Chapter 452: Chapter 436: Shitou Makes a Landing
Who was their daughter calling? General Manager, Director Xia? Was it as they thought?
Ye Father and Ye Mother’s gaze shifted from the middle-aged couple at the door—whose extraordinary identity was evident from their attire and the air about them—back to their own daughter, their eyes brimming with questions.
Ye Man didn’t react.
Even she herself was completely stunned, as she suddenly realized that "Gu Feng"—wasn’t this the name of the General Manager and Director Xia’s eldest son?
Xia Ye, Xia Ye—Gu Feng’s assumed name took his mother’s surname, and was a near homophone of the Gu character. How had she never thought about it from that angle?
All of the small details she had overlooked in the past suddenly magnified before her.
Ye Man remembered the day she first met Gu Feng; his attire was not as it was now. Back then, he was dressed like a professional in a suit and leather shoes; his shirt was made of silk, and the blazer that hung over his arm was unmistakably high-quality and well-crafted—not at all like something bought on the cheap.
Afterward, she almost never saw him dressed like that again. When she curiously asked about it, he explained that the clothes he wore that day were borrowed from a middle school classmate for a job interview.
Later, his clothes seemed much more ordinary, yet she often noticed they were almost always new. He wore the same few pieces over and over, but they remained as pristine as ever.
Back then, she hadn’t suspected anything different. She even imagined that he bought new clothes especially for their dates, so as not to appear shabby, and that he only wore them because he didn’t want to wear them at any other time, which was why they stayed so new.
She felt pity for a long time because of that. As time went on, she started giving him clothes. At first, worried about hurting his pride, she always found excuses to give them to him. Until, eventually, as their romantic relationship escalated and they began living together, she took care of all his clothes.
She was willing to spend money on him, buying clothes—mainly brand names on clearance at the change of seasons—even more expensive than what she wore daily.
She started to be stingy with herself, hesitating for a long time before buying any expensive clothes she liked, and even after biting the bullet and making the purchase, she would regret it for a long time. But if she found something suitable for him to wear, no matter how expensive, she would buy it without hesitation, feeling no regret afterward. Instead, she felt a satisfying excitement seeing him look so fit and handsome in them.
Now, it seemed that all those clothes were indeed "specially" bought for their dates—
Indeed, women in love are foolish; their IQs returned to zero.
"Xiaoman."
Ye Mother reached out and shook her daughter vigorously, her eyes involuntarily glancing back at the couple by the door before returning to her. Her mind still echoed the words "General Manager, Director Xia."
She knew about these two people her daughter mentioned. Reportedly, they were relatives of Lu Aiguo, the big boss of the Lu Group where her daughter worked. It wasn’t just that one was the general manager of the S City branch and the other was in charge of financial power as some kind of financial director.
It was said that the couple also owned shares in the company, and in addition to unimaginable high salaries, they received even larger annual bonuses.
I’ve heard that in addition to being richer than the average self-made businessperson, their family also holds quite a high social status in S City, with a wide network of connections. It’s said that even the mayor has private dealings with them.
Well, their daughter is nothing more than a humble secretary at Lu Group, yet the money she earns monthly is enough for them to boast about in the neighborhood. Not to mention the yearly company benefits from Lu Group; often, the best employees can take their families on trips. Thanks to their daughter, the family of three get to go on vacations almost every year for free, having gone abroad twice already.
Who knows how many people are envious of her daughter for that job; she really brings honor to the family.
It’s a pity, though, that her daughter’s marriage prospects haven’t been going smoothly. She had set her heart on an orphaned pauper with nothing to his name. Had her daughter not been unusually adamant about it, why would she agree to let her daughter be with a man who can’t even provide for himself?
The daughter was just too naive. What use is a good-looking man? Can he be eaten as food? Of course, the most important thing for a man is to be able to provide for the family. A poor couple is sad in many ways.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t persuade her daughter back then; the girl was quite headstrong. Now, it seems, being headstrong isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The sparrow could turn into a phoenix, and the frog actually might become a prince—
"Oh, mom, what’s wrong?" Ye Man was shaken several times by her mother’s persistent reaction before she snapped back to reality, and her response turned a bit sluggish.
"Nothing, nothing."
Ye Mother chuckled awkwardly, suffering from a bout of social embarrassment as she added uneasily, "You, child, Gu Feng’s parents are still standing at the door."
Her original intention was just to see if her daughter was daydreaming, worried that she might neglect the two people before her and cause discontent. Wanting to discreetly remind her, it seemed the daughter, perhaps heavily affected or due to the pregnancy, turned silly and blurted out her question so loudly. How was she supposed to respond?
Indeed, there’s truth to the old saying that a woman becomes silly for three years with pregnancy.
Aside from Ye Man, the metaphorical black lines on Ye Mother’s forehead were seen by everyone.
Xia Na noticed Ye Mother’s discomfort and couldn’t help wanting to laugh. She didn’t try to hide it, her face brimming with a bright smile. Taking a few steps forward, she took Ye Mother’s hands with both of hers, speaking with heartfelt sincerity:
"Mother-in-law, I really didn’t expect that the girl Gu Feng would fall for would be our company’s Xiaoman. Don’t you think this shows how in sync our hearts are as mother and son?
I had actually taken a liking to Xiaoman a long time ago. Having observed for many years, I truly believe that a girl with such a rare good nature and understanding is especially suited to be our family’s daughter-in-law. You really know how to raise a daughter; you’ve raised such a wonderful girl.
Don’t laugh at me, who wouldn’t want to snatch away such a good girl the moment they see her? So, I’ve really settled on her as my future daughter-in-law. You mustn’t feel reluctant to part with her; think of it as your daughter gaining two more parents to dote on her, and you gaining a son to help you out, alright?"
"Not at all. Isn’t it normal for girls to marry off when they grow up? There’s a saying that ’a grown daughter should not be kept at home; trying to keep her only leads to animosity.’ As long as Xiaoman and Gu Feng really care for each other, and you are satisfied with her, her father and I couldn’t be happier."
Hearing Xia Na speak in such a friendly and down-to-earth manner, expressing thoughts that were genuinely heartwarming, the weight on Ye Mother’s mind seemed to lift off the ground.
