Chapter 409: Chapter 393 Mockery
Sigh, a grown child isn’t under the mother’s control!
Mother Gu was filled with sorrow, yet her foolish daughter who lacked any sense of judgment...
But then again, with her husband, sons, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and grandkids all here, the only one who had stepped forward to speak up for her was her daughter, after all. She truly hadn’t doted on her for nothing. Didn’t they see that everyone was afraid to cross Gu Feng and thus dared not utter a word?
"There’s no need to buy water. The car has a fridge, and there are several kinds of beverages and mineral water inside that you can drink once we get on," Gu Tianming said with a meaningful glance at his own sister and brother-in-law.
"Exactly, let’s just grab our luggage and go. Why would we need water? Didn’t we already have drinks on the plane?" Gu Tianming’s older brother immediately chimed in, as the others nodded repeatedly in haste.
Once the luggage was collected, Gu Tianming was slightly taken aback. It was too little; a dozen people had brought only three suitcases in total, one per family. Gu Tianming’s parents were even more straightforward, bringing nothing at all with them.
"I remember the last time I stayed here with your dad, we left some clothes at your place. Since we have clothes at home, it would be superfluous to lug all that extra stuff around," Mother Gu said, seeing Gu Tianming staring blankly at the luggage. She snorted coldly, "Your wife hasn’t thrown out our things, has she? Hmph--"
Although Mother Gu didn’t say "I knew she was no good," that one cold snort was enough to make her meaning perfectly clear.
"It was thrown out, but not by Xia Na. I checked the items that were left, and the only things remaining were old clothes you’ve brought from Haicheng before. Didn’t you take all the new clothes Xia Na bought for you? So, I just threw everything else away. It wasn’t worth anything. Since you didn’t bring clothes, we’ll just buy a couple of new sets for changing this time around," Gu Tianming replied, holding back his irritation.
He recalled the moment when the housekeeper was tidying up the room his parents had stayed in. She had specifically come to ask him whether to keep or throw away those old clothes. He had not thought much of it then, but now it seemed likely that Xia Na knew whether she decided to keep or dispose of the old clothes, she would probably face complaints either way.
He sighed inwardly.
"Well, since you’re buying, get us more, and have your wife take us shopping while we’re at it. Buy a few sets for everyone. I know for a fact that clothes here in S City are much cheaper and better looking than in Sea City," Mother Gu stated as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"Xia Na won’t have time for that. She’s already swamped with both family and company matters, not to mention preparing for Gu Meng’s wedding. Since you’re here, you can go out and shop more yourselves. That way, you can find something that suits your taste even better," Gu Tianming flatly refused.
"Then you have to give us money. You earn so much money in a year. If you don’t spend more on your own siblings, it’s all going to be wasted by your wife..."
Finally, the group split into two business vans. Gu Tianming’s father, mother, and the younger children joined him in one van, while Mother Gu didn’t forget to nag Gu Tianming like this.
"Do you think my money grows on trees? You all just see how much money we make, but do you see the hard work we put in because of that? Besides, it’s not just me who earns the money. Besides providing for my wife and children, and apart from my duty to give some filial piety to you, my siblings all have their own families and children, and have long been separate households. Tell me, who else has the right to boldly ask me to spend money on them?"
Gu Tianming suddenly felt a deep sense of regret. After years apart, he had gradually forgotten what kind of people his parents were, remembering only their kindness, which led him to feel an obligation to compensate them.
To his mind, the money he had spent on his parents seemed significant to an ordinary family, but for his economic situation, it was but a drop in the ocean. No matter how much his parents were at fault, he saw no reason why he should live in luxury while they suffered.
However, it now seemed that, because he had indeed been too generous with his parents, he had inadvertently nurtured their greed to the extent that they harbored thoughts of robbing the rich to aid the poor.
"You unfilial son, can’t you spare some money to help your brothers and sisters?" When Gu’s mother saw how stern he was, she suddenly started wiping away tears and tried to use the strategy of appealing to pity.
"I remember on dad’s side there are several of our uncles whose lives aren’t so well-off, right? Mom, why didn’t you suggest helping them out more? Instead, you refuse to let them come even when I’ve offered the plane tickets," Gu Tianming retorted.
"Why should we?" his mother began indignantly. "In the past, when we were poor, they looked down on us. That year when your brother fell ill and we asked for help, they clearly had the money but refused to lend it to us, fearing we couldn’t repay. How many obstacles did your aunts and uncles place in my way over the years..."
Mid-sentence, Gu’s mother suddenly realized what was happening, "So you’re blocking me on this--how can you compare the two? Which one of them has ever been kind to our family? Have you forgotten, when you were little and visited their homes, how your aunt handed out candy and seeds to everyone but deliberately left you out?"
Gu’s father remained silent and expressionless as his wife spoke.
Gu Tianming broke into a bitter smile, "Mom, wasn’t Xia Na treated the same way when she lived in our family? Which of the sisters-in-law and younger siblings, and Xiaoru, didn’t stab her in the back? Don’t think I don’t know about the grievances she suffered in our home, even Gu Feng and Gu Meng, the two brothers, hold her closer to their hearts than you do.
"Just look back at when we were moving to S City, how difficult it was then. We wanted to leave Gu Feng and Gu Meng with you for a few years, but instead of just saying you had so many reasons to avoid it, the kids themselves didn’t want to go. Why was that?
"Compared to their own uncles and aunts, their little aunt cared for them much more sincerely. Back in those days, both kids could drink half a pound of milk daily just like Xiaoyun, and their aunt and uncle always made sure the three children had what they needed equally. Which one of you did that?
"You’ve even said Gu Feng and Gu Meng aren’t close enough to you. But me, am I not also distant from my own deceased grandparents?"
"You... are you holding a grudge against us now?" Gu’s mother, her tears forgotten, looked at him with a mix of frustration and embarrassment.
"Grudge or not, Xia Na still allowed you to live much better than the others. If you still feel she hasn’t done enough and expect me to divide up all my estate among my siblings, then never mind whether Xia Na and the children agree, I am the first who would refuse," he said scornfully.
With a face full of derision, Gu Tianming wondered how many people could truly live by the maxim ’Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire’?
