Chapter 98: Chapter 98 Changed My Mind
During these days, Shitou had read quite a number of books in Lu Yun’s space, and although most of them were about weapons and military affairs, he also browsed through many on strategy.
He also had the natural gift of a photographic memory and the ability to integrate what he learned, so in a very short time, he felt as if his horizons had vastly broadened, and even the world he saw seemed very different.
Though he felt that drugging from behind, even if the drugs didn’t cause too much harm, still wasn’t open and aboveboard, and it wasn’t to his liking. But since Xiaoyun seemed happy with it, he didn’t want to go against her wishes.
How exactly to proceed, he had pondered over and over again in his heart. The saying goes that even when a lion fights a rabbit, it uses all its strength; if he was going to do something, he wanted to do it perfectly.
His own father died early, and at a very young age, he had had to work hard just to fill his belly. Going to school was a luxury for him, and perhaps because he had never had the opportunity, he harbored a special yearning for books and knowledge.
As a child, whenever he had free time, he would sneak over to the school and hide outside the classroom windows to eavesdrop on lessons, thus learning quite a few characters. But it wasn’t until he started hanging around Brother Aiguo all day that he gradually familiarized himself with most of the characters—Brother Aiguo had attended school until junior high, so he was more than capable of teaching him to read.
Later, when he recognized most of the characters and his life got a bit better, he found ways to scavenge old books and newspapers from recycling stations and secretly read them.
He learned everything quickly and in a varied fashion. Often, he didn’t even need to be taught; just standing by and observing was enough for him to grasp the essentials...
Brother Aiguo would often sigh and say that his talents were wasted for not attending school; had he gone, in a few years, he would definitely have been a college student. At first, Shitou also felt regrets, but later on, he stopped thinking that way.
Everyone has their own path to walk in this world, and he was no different. He clearly knew what his dreams were. Thus, he always worked especially hard, thinking to seize every opportunity to achieve his dreams. Reading wasn’t the only way, but it was a convenient one.
"I want to go with you when you administer the drugs."
Lu Yun never felt at ease about Shitou handling the drugging on his own. This idea was her own invention. Originally, she had planned to do it herself. After all, Shitou was only fourteen years old and not yet of age to carry out dangerous missions. He had never done anything like this before, and any mistake could be too costly.
All of a sudden, Lu Yun started to question whether her decision to drug the Su Family was the right one. Especially as she was involving Shitou in such a deed, she felt like she might be leading a child astray. What if Shitou really did go bad because of her influence?
She hesitated, and her voice started to lose its strength as she spoke, "Now, my spiritual power can control a range of twenty-five or twenty-six meters, so with me coming with you, we won’t have to get close to them to achieve our goal."
"I can do it. You don’t need to intervene," Shitou said, ignoring her and pointing to her cauldron, "Just finish up and go to sleep."
"There’s no shame in making the most of every advantage you can use. If you refuse to use your own side’s advantages because of so-called face, that’s truly putting the cart before the horse."
Lu Yun sighed helplessly, feeling more and more regret. A boy of fourteen or fifteen is at an age where pride and face matter greatly, and when he’s most likely to go astray. His refusal of her help was actually quite normal because of face. However, she really hoped she wouldn’t lead him astray, or else the flap of a butterfly’s wings might once again cause a shift in events—who knows what might change then?
Lu Yun first put away the large cauldron and looked him in the eye, saying solemnly, "I’ve thought it over, let’s forget about the drugging incident. If we really did that, even if we could pull it off without a hitch, it would feel satisfying only temporarily. But by doing so, how would we be any different from the Su Family’s people? There’s no need for us to dirty our hands; those from the Su Family will mess themselves up enough without our interference."
"... Alright."
Shitou met her gaze, seriously studying it for a while, and only when he was sure that Lu Yun was serious, did he finally nod and show a hint of a smile.
Seeing him nod and smile, Lu Yun suddenly felt a sense of relief wash over her. She realized that perhaps Shitou also disliked such actions. His agreement was probably only to avoid rejecting her.
She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, silently making a resolution. Just as in her past life, the special medicines in her space would not be used to fight or harm others, except for self-defense.
Being able to be with her parents in this life was already a tremendous blessing. She did not want to let any dark shadows taint these wonderful days. The happier she felt, the less those dark days spent with the Su Family seemed to affect her.
"Shitou, there’s no need to spread any news to Su Huahua. As for the Su Family, think of something to keep them busy these next few days, at least until we leave. My mother and I would rather not see them again."
Lu Yun suddenly asked Shitou with a smile, "Do you think I’m being too saintly?" In her previous life, many people disdained such saintly behavior. She wondered if her current thoughts were a bit too "saintly."
Shitou raised an eyebrow, looking at her with puzzlement.
"It refers to being too weak, too tender-hearted, choosing to forgive those who have wronged us and making excuses for their innocence," Lu Yun explained.
"Are you that kind of person?" Shitou sized up Lu Yun from head to toe and asked with a smile. If she were that kind of person, she wouldn’t have asked him to dig up the ginseng that was supposed to be found by Su Family’s third son in her past life.
"Of course not," Lu Yun couldn’t help but laugh as Shitou asked her with a smile. She simply didn’t want to become any more "evil."
After all, being a "good person" with principles and boundaries was better than becoming a "bad person" who sought revenge at any cost. Unrestrained revenge might bring temporary pleasure, but it could never bring inner peace and tranquility.
She would rather slap someone in the face openly than resort to underhanded tactics behind their back. Otherwise, what would make her any different from those with dark hearts and malicious intentions?
After a good night’s sleep, even when her mother woke her up early the next day, Lu Yun didn’t feel the least bit tired. Not long after she got up, Aunty Lu and Zhang Cai arrived.
Thus, she ran around doing various trivial chores and kept everyone amused.
She resolved to change her solitary ways from the previous life, bit by bit. She had thought it would be hard, but using the guise of a child, she unexpectedly found that acting spoiled and cute was surprisingly easy and natural for her...
