Chapter 192: Chapter 189: Childhood Fears (Three Updates) Chapter 192: Chapter 189: Childhood Fears (Three Updates) After school, Jiang Yan went to the physics building to pick up Song Jiawen.

Since he had promised to wait for her in the classroom, he simply parked his bike downstairs upon arriving and quickly made his way upstairs.

The freshmen were on the third floor, and Jiang Yan suddenly remembered that although he often came to the physics building, he had always waited outside for her. This was actually his first time walking inside.

He smacked his forehead, annoyed at himself. Ever since he had arrived in Beijing, he had been busy every day, running in circles. Not only had he failed to fulfill his original plan to enjoy college life, but he also hadn’t taken good care of Song Jiawen.

He found their classroom easily. Jiang Yan peeked in through the front door and saw Liang Yujun and the other two encircling her, along with a boy holding a thermos to her face.

Jiang Yan narrowed his eyes at the clean-cut pretty face and cleared his throat, calling out, “Jiajia.”

Liang Yujun and the others turned around and gestured for him to come in, saying, “Jiang Yan, Jiajia has a fever.”

Jiang Yan walked over and naturally placed his hand on her forehead. The burning heat made him frown involuntarily.

He turned to Liang Yujun and the others and said, “I’m taking her to the hospital first. Take her backpack back for her.”

Song Jiawen got up to leave, and as Xue Weisong stepped back he reached out to support her, saying, “Take it slowly.”

With her face flushed from the fever, Song Jiawen waved him off, “I’m fine, I can walk.”

She claimed she could walk alright, but as soon as she got to Jiang Yan, she leaned on him.

Her legs were indeed a little weak, and she had struggled to stay upright in class that afternoon. She could still put up a strong front in front of others, but with Jiang Yan, she wanted to do whatever felt comfortable. Even though leaning on him still wasn’t comfortable, she just didn’t want to walk anymore.

The temperature had dropped to around zero degrees these two days. Today, Jiang Yan was wearing a down jacket Song Jiawen had bought him, with a black turtleneck sweater underneath.

He hugged her and didn’t forget to throw a glance at Xue Weisong, whose face was filled with shock. Then he took off his down jacket and draped it over her, soothing her gently, “Put this on, it’s going to be cold outside.”

Song Jiawen stretched out her arms and slipped into Jiang Yan’s oversized down jacket and then climbed onto his back, closing her eyes with reassurance.

By the time they came down from the third floor, Song Jiawen had already fallen asleep.

Jiang Yan took out the bike key from his pocket with one hand and handed it to Liang Yujun, “Can you please help me park my bike near your dormitory’s shed? I’ll carry her and get a taxi.”

Liang Yujun took the key and put Song Jiawen’s down jacket hood up. Jiang Yan’s coat she wore outside reached down to her thighs. She was wrapped up pretty tightly and shouldn’t be cold.

But the distance from the physics building to the school gate was not short, and Jiang Yan was only wearing a sweater…

Yet, he didn’t say more and easily carried her away with long strides.

“Jiang Yan looks like such a good guy!” Ding Yuanyuan admired as she watched the two leave, saying, “If my boyfriend isn’t tall and strong like him, I definitely won’t take him.”

Sha Yali nodded, “That’s a reasonable demand to add. But even if it’s someone like Jiang Yan, Yuanyuan, you….”

As she spoke, she sized up Ding Yuanyuan’s increasingly plump figure with a light laugh, “You probably won’t be able to carry him very far either.”

“I’m just a little fluffy, not heavy. And you, Sha Yali, dare you take off your hat outside? Let me see how much hair you lost today?”

The girls joked and laughed on their way back, not noticing that not far behind them on the stairs, Xue Weisong was watching the departing figures with a deep and intent gaze…

Jiang Yan, with his long legs, didn’t take long to carry Song Jiawen to the main entrance.

He reached out to touch her forehead again, and maybe because they were outside now, her temperature didn’t seem as burning hot as before. Seeing that she was still sleeping soundly, he thought for a moment, hailed a taxi, and reported the name of Mu Chenyan’s residential community, Qinghe Garden.

When Jiang Yan arrived carrying Song Jiawen, Mu Chenyan was at home preparing to cook dinner. The housekeeper had taken the day off, so she had to prepare dinner herself.

When she heard the doorbell, she thought it was Yu Heng who had forgotten his keys and never expected her daughter, who only came over on Saturdays, to show up at this time.

“What’s happened?”

Mu Chenyan was startled, her voice quavering with fear as she saw her daughter, motionless on Jiang Yan’s back.

“It’s nothing, Auntie, she’s just asleep.”

As Jiang Yan entered the house, he quietly explained how she had gotten a severe cold and fever that afternoon, then said, “I was planning to take her to the hospital, but seeing as she was sleeping, I thought it’d be better to wait until she woke up and then check on her condition.”

After all, rushing to get IVs and medication for every cold might not be the most effective and could potentially weaken the immune system.

Mu Chenyan gratefully thanked Jiang Yan and led him towards Xiaosi’s room, equally quietly saying, “Let her sleep first, I will immediately call her second brother to come back.”

Her second son was a neurology specialist, but such a trivial cold was certainly not beyond his expertise.

Both of them helped Song Jiawen out of her clothes with light steps, and just as they were helping her lie down on the bed, she suddenly opened her eyes and grabbed Jiang Yan’s hand.

Her gaze was hazy, clearly not fully awake yet, but the fear on her face was all too visible!

If Song Xiwen had been there, she would have recognized this expression all too well; in the first few years after Jiawen came into her care, she would often wake up from nightmares in a panic and then clutch Xiwen’s arm tightly.

As she grew older, this phenomenon slightly eased, but her poor sleep never improved.

The fear rooted deep from her childhood traumas seemed permanent, with no knowing when it would completely dissipate.

Jiang Yan was shocked for a moment, but quickly spoke softly, “It’s me, Jiajia…”

Before Jiang Yan could finish his words, hearing the familiar voice and scent, Song Jiawen closed her eyes and fell back asleep, her hand still tightly clutching Jiang Yan’s.

Mu Chenyan watched this scene in a daze for a while, then, understanding, her eyes reddened.

She turned and walked back to the living room, picked up her mobile phone to dial Yu Feng’s number, “Your sister has a fever. Come back quickly.”

After hanging up the phone, she stayed in the living room for a good while, composing her emotions before returning to her daughter’s room.

Jiang Yan waited until Song Jiawen was completely asleep to pull his hand free, carefully tucked her in, and then walked out.

Thinking she was at her mother’s home, Mu Chenyan should be able to take good care of her. Yet before leaving, he couldn’t help but say, “Auntie, when she’s not feeling well, she likes to drink chicken and spinach porridge. Do you have chicken and spinach in the house? Or plain porridge with a cold shredded potato salad would also do, make the porridge a bit thicker…”

He listed a few of Song Jiawen’s favorite dishes, Mu Chenyan hastily took notes, asking him how they were made.

Jiang Yan: ….

He remembered how Song Jiawen had once diligently learned to cook from him. But, even though it was the same dish with the same seasonings, the outcome was a world apart, indescribable!

Looking at Mu Chenyan taking notes so carefully and earnestly, he suddenly understood…
