Chapter 480 - 480 475 Quite the Eater

Chapter 480: Chapter 475: Quite the Eater Chapter 480: Chapter 475: Quite the Eater “Hmm, the recovery is going well; he can be discharged tomorrow.”

After the routine morning check-up, Yu Feng calmly said to Aunt Liu, “After being discharged and returning home, you should continue to recover slowly and avoid overexerting yourself. If there are any problems in the meantime, you can call me directly.”

“Thank you, Dr. Yu.”

Hearing she could be discharged, Aunt Liu was very happy. Her vision had also mostly recovered, and the feeling of regaining sight was something that those who had never been blind could hardly truly understand.

Yi Hailan and Aunt Liu’s son, Jin Youping, were also quite happy.

Before, when Yi Hailan brought her mother to Beijing for treatment, he had been somewhat unhappy—not because he didn’t want to treat his mother’s eyes but because he felt that there was no hope of regaining sight once someone was blind. Wasn’t that just pointless trouble?

But Jin Youping didn’t dare to stop her; Yi Hailan was his sister’s comrade-in-arms, and her gaze was as intimidating as his sister’s.

Fortunately, the doctor they found was very reliable. The surgery was successful, and in just a few days, his mother could vaguely see some light. Now, half a month had passed. Although things weren’t crystal clear, she could make out shapes pretty accurately.

Such an outcome was beyond anything Jin Youping had dared to hope for. He had thought his mother would remain blind forever, which had caused his wife to argue with him twice over it.

Yi Hailan followed Yu Feng out of the ward, expressing her gratitude with sincerity and intensity once again.

Yu Feng smiled and suddenly said, “How about this? You treat me to a meal so that we don’t have to keep saying ‘thank you’ every time we meet. After eating together, we can drop that word.”

“Ah?” Yi Hailan was taken aback for a moment before she caught on, “It’s only right to treat Dr. Yu to a meal, but thanks are still due.”

After saying this, she asked, “When do you have time?”

“I’m off-duty tonight, and I can after I get off work this afternoon. What about you?”

“I’ve taken the next couple of days off to see Aunt Liu off, so I’m free today and tomorrow. So… what do you like to eat, or should you pick the restaurant?”

“You pick. I’m fine with anything.”

After Yu Feng left, Yi Hailan stood at the door of the hospital room, reviewing the restaurants she knew in her mind. Most of them didn’t quite satisfy her until the image of an elderly figure flashed through her mind. She hesitated for a few seconds but ultimately decided to take Yu Feng there to eat.

At 5:30 p.m., Yu Feng left the hospital, just as Yi Hailan was parking her car at the main entrance.

Yu Feng got into the passenger seat, buckling up while asking, “Where to?”

Yi Hailan eased the car into traffic while hesitantly replying, “It’s a very small restaurant with a humble environment… Will you mind?”

Yu Feng glanced at her, instantly understanding what she meant, “Does it serve really tasty food?”

“Yes, particularly delicious.”

“Then that’s all that matters. I don’t have many demands for restaurants: cleanliness and good food. If it meets those two criteria, it’s fine by me.”

Yi Hailan smiled. She hadn’t misjudged him. Although Yu Feng was well-known, he wasn’t extravagant, and he had a good personality and was easy to get along with.

As it was exactly rush hour, Yi Hailan took a detour around the congested city center, which added half an hour to their trip to their destination.

Parking expertly in a familiar spot, Yi Hailan led Yu Feng down a somewhat secluded and narrow street.

After walking for about ten minutes, Yi Hailan pointed to a small restaurant with a sign that read “Old Qin’s Homestyle Cooking” and said, “This place.”

The two of them pushed the door open and entered to find that, in stark contrast to the quiet street outside, all four tables inside were fully occupied.

Yu Feng looked around the room. Although the furnishings were simple and rustic, everything was neatly organized to the point of near obsession. Yet, undeniably, as a restaurant, it felt unbelievably clean.

Just then, a middle-aged man limped out of the kitchen carrying a dish. He was surprised to see Yi Hailan, but then smiled and said, “Little Hailan is here. Go to the backyard.”

After he finished speaking, he also glanced at Yu Feng, a hint of surprise flashing in his eyes.

The two went into the backyard, where Yi Hailan invited Yu Feng to sit down at a table in a room. She then quickly went out and brought back two plates of cold dishes, beef in brine and a vegetable dish that Yu Feng couldn’t name.

Soon, the middle-aged man they had seen earlier brought in a plate of plump, steaming buns. “Freshly steamed mutton buns, give them a try.”

Yi Hailan introduced Yu Feng to the man, “Uncle Qin, this is Doctor Yu. He performed Aunt Liu’s surgery. He’s very skilled—Aunt Liu can even see now.”

The man, known as Uncle Qin, immediately brightened up, his face full of gratitude as he said, “Thank you so much. I thought my sister-in-law would be blind for the rest of her life, but I never expected that she’d see the light of day again. Doctor Yu, I won’t say too much in the way of thanks. If you enjoy the food at my place, feel free to come by anytime. Whatever you want to eat, I’ll make it for you.”

Yu Feng politely demurred before eventually accepting the offer, it was clear that Uncle Qin was sincere and not just being polite.

After Uncle Qin left, Yu Feng picked up a bun and took a bite, then asked vaguely, “Is Uncle Qin a former soldier?”

Despite his limp, the man didn’t appear sluggish in his movements. Rolled-up sleeves revealed arm muscles with smooth, defined lines—not something one typically gets from just doing manual labor.

“You noticed?” Yi Hailan wasn’t surprised. She peeled garlic as she spoke, her head bowed, “Uncle Qin used to be a soldier under my father. He injured his leg on a mission. He could have chosen to change professions, but instead, he chose to leave the military to help with the small restaurant here, for Grandpa Qin. Do you eat garlic?”

Actually, she was peeling the garlic for herself. Mutton buns with garlic are a perfect match, though the taste is a bit strong, and she wasn’t sure if Yu Feng would like it.

However, Yu Feng reached out and took some. He hadn’t used to eat garlic, but ever since Jiang Yan came to his home, they never ran out of it. Whether it be stir-fried or stewed dishes, it had become one of the indispensable seasonings.

Yi Hailan was surprised to see him take a bite without hesitation and then she laughed, “I didn’t expect Doctor Yu, with your ethereal looks, to be so down-to-earth.”

“What’s that supposed to mean, those with ethereal looks don’t eat grains?” Yu Feng retorted.

“Fair point,” Yi Hailan conceded.

The two chatted comfortably, the conversation flowing without the need to carefully choose topics—casual and natural.

Then Yi Hailan noticed something—Yu Feng had quite an appetite!

The plate Uncle Qin had used for the buns was large, and the buns themselves were sizable; six to a plate was not a small serving. But while she had only eaten one, Yu Feng had already polished off three.

She couldn’t help but hold back his chopsticks as he reached for the fourth bun, “We haven’t even gotten to the main dishes yet. Don’t fill up on buns. If you like them, I’ll pack a bag for you to take when you leave.”

Just then, Uncle Qin came in with another dish, “Eel with braised pork, my old man’s specialty. Try this, Doctor Yu.”

Yi Hailan really was worrying too much. Following the eel with braised pork, Uncle Qin brought out old tofu, spicy shrimp pot, spicy chicken… Though these were all simple home-cooked dishes, the flavors were exceptional, and Yu Feng managed to finish almost all of them by the end.

He could eat even more than she could!
