Chapter 491 - 491 486 Looking for Trouble
Chapter 491: Chapter 486: Looking for Trouble Chapter 491: Chapter 486: Looking for Trouble Xie Jingying’s funeral, Mu Jiawen didn’t attend.
As time passed, she no longer hated her that much, but she could never forgive her.
To treat her as a stranger from now on and have nothing to do with her, was already the biggest gesture of forgiveness she could muster, out of consideration for her uncle and grandma.
After Xie Jingying’s funeral, Xie Lin couldn’t help but call Jiang Yan, telling him that Song Xiwen hadn’t returned, and that Old Song had phoned to yell at her fiercely, but what was the use?
You can’t scold someone into waking up.
Then, Xie Lin told Jiang Yan that, when he went to Jianglin Village to attend his aunt’s funeral, he heard that Jiang Yan’s grandfather had suddenly collapsed while working in the field, and by the time he was taken to the hospital, his mouth was twisted and he was paralyzed on one side of his body.
In the Jiang Family, the old man was practically invisible, unnoticeable unless one paid special attention.
Jiang Yan would have forgotten he even had a grandfather if Xie Lin hadn’t mentioned it.
He was such an inconspicuous presence in the Jiang Family. The only memory Jiang Yan had was of him getting up early every day to sweep the yard, then lighting the fire to cook. He could work, but was silent and not given to talking.
Jiang Yan’s last recollection of him was when old lady Jiang pinched his living expenses, and he stuttered to Jiang Yan, “Your, your grandma is doing this for your good, to prevent you from squandering money. If you save, twenty yuan a month is enough. Back in the day, our whole family lived on just five yuan a month.”
Damn reminiscing about the old days!
And five yuan a month…
Jiang Yan really had no fondness for his grandfather, so after listening, he simply forgot about it. He was in his senior year now, and would graduate in half a year.
Jiajia was already guaranteed a place for her postgraduate studies, but he didn’t plan to apply for grad school. He wondered whether he should just get married after graduating.
He had always gotten along well with his mother-in-law and had told her that when they got married, she would live with them.
Chen Yan was quite pleased with this, as this was exactly her plan.
Of course, because of the gallery, she would go out for one or two months each year to gain inspiration and paint, which also offered the young couple a bit of private space for themselves.
As winter break approached, Yang Dan called Mu Jiawen, “The holidays are coming, and there’s a big sale on fruits and vegetables here. If you’re too busy to come over, I’ll buy them and bring them to you.”
Mu Jiawen had been looking after Xiaohei a bit too meticulously. The vegetables in winter weren’t fresh, and Xiaohei wouldn’t eat what was bought from the market, so Mu Jiawen had to visit the Agricultural University every now and then to get it some fresh, unconventional food.
She had planned to go there again before the holidays, but got so caught up with lab work in the last couple of days that she forgot.
Reminded by Yang Dan, she quickly replied, “I’m free this afternoon, I’ll come over right after lunch.”
“Don’t have lunch, come over and I’ll bake you a pizza.”
With Jiang Yan at the factory, Mu Jiawen had no choice but to find her older brother, and drive his car over.
By the time she arrived at the pizza place at the entrance of the Agricultural University, Yang Dan had already baked the pizza, and even fried her a steak that was tender and smooth, very delicious.
“Is it just you? Where’s the boss?”
This foreign-educated gentleman truly lived at ease; his shop had been lukewarm in business for four or five years, but he acted as if he thoroughly enjoyed it and never seemed to be in a hurry. With only Yang Dan as a part-time employee, he didn’t hold promotions or sales; everything was clearly priced, and the cost was what it was.
It was as if he opened the shop just to pass the time, not to make money.
So, long ago, Mu Jiawen had concluded that this man was not short on money.
By that time, it was past the lunch hour, and the store was almost empty. Yang Dan sat opposite Mu Jiawen, sipping coffee and smilingly said, “He went to get some wine from a friend, some sort of red wine that’s really good. He said once he’s back, he’ll open a bottle for me to taste.”
Her voice was filled with an undeniable joy and happiness.
Mu Jiawen’s hand, holding a fork, paused. She was usually not sensitive to matters of the heart, but now she could tell there was something off in Yang Dan’s words.
Am I overthinking it?
Mu Jiawen knew that Boss Men was not single. When he returned from abroad five years ago, it was said that his wife did not come back with him. So now… had they divorced?
She glanced at Yang Dan without showing any reaction and said, “If that wine is really good, tell Boss Men for me, ask if he can sell me a few bottles. My mom likes to drink.”
“Sure, he was planning to stock some in the shop anyway.”
“By the way, Yang Dan, did Boss Men’s wife ever come back from abroad?”
Yang Dan’s expression faltered slightly, her smile clearly waned, and she said, “They’ve already divorced.”
Mu Jiawen looked up, “Divorced? When did that happen?”
“It’s been a year already. You didn’t ask before, and I didn’t think to tell you. One of them didn’t want to come back from abroad, and the other absolutely refused to go abroad again. In this situation, there was no other choice but to divorce.”
Mu Jiawen agreed, “That’s true indeed.”
She let out a slight sigh of relief.
She quickly finished the steak in front of her and then began eating the pizza.
Yang Dan watched her with envy, “Do you know? Your metabolism, how you don’t gain weight no matter what you eat, is really envy-inducing.”
“You’re envious? Envy won’t help.”
“You little brat…”
As the two were joking and playing around, the door of the pizza shop was pushed open, and a woman dressed in a brown coat with wavy long hair stepped inside.
Yang Dan quickly got up and went behind the cash register, politely asking, “Hello, what would you like to eat?”
“Are you Yang Dan?”
It was a simple question, but Yang Dan and Mu Jiawen both sensed an undercurrent of hostility.
Yang Dan’s smile faded a bit, but she nodded and said, “Yes, I’m Yang Dan.”
She didn’t ask who the other party was, because in her plain social circle, as plain as water, it was impossible to mingle with a woman of such dress and demeanor, unless… she guessed a certain possibility.
Sure enough, after sizing her up, the other party scoffed, “What’s this, has Memberland gone blind? To actually fancy someone of your looks!”
Yang Dan’s face changed dramatically, but she was never one to argue with others, especially when infuriated to the extreme, she would be completely bewildered, unable to retort.
At that moment, they suddenly heard a “snap” sound, and both Yang Dan and the curly-haired woman turned to look.
Mu Jiawen slammed her fork down on the table and stared at the woman, saying coldly, “An aging vixen, who gave you the courage to mock Yang Dan? Your face? Then you should go home and take a good look at yourself, count how many wrinkles you have, and see if they are so numerous that even makeup can’t cover them.”
Now it was the woman’s turn to be thrown off balance, raising her hand angrily at Mu Jiawen, “Who are you calling an aging vixen?”
“Who do you think I’m calling? Don’t you know what you look like? Since you’re already divorced, who Memberland dates is none of your business. Or is it that after the divorce you found out you’re not that marketable anymore and want to get back together with him, but unfortunately, Memberland already has a girlfriend and won’t take you back, so you came here to cause trouble for Yang Dan?”
