Chapter 94: Chapter 94: Alliance of Two Friendly Companions
Lu Aiguo incessantly lamented. Second Uncle was such a shrewd man, why did he become so simple-minded when it came to his fourth brother, so much so that he had to make his words so clear?
This is why Shitou was more likable. He didn’t need to waste so many words; Shitou would understand his meaning immediately. But what could he do when the person in front of him was his fourth brother? He could only patiently teach him more.
"Since we want someone to help us take revenge from behind the scenes, shouldn’t we show some goodwill first?"
A smile appeared on Second Uncle’s face as he continued to walk forward slowly and leisurely.
"Isn’t it just that I didn’t think of it for a moment? If you didn’t mention it, I would have thought of it eventually," Lu Aibing muttered under his breath, feeling wronged.
"Don’t agree?"
Now he felt even more wronged? Lu Aiguo looked at Lu Aibing with a smile that wasn’t quite a smile. He had never had as much patience with Aibing as he had with Lu Aijiao and Lu Aimei. When they were children, the two of them had fought countless times behind the scenes before finally forming what was now a solid "two-man group alliance of friendship."
"How would I dare?" Lu Aibing couldn’t help but retort. He had known since childhood just how "dark-hearted and ruthless" his third brother was. Even when they fought outside, he had never seen him yield.
Yet, upon returning home, in front of their parents, he could switch to a facade that suggested they were close enough to share a pair of pants. Every time their mother lavishly praised his third brother, and he felt wronged and wanted to retort forcefully, his mother would believe his third brother over him. And if he didn’t play along with his third brother’s act and gave the game away, he would inevitably end up getting a beating afterward.
Fortunately, when united against outsiders, his third brother never let him suffer a loss. If it weren’t for the fact that his third brother’s reputation was particularly effective and even tough guys several years older than him didn’t dare to bully him because of it, he wouldn’t have gradually become more and more willing to respect his third brother.
No complaints then, good.
Lu Aiguo nodded in satisfaction, saw Second Uncle was getting a bit ahead, and quickly urged Lu Aibing to catch up.
Upon entering the main room, Second Uncle passed him a letter, which Lu Aiguo slid directly into his pocket without opening it.
Before the three of them had the chance to sit down, Zhang Cai brought in a plate of mushroom scrambled eggs and a plate of stir-fried river snails. Surprised at seeing them just enter the room, she asked, "Why did you walk so slowly?"
"..."
Second Uncle and Lu Aiguo both looked at Lu Aibing. Under the dual pressure, Lu Aibing became unexpectedly quick-witted and replied, "Didn’t we just stop for a while to admire the moon? It looked nice."
"Watching the moon?"
Zhang Cai’s eyes widened as if she couldn’t believe it, glanced at the three men, and then looked away without asking further.
The corner of Second Uncle’s mouth twitched.
"Thanks for the hard work, Sister-in-law. Tell Second Aunt not to bother making more dishes; we have enough here, make sure she doesn’t prepare anything else."
Lu Aiguo secretly glared fiercely at Lu Aibing. Such a terrible excuse. They weren’t women swooning over the moon. If you’re going to watch it, do it with your own wife, not with a dopey fool like you. What’s there to see?
Lu Aibing, long accustomed to being glared at, just grinned carelessly.
Lu Aiguo felt helpless.
"It’s not a bother. A plate of stir-fried Black Fungus with vegetables will be ready soon. Mom said not to make too much in the evening, to avoid you guys eating too much and feeling uncomfortable."
Zhang Cai finished speaking and, without lingering, turned around and left.
Zhang Cai stepped out, and the three men settled into their seats, sipping on some light drinks. Lu Aiguo picked out things that he could share and told Lu Aibing and his second uncle about their harvest from the trip to the mountains.
Soon enough, Zhang Cai really did bring in a plate of stir-fried fern, green and delightful to the eye.
"You guys take your time drinking, I’m going to help Mom pack up some stuff. She also said that tomorrow morning we’re going over to help the third sister-in-law with salting the pork. It would be too much for the third sister-in-law to handle all that pork by herself," said Zhang Cai cheerfully.
"That’s great, tomorrow Aibing and I are going to Xie’s village, so you guys don’t bother coming back for lunch. Just have my second uncle come straight over to eat," Lu Aiguo exclaimed with joy.
He had been worried about the folks from the Su Family harassing his wife while she was home alone and had been wondering how to persuade his second aunt to keep her company. This was like someone bringing a pillow as he was dozing off.
"That’s what Mom has in mind." Zhang Cai left with a smile, pursing her lips; just now, her mother-in-law had mentioned she would cook at Lu Aiguo’s house tomorrow and told her father-in-law to join them for the meal. It turned out Lu Aiguo suggested the same, as if it had been planned.
"This can’t go on, those people from the Su Family. Since a letter came from Haicheng, I think you all should pack up and get going these next few days. I’ll find someone to buy the tickets for you," said the second uncle while slowly chewing a mouthful of the fern dish, which indeed tasted better with a bit more oil.
"Alright. Actually, the packing is almost done. As soon as we get the tickets, we can leave at any time," Lu Aiguo agreed.
"I wonder what Haicheng is like? Is it much different from our countryside?" Lu Aibing asked, his face full of anticipation.
"It’s not the same, at least ten times bigger than our countryside," Lu Aiguo shook his head. Although he hadn’t been there himself, he heard it from Xia Yuan.
"That big?" exclaimed Lu Aibing, amazed.
...
When Lu Aiguo arrived home, it was almost half-past nine. He called out, and Shitou came out to open the door.
Once inside the main room, he saw Xia Yuan and Lu Yun each holding a book, engrossed in reading. The original table and chairs in the room had been cleared away, replaced by three single-backed sofas. Next to each sofa was a small tall table with a solar-powered camping lamp providing illumination; besides the lamp, only a soup bowl sat on each table.
Lu Aiguo approached the sofa where Xia Yuan was sitting and peeked in, seeing a half-bowl of red dates, white fungus, and goji berry soup remaining.
"You seem quite at ease on your own at home, huh?"
Reeking of alcohol, Lu Aiguo squeezed onto Xia Yuan’s single sofa. She slightly frowned and nudged him but didn’t voice her disgust.
"I didn’t drink much, actually. The three of us had less than half a bottle," Lu Aiguo said with a grin as he handed Xia Yuan a letter, and then casually picked up her leftover soup bowl, draining the red dates, white fungus, and goji berry soup in one go. After drinking, he smacked his lips and commented, "Too sweet."
"Is it a reply from sister?" Xia Yuan immediately became excited, taking the letter and hastily tearing it open to read.
"How is it?"
Lu Aiguo watched Xia Yuan’s face alternate between joy and concern and couldn’t help but ask anxiously. Lu Yun and Shitou also put down their books to look over.
"Sis says she’s found a lead on the housing front. It’s a protégé of her husband’s from the water plant; his wife’s relative has an empty yard, which is also on the street. But the downside is it’s a bit far from Xiaoyun’s school, at least a forty-minute walk," Xia Yuan shared.
"Isn’t there anywhere closer to the school?"
Lu Aiguo felt joy at first but then started to worry as well. Actually, a forty-minute walk wasn’t considered far, but Lu Yun was still young, and attending school was a matter of going regardless of the weather. It wasn’t feasible to have someone from home dedicated to accompanying her every day.
