Rebirth: He Decides to Lie Flat -
Chapter 497 - 497 492 Furious
Chapter 497: Chapter 492: Furious Chapter 497: Chapter 492: Furious “Where else could it be,” Yang Yan said irritably, “your sister-in-law ‘borrowed’ it. Dad has tried several times to ask for it back, but either she says, ‘Oh, I just cleaned the car and was about to pick up your grandson from school,’ or ‘I’m not done using it yet, are you in a hurry?’ In short, it’s always some excuse, and she just doesn’t want to give it back. She even took the keys. What’s Dad supposed to do? Break into their place looking for them?”
At this moment, Yang’s father came out of the kitchen supporting Yang’s mother and said to Yang Yan, “Your sister just got home, why talk about this now? I’ll go and ask for it again tomorrow.”
Yang Dan had come back planning to go to town to buy some things, and it was indeed inconvenient without an electric bike at home.
Yang’s father was also extremely dissatisfied with his eldest son and his wife. No matter his own limitations, he had done everything he was supposed to do for their wedding, and sometimes when they couldn’t handle the work in the fields, he and his wife would help them out. As an old farmer, he had truly done his best. What more did they want?
He was suffering from osteophyte growth in his legs, which sometimes caused such piercing pain that he couldn’t sleep all night. His wife had asked their second son to bring back a box of plasters from the Chinese medicine shop in the county town several times, but to this day, he had not brought any back.
It was their youngest daughter who had earned some money from her own work over the past two years; starting from last year, she had been bringing home plasters bit by bit, and last time she came home, she bought an electric tricycle.
He really liked that tricycle. Going to the fields or to town to shop, it saved him a lot more effort than before. But who would have thought that after less than two months, his eldest daughter-in-law took the opportunity to ‘borrow’ it.
With borrowing but never returning, she still hadn’t given it back to this day.
Hearing this, Yang Dan felt the anger rise in her chest, and she pointed at the main room and the kitchen asking her sister, “And the light bulb? That’s not even worth much, did they take that too?”
Is this the son they raised? He’s more like a bandit!
Unable to hold back, she burst out with a curse, and the volume of her voice suddenly rose several notches.
Yang’s father, mother, and Yang Yan were all startled, especially Yang’s mother, who was tender-hearted. In her whole life, she had never fought with outsiders, let alone her own daughter-in-law. Now seeing her daughter so angry, she quickly tried to calm her down, “Dan Dan, we’re all family, why must you…”
“Dad, who took down the light bulb?”
Yang Yan also looked toward Yang’s father. She had asked before, but the couple kept tight-lipped and simply wouldn’t say.
“Does Yang Gangqiang still have any shame? Doesn’t he know his own parents have failing vision and can’t see clearly at night?”
Yang’s mother hurriedly said, “It wasn’t your older brother who took it down, it was, it was Xiaobo…”
Yang Dan’s anger was ready to shoot through the top of her head as she retorted fiercely, “What’s the difference whether his son took it down or he did? To be able to do such a thing, are they even human? You still dote on him like the apple of your eye, this is the grandchild you’ve spoiled!”
Reminded of something, she turned and strode into the kitchen. After sweeping her gaze around the room, she noticed the brand new rice cooker she had bought had been replaced with an old one, and the soymilk maker she brought from Beijing was nowhere to be seen. She opened the cupboard and checked, but it wasn’t there either.
She then ran to the main room to look, and it wasn’t there either.
Fine, just fine, perfectly fine!
Fuming, Yang Dan’s chest heaved, and her eyes reddened with anger.
She marched out forcefully, moving so fast she didn’t give her parents time to react.
Seeing the direction she was heading, Yang’s father and mother knew she was going to her older brother’s house. They hastily urged Yang Yan, “Quick, follow her. Your sister-in-law is fierce, don’t let her hit Dan Dan again.”
“Oh, okay.”
Yang Yan snapped to attention and quickly abandoned the suitcase in her hands to chase after him.
Yang Dan’s elder brother’s house was not far from their parents’ home, just a couple of households down to the south, a plot of land exchanged many years ago with their uncle’s family because it was conveniently located on a main road, ideal for daily travel and for laying out beans or corn to dry.
In order to swap for this homestead, her father had given their uncle’s family the best and closest plot of land he had, as well as an additional three hundred yuan.
The courtyard was spacious and squarish, and the four rooms made of green brick and tile roof looked somewhat old now, but they were pretty decent in the village a decade or more ago. At least, her sister-in-law’s family had been quite satisfied when they came to see it.
So her honest and unambitious father, though not possessed of great skills, made up for it with his hard work and thriftiness. He really did his best when both of his sons got married, not letting either of them down.
He did not let you down, but now that he’s old, not only do you let him down, but you’re also cruel to him!
Yang Dan, fuming with anger, walked hurriedly to her elder brother’s house and kicked the big iron gate open with a loud clang.
As she entered her elder brother’s courtyard, she casually picked up a shovel that was leaning against the wall just inside the gate.
The shovel was a type of long-handled farming tool, with a very long handle made of round wood and a large, thick, rectangular steel blade at the front that was quite sharp. It wasn’t just for fighting; simply holding it was enough to intimidate and instill fear in others.
At that moment, her elder brother’s family of four was sitting in the kitchen eating dinner. The kitchen door was closed because it was cold outside, but they could still hear the noise from the gate.
Yang Gangqiang, Yang Dan’s elder brother, was just about to get up and see who it was when the wooden kitchen door was also kicked open with a loud bang.
All four of them were stunned for a moment, only to see Yang Dan come in with an angry face and a shovel in her hand.
Yang Yan’s sister-in-law, upon seeing that the door kicker was her own sister-in-law, instantly became furious. She slammed her chopsticks onto the table and said sarcastically, “Well, well, look who’s acting all high and mighty after becoming a university student. Getting all arrogant, are we? Coming to her elder brother’s house to show off as soon as she returns home. What, we owe you something?”
The familiar long tube light hung in the center of the kitchen, with the bright incandescent light making it as clear as day, so much so that the grains of rice in their sweet potato soup were visibly clear.
Yang Dan ignored her sister-in-law, instead narrowing her eyes to look up at the tube light before turning to ask Yang Bo, who was sitting on a small stool looking dazedly at her, “Did you take this tube light from your grandmother’s house?”
As she asked this, she noticed from the corner of her eye that Yang Gangqiang, who was standing to one side, seemed taken aback, clearly unaware of the situation.
Should she be happy about that?
Happy my ass!
How long had it been since he last visited their parents? He was so out of touch that he didn’t even realize when they installed the tube light and then suddenly switched back to dim, low-wattage lightbulbs.
Yang Bo, fifteen this year and in his second year of junior high, was a hefty teenager who could eat a lot and had grown tall. But height was of no use at a time like this. Confronted by his little aunt and the shovel in her hand, he stuttered and sold out his mother, “It, it, it was my mom who told me to take it…”
Yang Dan turned to look at her sister-in-law, who, though feeling guilty, still tried to bluff her way through in self-righteous indignation, “I did it for their own good, the light was too bright, it could hurt the eyes.”
Hurt the eyes?
Yang Dan was infuriated and amused by this woman. She raised the shovel toward her, “You really have some nerve, saying the light’s too bright and hurts the eyes. So, did you take away the rice cooker because it’s too new and doesn’t cook rice properly? Did you take the soy milk maker because it makes the soy milk too hot and might burn? Did you snatch the electric scooter fearing that my dad might not ride it safely and fall off?”
