Rebirth: He Decides to Lie Flat
Chapter 438 - 438 433 Fountain Square

Chapter 438: Chapter 433: Fountain Square Chapter 438: Chapter 433: Fountain Square Actually, Dai Lei wanted to tell Gao Jie that she was not without fault either. If she wanted to give him a love letter, why not give it to him personally?

How could she ensure it would reach him if it passed through someone else’s hands?

But when the waiter interrupted, the emotion of the moment was scattered, and he couldn’t bring himself to say those words anymore.

However, the words he had managed to say earlier were obviously very effective. Following that, Gao Jie’s attitude towards him had visibly softened. When she spoke to him, her voice was gentle and soft, no longer the awkward, turned-away muttering she had done before.

She was speaking to him, but it was more like she was speaking to the air.

Since it was still early after dinner, even though Dai Lei had no experience in dating girls, he knew that this was not the time to go their separate ways and head home to their mothers.

So, what should they do?

After thinking it over, he asked Gao Jie, who had been looking straight ahead but pointedly avoiding his gaze, “I heard that the fountain here is beautiful at night, how about, you take me to see it?”

But upon hearing this, Gao Jie’s face suspiciously flushed red.

Dai Lei, puzzled, asked hesitantly, “What’s wrong? Is it not a good place to go to?”

“It’s not that, we can go there.” Gao Jie immediately shook her head and pointed ahead, “Just around the corner and we’ll be there.”

The two walked along the curb, with dusk having just settled in not long ago. Street lamps lit up one after another, the colorful lights from the shopping mall behind them were dazzling, and the bustling shops and restaurants around them hummed with noise. Groups of boys and girls, off from school, passed by them, chatting energetically and laughing joyfully, and both of them lapsed into a bit of silence.

They were likely high school students. Recalling their own high school days, it seemed they had never wandered around outside at this time. It was either practice tests or memorizing English, every day filled with an endless pile of exams and homework… Was it dull?

Looking back now, it seemed slightly dull, but at the time, they didn’t think so and never pondered too much about it.

“To be honest, during high school, English was actually the subject I hated the most. But when I thought about how you could be first in it, I felt somewhat begrudging and would force myself to read, memorize, and recite, all just to surpass you,” Gao Jie broke the silence first, laughing as she recalled those times. At that tender age of budding emotions, she always thought about catching his attention in the way he liked.

However, it also turned out to be a blessing in disguise because otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to maintain first place in the liberal arts classes.

“If you said you were first in math and science, I would believe it, but since when did I ever outperform you in English? Haven’t I always been behind you?”

He didn’t particularly like English either; it was his weakest subject among all. Of course, when he said weakest, it was only in comparison to his near-perfect scores in math and science.

“In the first term of our freshman year, you led in every subject except for Chinese. I knew I could never beat you in math and science, so I worked hard to improve my English, to surpass you. That’s why in the second term, I was ahead of you in both English and Chinese,” Gao Jie explained in detail, specifying the time, but Dai Lei really couldn’t remember any of it. After all, for a top student like him, he no longer paid attention to rankings, focusing more on the difficulty of the papers and the total scores.

But even a bookworm knew that this wasn’t something to state so bluntly, so he pretended to ponder for a moment, just about to gloss over the topic, when suddenly he felt a pain in his neck. His hand shot up reflexively, and he slapped his right neck.

Gao Jie was startled by his action and quickly turned to ask, “What happened?”

“Seems like I was bitten by a mosquito.”

After he finished speaking and lowered his right hand, indeed, there was a patch of blood in his palm and a dead little bug, but it seemed not to be a mosquito—it was a small black insect.

Upon seeing this, Gao Jie hurriedly took out a tissue from her little backpack, first handing him one to wipe his hand, then took another to help him clean his neck.

The two stood face to face, with Dai Lei wiping his hands and tilting his head to reveal the bitten spot. Because of her nearsightedness and the lighting, Gao Jie tiptoed closer to his neck, carefully wiping away the residual bloodstains.

The two were very close, close enough to feel each other’s breath. However, neither of them was focused on this. One looked at the insect in his palm with confusion, “This isn’t a mosquito. What kind of bug is it? Is it poisonous?”

The other leaned in to look at the bite, assuring, “It’s not poisonous, it’s similar to a mosquito bite, just a small red spot. Does it itch?”

“Not really, it’s not very itchy.”

“Then it should be fine, but you never know. We’ll take another look later tonight to see if it swells.”

Then they separated and continued on towards the fountain square as if nothing had happened.

Neither of them noticed several people standing not far behind them at the entrance of a restaurant, including Ren Li and Du Fei, while the others discussed incredulously on the side—

“Damn, was that Dai Lei and Gao Jie just now?”

“Yes, it was definitely them.”

“They… how come they’re together?”

From their position and distance, it looked as if Dai Lei and Gao Jie were kissing, so without a doubt, they were dating.

A flash of jealousy swept through Du Fei’s eyes. She hadn’t expected Ji Bin’s words to be true—that Dai Lei and Gao Jie were actually out on a date tonight!

After the tutoring session that morning, Ji Bin ran into a former classmate on the bus. Knowing she was close to Du Fei, he “casually” mentioned Dai Lei’s plans for the evening. Initially, the classmate didn’t believe him because she had heard from Du Fei that Dai Lei was pursuing her.

Even though Du Fei eventually chose Ren Li, even so, moving on to someone else couldn’t be that quick, could it?

So after parting ways with Ji Bin, she immediately told Du Fei.

Coincidentally, Ren Li had invited them to dinner and karaoke that night, and Du Fei changed the location to near the fountain square. Unexpectedly, it turned out to be such a coincidence, as they saw them just after finishing dinner.

The girl standing beside Du Fei looked with complex eyes at the retreating figures of Dai Lei and Gao Jie, then glanced at her friend beside her, unsure whether her previous words were true.

Because the two of them had progressed to the stage of “kissing,” it was clear they had been together for more than a day or two. Dai Lei didn’t seem like the type to be fickle, so… never mind, why meddle in other’s affairs? Besides, Du Fei didn’t choose him, so if he had been with Gao Jie for a while, it wouldn’t count as a betrayal, right?

The girl shook her head, deciding not to think any further.

Turning around to ask Du Fei where they were going to karaoke, she was surprised to hear her suggest they first go to the fountain square and sing later.

Ren Li didn’t speak, but he nodded in agreement.

A group of them walked forward bustlingly.

Meanwhile, Dai Lei and Gao Jie had already arrived at the fountain square.

It was there that Dai Lei finally understood why Gao Jie blushed when he first suggested coming here.

Surrounding the circular fountain were couples, some embracing each other, some holding hands, and some like them who were just standing side by side, not too close but still within the ambiguous territory…
