Rebirth: He Decides to Lie Flat
Chapter 264 - 264 261 Reunion (Part 2)

Chapter 264: Chapter 261 Reunion (Part 2) Chapter 264: Chapter 261 Reunion (Part 2) On the sixteenth day of the first lunar month, Liang Yujun and her two friends didn’t arrive at the school until twelve noon.

The weather was good today, and Mu Jiawen had come over at eight o’clock in the morning to open the windows for ventilation, clean up, and air the bedding. Of course, it wasn’t just her bedding that was aired out, but also those of her three roommates, including the army green mats that Liang Yujun’s father had given them before.

So by the time the three of them reached the dormitory, room 303 was bright and clean, with not a speck of dust on anyone’s desk, and the mats and quilts were basking in the warm sunlight on the balcony outside, looking soft and comfortable. It even seemed to wash away all the tiredness of their journey.

“I love Jiajia to death, where is she? Call her and ask her to come over.”

After a winter break, Ding Yuanyuan’s face and figure had filled out a bit more, leading to the direct consequence that her waist was gone, and she had to buy new pants.

Liang Yujun pulled out her phone to call Mu Jiawen, while Sha Yali poked Ding Yuanyuan’s chubby cheek with a finger, “Although it’s hard to resist the delicious food during the New Year, you should have some idea of your weight, right? Can’t you control your eating?”

Ding Yuanyuan shook her head, “You don’t understand, there’s a kind of hunger, where your grandparents think you haven’t eaten enough. They hadn’t seen me for half a year and wanted to make me five meals a day. Even so, my grandma still thought I was eating too little.”

Sha Yali heard this and became envious, “That’s nice, unlike my grandparents, who are the typical type that favor boys over girls. Ever since I was little, whether they bought anything or not, there was only my male cousin’s share, never mine. They only give him New Year’s money, not me, and they did it right in front of our whole family.”

Ding Yuanyuan opened her mouth wide in shock, “I’ve never heard you talk about this before. Didn’t your grandparents change their attitude towards you after you got into Beijing University? Did they give you any money?”

Sha Yali curled her lip, “Don’t even mention it. When I got into Beijing University, they were still sighing and lamenting, saying how good it would have been if my cousin had been the one to attend this school. What’s the use of a girl going there? They almost enraged my parents to death. Initially, they didn’t think about giving me any money, but perhaps someone talked to them about it, they called us to come back for a meal, and then after much fuss, they dug out five hundred yuan. I didn’t take it. The pocket money they give their grandson in a single instance is more than that amount, and for his birthday, even more. I got into the best university in the country, and they gave me five hundred? Does our family lack this five hundred yuan?”

Liang Yujun hung up the phone, and upon hearing Sha Yali’s words, she too was surprised; they had all met her parents, especially her mother, who was cheerful and generous, very likable.

But they hadn’t imagined her grandparents would be such eccentrics.

“Let me tell you something else; I didn’t originally have the surname Sha, but Zhang, after my father. Because my grandparents were so blatantly biased and heartless, my father, in a fit of anger, changed my surname to follow my mother’s, which is Sha. My maternal grandfather was the happiest when I changed my surname, since my grandmother only had my mother due to poor health. Unfortunately, my grandmother is no longer here, but if she were, she would probably be even happier.”

Ding Yuanyuan asked curiously, “So what was your grandparents’ reaction when they found out you changed your surname? Were they angry?”

Talking about this made Sha Yali feel they were beyond reason, “More than angry, they were furious. My grandmother even went to my father’s place of work to scold him, saying he wasn’t becoming a live-in son-in-law, so why should he change my surname? They acted as if they cared so much about me, their granddaughter, but it was really about not being able to save face and fearing what others would say. When I was young, my father would tolerate it, but as I grew up, he wouldn’t stand for it anymore, afraid of breaking my heart.”

“Good for your dad!”

After the praise, Liang Yujun urged the other two, “Put your things down and let’s go, we will sort out the clothes when we come back. Jiajia is waiting for us at the restaurant at the entrance.”

Actually, they didn’t have much to pack up, they just needed to put the clothes they brought into the wardrobe, and place the suitcase underneath, and that was it.

After all, Mu Jiawen had cleaned the dormitory thoroughly, even airing out each person’s wardrobe.

The whole dormitory was both clean and refreshing.

The four met at the ‘Jinkuaizi’ near the entrance, where Mu Jiawen had already ordered the dishes, and no sooner had the other three sat down than the food began to be served.

Just like Sha Yali, upon seeing Ding Yuanyuan, Mu Jiawen couldn’t help but poke her cheek with a finger, “You’re really something, just a month apart, and you’re nearly a ball.”

“It’s not that exaggerated; you guys are too much,” protested Ding Yuanyuan.

Liang Yujun curiously asked, “I see your mother is quite attentive to body management, she’s so slim. Your grandmother feeds you like this, doesn’t she try to stop her?”

Hearing this, Ding Yuanyuan laughed, “You don’t know, this is what my mom calls shooting herself in the foot. When I was little, my grandmother used to fatten me up, and my mom would go around praising how diligent she was, how delicious her cooking was, how good she was with kids. She praised my grandma till she was over the moon, and even now she still raises me according to the standards of my childhood. Now she can’t laugh anymore though, because she never expected me to keep being plump up till now, hahaha…”

Mu Jiawen and the others looked at her with speechless faces. Where’s the humor in that?

Sha Yali, whose focus wasn’t on the plumpness, asked, “Are your mom and grandma on good terms?”

Ding Yuanyuan answered nonchalantly, “It’s okay, I guess. I don’t think it’s anything special, just a normal mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship. But my mom knows how to talk. Since my grandparents raised me, through elementary, middle, and high school, whenever I came first in tests or won competitions, my mom attributed the credit to my grandparents, saying my granddad could tutor, teaching me really good study habits. Even when I got into Beijing University, she told people it was because of how well the two old folks raised me, that it had nothing to do with her. It got to the point where the elders in our area would approach my grandparents for child-rearing advice. My grandma would proudly tell people that kids need to eat meat, and if a one-year-old couldn’t handle it, you’d to grind it into mince, beef mince at that — and never be stingy, because you can’t snag a wolf without sacrificing something… that’s her exact phrase, but I don’t remember if I ever ate meat at one.”

The three listened in awe, finally understanding where Ding Yuanyuan’s carefree and optimistic character came from.

Liang Yujun exclaimed, “Your aunt doesn’t just know how to talk, her emotional intelligence is simply too high.”

Little did she know, Ding Yuanyuan retorted with a pout, “What are you talking about, she’s just lazy and doesn’t want to look after kids. When I was just born and hadn’t reached a month old, my maternal grandmother took care of her during the postpartum period, when she told my grandmother that my poop made her want to throw up, and she couldn’t sleep with me around. My grandmother had to cook for her during the day, and if she had to look after me at night, she definitely wouldn’t be able to rest well. After discussing it, they decided to let my dad take over. So during my mom’s postpartum period, I slept with my dad at night. Later, once I turned a month old and my grandmother went home, my grandma came over to care for me. She secretly told me that when I was just two months old, my mom started applying nail polish, being all vain. My grandma saw that and didn’t dare let her breastfeed me anymore; I was switched to formula right away.”

Well then…

It’s true, every family has its own fascinating story.
