Chapter 440: Chapter 424: Taking on an Apprentice

"Why does it take as long as forty-eight hours? Is that also a security measure? But what if the person who brings in a stranger is coerced? Once the two are locked in the elevator, wouldn’t that be dangerous?" Lu Yun wondered.

"You’re right to guess that the forty-eight hour requirement is indeed for security considerations. Because the number of people who actually have access to this place is extremely limited, and furthermore, every eight hours there is a special review to prevent any mistakes.

If it’s a new addition, the review is even stricter, and it has to be reported to the highest authority for repeated verification each time. Moreover, the reviews are done cross-referentially. Try calculating, how many times will it go through verification in forty-eight hours?

As for the safety of those coerced, that has been taken into account too. Do you remember the elixir you provided that can paralyze a person’s body instantly?"

Shitou smiled at Lu Yun.

"The enhanced version of that. Of course, I remember. It seems that even you wouldn’t be able to handle it and would be paralyzed for at least three minutes." Lu Yun looked around and nodded with a smile, "I can’t believe you’ve actually adopted that too. So, does this mean that your security measures are armed to the teeth?"

"As soon as the alarm is sounded, guards can be on site within thirty seconds, sixty at the latest. But nothing is absolute in this world; there’s no shortage of talented individuals with brilliant gifts who haven’t focused their minds on the right track."

Shitou was neither affirming nor denying, his face full of confidence, "But we aren’t pushovers here either; we’ve considered everything we could. And this is still only the first or second level of defense. For someone who really breaks in to achieve their goal and escape unscathed, well, that’s not such an easy task."

"All this secrecy makes me rather eager."

"You won’t be disappointed."

As they spoke, the elevator ’dinged’ and arrived. Shitou took her hand, and they passed several more checkpoints before they finally arrived at the destination—a sea entrance that was no different from the ones used by cosmic spaceships.

"Who would have thought this would have been researched and applied so quickly?" Even though she was prepared, Lu Yun was still startled for a moment before laughing, "All this complexity, even if someone could get through the many levels to this place, if they do not have the protective suit or elixir, or even if they do but don’t know how to use it, wouldn’t trying to open this door be futile?"

"Correct."

A strong laugh gleamed in Shitou’s eyes, "The defenses aren’t only above but below as well. Even the elixirs are diluted; they’re not strong enough to support a month underwater. Without a guide, it’s hard to reach the designated location in time."

"Tampering with the elixirs, are you learning from the Da’er Clan? Then how long can the elixirs we’re using now last?" Lu Yun suddenly found it amusing.

"Isn’t it good to be economical? The diluted elixirs have been repeatedly tested by experts. One dose can only support about five to six hours underwater," Shitou said, his voice laced with pride.

"The trip down takes about two to two and a half hours. As soon as this door is opened, the on-duty personnel underwater will be aware, and there are cameras at fixed points along the way. But just in case, if no one arrives by the appointed time, a search and rescue team will come out to investigate. This is also to prevent the possibility of our own people having an accident."

The two of them spoke as they changed into underwater protective suits, took the elixir, and descended through the hatch into the sea.

Underwater was not the cosmic spaceship Lu Yun had expected, but rather a sizeable complex, the outer material of which was exactly what they had seen the Da’er Clan using as temporary shelter materials back then.

"It’s amazing, how did you accomplish this in such a short time?"

After circling the entire complex, Lu Yun was very impressed. They weren’t at the bottom of the ocean at ten thousand meters; the reason the journey took so long was that the path was quite convoluted. Moreover, over the years, both Lu Yun and Shitou had made great strides in their Psychic Power Cultivation, so communication between them underwater was no longer an obstacle.

"The external building materials have been found to be not difficult to replicate after research, and what’s more, this material is not only lightweight and extremely pressure-resistant but also widely useful, which is a delightful surprise. However, it does have a downside: the production is too low. It requires a special, rare mineral which so far has been found in only one place underwater and it wasn’t discovered by us, but marked on that world mineral map," Shitou said with a hint of regret.

"Oh—" Lu Yun nodded in understanding, "That’s already quite impressive."

She paused, "Since my access authorization is set to be second only to yours, you bringing me here today must be about more than just letting me see the place, right?"

"Actually, it’s about revisiting an old matter; the higher-ups still hope that you can train more pharmacists," Shitou said with a hint of helplessness, "Grandfather has already used various excuses to push it off a few times, but it might not be good to refuse again this time. However, the choice and number of apprentices are for you to decide."

"Take on apprentices?"

Lu Yun laughed, "I myself have only just managed to refine a first-level Gene Elixir, barely reaching the status of a Grade-One Pharmacist. It really feels a bit too early to be taking on apprentices, for fear of leading others astray."

"Do you know how many people are lining up hoping for you to ’lead their children astray’?" Shitou joked in response to her words.

"I can teach, as long as there is a sufficient supply of medicinal herbs. I won’t interfere with the number of students; it won’t be hard to take some time to instruct and teach them. If we really can train more pharmacists, it would alleviate a lot of my pressure, and it wouldn’t be like now, where every step I take requires such a massive operation as if I might encounter some mishap."

Lu Yun had already considered this issue before and knew that "taking on apprentices" was something that would have to be faced sooner or later. The fact that the superiors had given her so many years before pressuring her was already quite generous. She never intended to keep her knowledge hidden forever; after all, the more pharmacists, the better.

Furthermore, training a pharmacist is genuinely difficult; it takes decades to progress from an Apprentice Pharmacist to a Grade-One Pharmacist.

Isn’t it evident that even with her SS-grade Psychic Power Talent and the unlimited supply of medicinal herbs in the space, her transition from apprentice to first-level was so challenging?

The struggle doesn’t highlight her ineptitude; on the contrary, she was progressing at an exceptional speed. Of course, if she had had guidance from the beginning, her path would have been much smoother.
