Chapter 172: Chapter 172: I Will Remember to Come Back Later

The guest had no choice but to give up, snorted coldly, and left, deciding to never patronize her business again.

In the face of such incidents, Xia Jiaojiao showed a numb expression, void of any emotion.

Because such things had happened not once or twice before. At the beginning, she was terrified, fearing she would end up just like her mother, but after numerous occurrences, it seemed to matter less and less.

"Jiaojiao, don’t be afraid, didn’t I tell you to come home later after school? Why did you come back so early?" Fang Yuemei turned around, looking at her awkwardly.

As she approached, Xia Jiaojiao suddenly smelled a mix of male and female scents.

She frowned, holding back nausea, "I’ll remember to come back later next time."

As she spoke, she prepared to return to her room.

"What are you running off for, girl?" Fang Yuemei had more to ask her, and quickly grabbed the strap of her backpack, pulling her back. "Jiaojiao, didn’t you go to the art festival today? How did it go, my good daughter? Which place did you get?"

She looked at her with anticipation.

"I..." Xia Jiaojiao bit her lip, stammering for a long time without managing to utter a complete sentence.

"Well? Go on, tell me!" Fang Yuemei grew impatient, quickly pressing her: "Quick, tell mom, did you get first place?"

"No," Xia Jiaojiao blurted out in resignation.

Fang Yuemei’s eyes dimmed noticeably. How could her excellent daughter not have won first place?

But then she thought, "Did you get second place, then?"

Second place was also good!

"Not second place either," came another denial.

"Oh, I know, you definitely got third place, right?" Fang Yuemei’s brow furrowed, but the next second, she started rationalizing, beaming: "No matter, third place is fine too. What about the prize money? Didn’t you always want a cotton-linen dress? Give the prize money to mom, and I’ll go to the department store tomorrow and buy it for you."

"I don’t have any prize money..." Xia Jiaojiao’s lips were nearly bleeding; she hung her head low to the dust.

Fang Yuemei couldn’t believe it. "Weren’t there prizes for the top three? How could you not have any?"

"Why are you so annoying? I didn’t get third place, so where would any prize money come from?" Seeing her mother continuously sprinkle salt and chili pepper on her wounds, Xia Jiaojiao finally couldn’t stand it anymore, flinging her backpack at her mother in frustration.

"What do you mean?" Fang Yuemei got startled, her mind still a mess.

Xia Jiaojiao, her face twisted with humiliation and her eyes bloodshot, yelled at her, "It means your daughter didn’t place at all in the art festival, do you understand now!"

After shouting, she crouched down on the ground, hugging her knees, and began to sob and wail in despair.

Enough!

Really, enough!

She was already embarrassed enough; why did her mother insist on interrogating her incessantly!

Why can’t this person just die!

"You didn’t win any place? How is that possible!" Fang Yuemei stepped back a few steps in disbelief, staring at her in shock: "Jiaojiao, you’ve been studying zither since you were five years old; even your teacher said you’re very talented. In this small n-tier city, how could anyone surpass your Zither Skills?"

Xia Jiaojiao said nothing, continuing to cry on the ground, her voice nearly hoarse.

"Alright, alright, my dear daughter, stop crying now." Although Fang Yuemei was regretful and angry that she hadn’t won a prize, she still felt sorry for her. She quickly helped her up and wiped away her tears, then asked out of curiosity, "So, who made it to the top three this time?"
