Rebirth: He Decides to Lie Flat -
Chapter 258 - 258 255 Unrepentant
Chapter 258: Chapter 255 Unrepentant Chapter 258: Chapter 255 Unrepentant The DNA test results between Xu Qian and Lin Jian’an came out the next day, and as expected, the parent-child relationship was confirmed.
On the third day, the DNA test results between Xu Qian and Maomao came out; the two were confirmed to be biologically related, meaning it was basically certain that the two were biological sisters.
Finding her sister, Xu Qian breathed a sigh of relief, but also felt a pang of sadness. Unlike her, her sister hadn’t been as lucky to encounter a decent family, a pair of adoptive parents who treated her as their own.
Yet at only sixteen, she had to wake up early to sell vegetables in the bitter winter to sustain herself and her grandmother.
Xu Qian went to see Maomao, and after getting the consent of her adoptive parents and brother, she wanted to take her back to her own home.
But Maomao was reluctant, partly because she was worried about her grandmother, and partly because she didn’t want to adapt to a new environment all over again.
Fortunately, after some persuasion by the second child, she accepted Xu Qian as her biological sister.
On the morning of the eighth day, Yu Ci had to return to the lab and was not present, but Mu Chenyan and Yu Heng, Yu Feng, Mu Jiawen and Jiang Yan, along with Xu Qian, Xu Ang, and Maomao—the eight people—set off from Beijing in two cars bound for Yunzhou.
They had not been on the road long before Yu Heng received a call from Lin Fei—
“A neighbor of Lin Jian’an came forward to report Ren Xiufen, saying she saw what happened fifteen years ago when Xie Huifang was taken away by human traffickers. That old woman often hung around that area, and most people knew she was no good. At the time, this neighbor was with her, planning to stop Xie Huifang, but Ren Xiufen talked her out of it, saying the old woman had accomplices, and she went home to tell Lin Jian’an to call a few men over. The neighbor had to leave due to an emergency at home and subsequently forgot about the incident.
Just by chance, that evening when Lin Jian’an asked me about it, this neighbor of his passed by the alley next to us and overheard the main points. The two families did not get along well because of fights between their children, and the neighbor said their son had caused some serious injuries during fights and had paid quite a bit in compensation over the years. Otherwise, they would not still be living in the old house after so many years, without even the money to buy a new one…”
The call was on speakerphone, but Xu Qian was not in that car.
After the call ended, Mu Chenyan said, “Let’s not tell Xu Qian about this, now or in the future. It has nothing to do with her, or that Lin Jian’an for that matter. Just leave them to their own devices.”
Sometimes the world works in mysterious ways; people do as they will, but heaven sees everything. If the law can’t deal with you, heaven will!
The highways were not as congested back then as they would be in the future, so the journey was smooth, and the group arrived at the Yunzhou City Police Station at three in the afternoon.
Before the cars even stopped, Mu Jiawen could see Zhou Youming’s car from a distance. Song Xiwen stood by the car with her head down, as Zhou Youming stood opposite her, speaking about something that made Song Xiwen raise her hand to cover her face.
The two cars stopped one after the other, and Jiang Yan, Mu Jiawen, and the others got out of the cars.
Zhou Youming, sensing their arrival, turned his head to look and then walked quickly toward them.
“Zhou… Brother Zhou.” Xu Qian was the first to greet Zhou Youming. She had a particularly good impression of him thanks to his help with the previous matter.
Zhou Youming exchanged pleasantries with Xu Qian before his gaze shifted toward Mu Jiawen, “Jiajia.”
“Brother-in-law, where’s Haohao?”
“I took him to my parents’ house.”
Mu Jiawen didn’t think much of it since Zhou Youming often took Song Xiwen and Haohao to his parents’ home for the New Year holidays. The grandparents always wanted to spend a few more days with Haohao, but Song Xiwen, concerned about Song’s third sibling and Xie Jingying, would only agree to stay at her in-laws’ until the second day before insisting on taking Haohao back to her parental home.
Because of this, the couple often had arguments, but Zhou Youming usually gave in and followed her back to Jianglin Village.
As for why the two had come back this time and left Haohao alone at the grandparents’, perhaps Song Xiwen had come to a realization.
“This is my mom, my eldest brother, and second brother,”
Mu Jiawen introduced Mu Chenyan and the two men to Zhou Youming, catching a glimpse of Song Xiwen slowly walking their way out of the corner of her eye.
Zhou Youming suddenly bowed ninety degrees to Mu Chenyan and then straightened up, saying, “Auntie, I apologize to you on behalf of Xiwen, I’m sorry!”
“There’s no need, not to mention that the past has nothing to do with you; even if Song Xiwen herself apologized to me, I wouldn’t accept it!”
As she spoke these final words, Song Xiwen had almost reached them, pausing in her tracks upon hearing them.
Mu Chenyan’s eyes swept over her fiercely, “Do you think a simple ‘sorry’ is enough to compensate for the pain of losing my daughter over these past decades? The last time I went to Jianghai Town, to Jianglin Village, I deliberately avoided your house because I didn’t want to see this person. It’s true she saved my daughter, but she also harmed her.”
Not daring to look at Mu Chenyan, Song Xiwen turned her head slightly towards Mu Jiawen and asked, “Jiajia, do you also think I harmed you?”
Whether it was sincere or not, she believed she hadn’t treated Mu Jiawen badly over the years. Even though she wasn’t home often, every time she returned, she gave her money, bought her food and clothes—where had she ever wronged her?
“Song Xiwen!”
Hearing her ask this, Zhou Youming immediately furrowed his brows and turned his head towards her.
Utterly unrepentant and failing to realize her own mistakes, all his words to her had been in vain.
“Hah!”
Mu Chenyan scoffed, “Look how ridiculous your apology is, she doesn’t even think she’s in the wrong; what’s the use of apologizing for her?”
Having said this, she turned her head to Xu Qian, “Let’s go, we should head inside to handle the procedures.”
The group didn’t pay any more attention to Song Xiwen, and as Jiang Yan passed by Zhou Youming, he patted him on the shoulder—a pity for such a red-blooded man to have a wife with such skewed moral values.
After everyone had left, Zhou Youming turned to look at Song Xiwen, his eyes filled with disappointment and devoid of the tenderness that had once been there.
Seeing the look in his eyes, Song Xiwen immediately became defiant, “Zhou Youming, what’s with that look? Are you really going to make a scene with me over a stranger?”
“Me, make a scene?” Unbelievable!
Looking at the Song Xiwen before him, Zhou Youming felt as though he was looking at a stranger, filled with even more confusion. Was his previous understanding of Song Xiwen all wrong?
“If it’s not you making a scene, could it be me? I’ve already told you before, I’ve come clean to Jiajia about her origins, and she said she doesn’t hold a grudge. Yet you’re still clinging to it. What does it mean? You’re defending her so fiercely? Is she more important to you than I am in your heart?”
Song Xiwen’s face, including the area around her eyes, turned red with anger, “Because of her, you sent Haohao to your parents, and you’ve been cold to me all this time. I’ve put up with it, and today I even came here to apologize to her mother, like you asked. But what can I do if they don’t accept it? They say I harmed her, but isn’t it also true that I saved her? How could they…”
“You saved Jiajia and think they should thank you?” Zhou Youming’s eyes were filled with scorn, “Thank them for tearing apart mother and daughter for over a decade?”
Speechless, Song Xiwen was choked up and couldn’t speak.
“I had no idea I was putting up with you. There’s absolutely no need for that!”
Song Xiwen looked up in shock, her voice trembling, “What do you mean? Are you suggesting divorce?”
