

"Was it Mrs. Jiang’s doing?" Lu Tingli followed up with another question.

It wasn’t hard to guess from her reaction.

"Yes, it was her!" Xia Ningxing bit down hard on her rice.

"I’ll go talk to her husband about this matter right now," said Lu Tingli as he picked up his coat to leave.

How dare they switch the chickens his wife was raising! Their audacity was too much!

"Lu, hold off on going for now," Xia Ningxing pulled him back, shaking her head at him with a hint of cunning in her eyes, "Mrs. Jiang switched my chickens because she thinks that the chickens in our home lay a lot of eggs. Let her see whether those chickens can lay as many eggs in her yard!"

By that time, she would just sit and wait for Mrs. Jiang to not only fail at her switch but to lose even more.

Lu Tingli understood his girl’s meaning and nodded, "I’ll listen to you and not confront them for now."

Although he didn’t confront Mrs. Jiang immediately, Mr. Song, her husband, definitely felt that Lu Tingli was being harsher on him at work. Any slip-up and he would get a tongue-lashing so severe it left him utterly dejected.

In contrast, Mrs. Jiang was extremely happy.

She had let the chickens out of the cage early in the morning and extravagantly scattered some leftover food that hadn’t gone sour on the ground.

Normally, she would never have dreamt of feeding fresh leftovers to animals, but the thought of the two hens laying eight eggs for her every day made the expense seem negligible.

"Cluck, cluck, eat up, you must lay lots of eggs for me, otherwise how could you live up to the precious food I’m giving you?"

Mrs. Jiang mumbled to herself as she scattered the leftover food on the ground.

After tossing the leftovers, Mrs. Jiang went to the side to wash clothes.

Because she was washing so intently, she didn’t notice that while she was occupied, the two hens had jumped into her vegetable garden and were pecking away at her young bok choy with their sharp beaks.

In no time at all, what had been a perfectly fine vegetable garden was utterly ruined by the two hens.

"Ah!" When Mrs. Jiang turned her head to pour out the washing water, she saw the wrecked garden.

She immediately let out a scream like a pig being slaughtered, grabbed a stick and chased after the chickens, "You little beasts, my vegetable garden! Disaster!"

Even though she was chasing the chickens with a stick, she didn’t dare really hit them.

Nonsense, if her egg-laying gets messed up, who will provide her with eight eggs every day!

And they are double-yolked ones at that!

Mrs. Jiang, exhausted from chasing the chickens out of the vegetable garden, gasped for breath.

She just couldn’t understand why, when Nanny Wu released the chickens from their coop every morning to feed them, they never once pecked the vegetable garden. Why did it happen to her?

Still, Mrs. Jiang didn’t give it much thought. To prevent the chickens from destroying her vegetables again, she simply caught them and locked them back in the coop.

But the hens, having just tasted freedom, were unwilling to be caged again. They struggled fiercely and pecked Mrs. Jiang twice in the process.

"Hiss!" The beak was as sharp as a knife; Mrs. Jiang had skin torn off and blood oozed out, the pain searing like fire.

"Damn little beast!"

Mrs. Jiang, seething with anger, quickly grabbed some dry straw to cover the wound and stop the bleeding, glaring at the hens with eyes that spouted fire, wishing she could tear them to shreds.

However, thinking of the eight eggs she got daily, Mrs. Jiang had to force herself to swallow her rage.

Next door, Xia Ningxing was eating sour plum, all the while hearing everything Mrs. Jiang was up to.

Even without having seen it with her own eyes, Xia Ningxing could easily picture the scene that had just unfolded.

Serves her right!

Xia Ningxing muttered inwardly as she pinched another sour plum and popped it into her mouth.

Back to Mrs. Jiang, who thought some dry straw would be enough to stop the bleeding. But, to her surprise, not only did the bleeding stop, her wound started oozing pus and was both painful and itchy; her whole hand swelled up enormously.

Mrs. Jiang, needing her hand for household chores, hurried off to the medical team in a panic.

It just so happened that Xia Ningxing was at the medical team for another prenatal checkup. Seeing Mrs. Jiang, Xia Ningxing barely concealed a smile and feigned ignorance as she asked, "Jiang, what happened to your hand?"

"I..." Seeing Xia Ningxing, Mrs. Jiang immediately felt guilty, especially after just swapping her chickens the day before. How could she not feel guilty in front of the rightful owner?

Fearing she’d give herself away, Mrs. Jiang answered irritably without thinking, "I hurt it by accident."

"Oh, is that so?" Xia Ningxing nodded, her expression a mix of amusement and disbelief, then she added, "Looking at your wound, it’s clearly infected. You must get an IV, or you might be at risk of amputation."

Upon hearing this, Mrs. Jiang exploded, feeling that Xia Ningxing was cursing her: "You know nothing about medicine, stop spreading frightening nonsense!"

"How could Xia not know about medicine? I’ll have you know, Xia is a highly skilled traditional Chinese medicine practitioner. If it weren’t for her pregnancy, we were actually planning to invite her to be our resident doctor!" said a doctor in a white coat, who had just walked in to stand up for Xia Ningxing. He then glanced at Mrs. Jiang’s wound, which was continuously oozing pus, "And Xia is right. You must get an IV for that wound, or there’s a ninety percent chance you’ll need an amputation!"

"This, this serious?" When a proper doctor said so, Mrs. Jiang was so frightened she almost wet herself.

She had been merely pecked by a little beast, and now they were talking about amputation?

As the doctor examined her wound, he asked, "Did you rub something like twigs or ash on it?"

"Yes, some dry straw. I thought it would help stop the bleeding," Mrs. Jiang replied truthfully.

"Foolish!" the doctor frowned severely. "Do you have any idea how many bacteria are on dry straw? It’s no wonder it got infected!"

"But don’t many people use these traditional remedies to treat wounds?" Mrs. Jiang replied sheepishly, but unable to contain her defensiveness, she couldn’t resist the urge to argue.

The doctor scoffed. "That’s because they’re either lucky or their wounds are minor!"
