Chapter 108: Chapter 108 What is this_1
"What is this?" Mrs. Cheng couldn’t help but be startled, subconsciously opening the box in her hands. The moment she saw the thick and hefty gold chain inside, she was taken aback, inhaling sharply before snapping the box shut and pushing it back to Xia Ningxing, "Bao’er, how can you give such a valuable thing to Grandma? Take it back quickly."
Xia Ningxing affectionately wrapped her arms around Mrs. Cheng’s arm, her overly pretty face tilted slightly upward as she pouted and reminded, "Grandma, have you forgotten? You once sold your gold chain to pay for my pneumonia treatment. There’s a saying that what is borrowed must be returned; this is me returning it to you."
Originally, during the New Year’s celebrations, Xia Ningxing had intended to buy a gold chain to repay the elderly lady, but unexpectedly, the distressing matter concerning Xia Jianren occurred.
Afterward, with the house construction, it was postponed, leading to the present delay.
Mrs. Cheng certainly remembered this event, but this gold chain was nearly as heavy as her three put together.
Furthermore, she had never thought of asking them to repay her; now, with tears of emotion gathering in the corners of her eyes, she choked up as she pushed the chain back into her hands, "Bao’er, let’s not mention those long-past trivial matters. Keep the chain for yourself; you can use it as your dowry in the future."
Actually, all she wanted was for her granddaughter to remember her; the rest was not important.
"Yes, Bao’er, keep it for yourself. Uncle will buy one for Grandma once he starts earning money," Uncle Lin said as he patted her little head.
Aunt Lin also chimed in, "Bao’er, be good and keep it for yourself."
Both of them were upright people; even though they were well aware that their sister’s family was not just well-off but rather wealthy, they didn’t want to take advantage of it.
"No way!" Xia Ningxing was very determined, taking out the gold chain, intent on putting it on Mrs. Cheng, "Grandma, you mustn’t refuse, or Bao’er will be very sad. Without your generous help back then, there wouldn’t be a healthy Bao’er today."
"Back then, Bao’er’s family was poor and couldn’t afford to return the chain to you, Grandma. But now that our family has money, we must return it no matter what."
"But this chain is so much thicker than the one Grandma had," Mrs. Cheng looked at her with reddened eyes.
This little girl knew all too well how to touch people’s hearts; no wonder her own daughter doted on her so much—if it were given to her, she would pamper her just the same!
Xia Ningxing spoke in a childish tone, "Think of it as interest accrued over the years!"
Mrs. Cheng felt helpless, "But..."
Where on earth does interest grow like this?
Before she could finish speaking, her hands were grasped by Mrs. Xia,
"Mother, please accept it. It’s my fault for not being able to return the gold chain all these years. I’ve been fretting about it every day. Now that my life is comfortable, please accept it and ease your daughter’s mind," Mrs. Xia pleaded, her eyes brimming with tears of guilt and pain as she buried her head in her mother’s arms, trembling as she cried.
"My child! Why has your life been so hard!" Mrs. Cheng thought of all the hardships her daughter had been through over the years, and especially the recent divorce and kidnapping of the child by his biological father, her heart ached as if it were being cut, and with tears, she hugged her, gently patting her back, finally agreeing, "Mother will keep it, Mother will keep it."
There’s a saying that mother and daughter have connected hearts; Mrs. Xia could certainly feel Mrs. Cheng’s heartache. She lifted her head, looking at her through teary eyes,
"Mother, don’t worry about me. Even though I have lost my husband, I still have a thoughtful and well-behaved daughter and five sons, and I can run my own business. I’ll live well, much better than when I had a man. Please don’t be concerned about me and take good care of yourself."
