Chapter 419: Chapter 403 Buying a House (Part 1)

Thinking of Deng Ximei, her heart filled with exceptional sweetness.

Not long after getting married, she gave birth to a son, which pleased Grandpa, Father-in-law, and Mother-in-law immensely, and they treated her even better.

However, for the first few years, she was quite puzzled in her heart. Her family was clearly from out of town, but why had nobody ever mentioned going back to their old home? Not only had they never returned to Yushu Village for the New Year, but there were also no relatives or fellow villagers from there who ever came to visit?

Seeing that her family avoided this topic like a taboo, she initially didn’t dare to ask. But after her son was born, and seeing Su Kai’s consistent kindness toward her, she plucked up the courage to secretly ask him, and that’s how she gradually learned about some of the past events.

Su Kai hesitated and struggled for a long time, but in the end, he chose to be honest without hiding anything from her; he told her all about his family’s and the Lu Family’s past grievances and conflicts. Even though Deng Ximei could clearly tell that Su Kai tried to remain calm when speaking of the past, he kept stealing glances at her reaction, appearing extremely anxious.

After she heard everything, she felt heartache for his childhood experiences and even more for his current appearance— so apprehensive and afraid that she would despise him.

She held him tightly and suddenly nothing else mattered. What did it mean to have no family visits? If Su Kai hadn’t gone through such experiences, how could she have possibly met this man who was truly good to her?

What happened afterward seemed only natural to Deng Ximei.

After arriving in S City, the Su Family quickly sold off the fields and house in Yushu Village, and ultimately chose to settle down in S City by buying a house and completely severing ties with the old home. In the end, Su Kai married her, and their family truly stayed here to put down roots.

Even though their house in S City wasn’t large—just over seventy square meters and crammed with three generations—Deng Ximei was very content to have a place that provided shelter from the elements.

Su Kai found a job, and because he was somewhat smart, observant, and cherished the hard-earned life, he worked diligently and thus was doing fairly well.

Other members of the Su Family, Grandpa Su Laoliu, Father-in-law Su Jialao, and Mother-in-law He Damei, though elderly, also changed their attitudes from their earlier days in Yushu Village. Facing the life in the city where money was required for everything, they developed a sense of crisis and were unwilling to sit idle; they would buy vegetables and fruits in bulk and run a small stand in the market. Despite the hardship of getting up early and coming back late, the money they earned kept their spirits high.

Even though Deng Ximei had no idea exactly how much money Grandpa and the in-laws earned, as Mother-in-law He Damei had control over it, she would always give more than enough for the household expenses. Additionally, the money that Su Kai earned was managed by Deng Ximei, and she hardly had any opportunity to spend it.

He Damei also never inquired whether she was spending Su Kai’s money or saving it, or if she was using it to help her own family.

Of course, she would never consider doing such a thing as helping her own family financially. She was well aware that from the moment she escaped her home, she had lost hope in her family. And when Su Kai later gave her family a substantial amount of money, she felt even more that she had repaid her parents for their upbringing.

After having her own son, she devoted herself entirely to her own little family, thinking about how to save money for her son to get married.

On a typical day, Deng Ximei would take care of the child, do housework, buy groceries, and cook at home. Every now and then, He Damei would give her some pocket money, telling her to buy whatever she wanted to eat and not to be too frugal with herself, insisting that the family wasn’t short of money for her expenses.

Even when she noticed that He Damei wasn’t wearing much jewelry or fine clothes, she would buy extras for herself and include He Damei’s share. Deng Ximei also remembered how when she gave birth to her son, her mother-in-law had devotedly helped her with the postpartum period and with child-rearing, making her feel quite content with such a mother-in-law.

So even if her mother-in-law sometimes lost her temper or inevitably scolded her when she was in a rush, she pretended not to see when her mother-in-law occasionally showed signs of jealousy because Su Kai was being too nice to her.

People aren’t perfect, and she felt she had already fallen into a pit of fortune; being any more discontent would just be sheer greed.

"I’m really fine, Mom, stop nagging," Su Kai said impatiently.

"Fine, fine, have it your way," He Damei finally gave in to her son, walking away with a sullen expression.

In the living room, Su Family’s sixth and the third brother were both munching on pears while watching cartoons with Su Yishan, the Su Family’s treasured four-year-old grandson. Seeing her come out, the Su Family’s third softly grumbled, "You shouldn’t always frown upon the couple’s good relationship; do you really want them to fight and argue all day long? Would it make you happy to see the family become unsettled?"

"I’m not like that at all. You’re not starting to be biased as well, are you?" He Damei retorted in a low but unconvinced tone.

"You’re the one in charge of the household’s major finances, except for our daughter-in-law who has her and Xiaokai’s salaries. Dad and I have absolutely nothing in our pockets, and we have to get your approval even to buy a pack of cigarettes. Aren’t you ashamed to say such a thing?"

The third brother rolled his eyes without a hint of anger in his tone; he was merely stating a fact.

"The money I’m in charge of is ultimately going to be left for the grandson. Are you afraid I’m going to give it to someone else?" He Damei replied, lightly patting the third brother while smiling.

"Xiaokai’s mother, I eavesdropped yesterday, and it seems like the family living in the apartment below us with a yard in our neighboring building is planning to sell and move away. Do we have enough money? If so, we might as well buy their place. The apartments upstairs are becoming too cramped, and when Yishan grows up, there won’t even be space for him to get married," Su Family’s sixth suddenly mentioned to He Damei.

"Dad, did you find out how much they’re selling the house for?" He Damei’s eyes lit up; she had long coveted that spacious, many-roomed ground floor apartment with a yard.

Just thinking about securing that place meant they would no longer have to worry about their tricycles being stolen from downstairs, even when locked with several locks. The memory of the several tricycles they had lost over the years made her heartache.

"Their place is two connected 60 square meter units, plus the small yard. They’re eager to sell, and since they can’t find a buyer so quickly, the price is not too high; they said they’d sell for 550,000 in one go," the sixth brother calculated mentally and felt that the money the three of them had earned over the years should be enough.

"550,000?"

Even with her expectations set, He Damei still gasped, "We do have enough money and some to spare. But when we bought this place back in the day, it cost us less than 60,000 yuan, and it hasn’t been that many years, has it?"

"Have you forgotten? We bought our place in the first half of the year, and by the second half, the housing prices had tripled. You were even sighing that we didn’t have enough money; if we had, we wouldn’t have to work so hard selling vegetables," the third brother said.
