Chapter 396: Chapter 382 Harmony
"Teacher Yan? Xiaoyun, was Sijia’s mom also your teacher?"
Xia Yuan asked with some confusion. She had met almost all the teachers who had taught Lu Yun since elementary school, but she had no impression of Yan Suying?
The way Lu Yun called out startled everyone, mouths agape, including Yan Suying herself. She looked at Lu Yun in surprise, recalling for a long time but still couldn’t remember ever teaching her, "I really have no recollection of teaching you?"
"Teacher Yan, you’ve forgotten, Haicheng No. 6 Central Primary School. Back in the fifth grade, our class teacher, Ms. Cao, was having a baby, and you substituted for our class for two months. Our whole class was captivated by your charm at that time; not only were your lessons outstanding, but you were also exceptionally gentle. Unfortunately, you soon transferred to another school and our class got a new teacher—we were all heartbroken about it. I can’t believe you’re Sijia’s mother," Lu Yun explained with a smile, clearing up everyone’s confusion.
"So that’s what happened. I was wondering why there would be a teacher of Xiaoyun’s that I didn’t recognize. Now that you mention it, I do remember—you did talk about it at the time, and you kept saying it was such a pity. Teacher Yan, who would have thought that after so many years, not only would our Xiaoyun become college classmates with Sijia, but also close friends. The connections between people are really too miraculous."
Once Lu Yun brought it up, Xia Yuan also suddenly remembered and immediately showed even more enthusiasm towards Yan Suying. Over these past few days, she had taken a liking to Feng Sijia, finding her polite and well-mannered—an admirable girl. Learning that her mother was a teacher, she felt even more satisfied. What mattered the most was that this girl had been one of the rare female friends that Xiaoyun had had over the years.
Heaven knows how worried she had been, her daughter not having any close friends to play with from childhood till now.
"Oh my, this is such a coincidence, Suying, to have taught such a good student and yet not remember her,"
Feng Sijia’s aunt slapped her thigh and exclaimed with joy, thrilled beyond words. Her niece’s and sister-in-law’s connection to the Lu family’s daughter implied that her son would be even more favored by the Lu family.
Xia Yuan saw through her subtle intentions at a glance, and she smiled, but didn’t feel any particular aversion.
"I have some memory of that, but I really don’t have a strong recollection of the students in your class back then... It’s probably because I’m getting older, and my memory isn’t what it used to be," Yan Suying said with a self-deprecating smile.
"That’s perfectly normal. Teacher Yan, you have had a broad impact, having taught so many students. It would be impossible to remember each and every student from a class you only temporarily took over," Xia Yuan said matter-of-factly, prompting others to nod in agreement.
"I can’t believe my mom was once your teacher, what a pity that we didn’t know each other when we were kids. Otherwise, we could have been good friends a long time ago," Feng Sijia said with a hint of melancholy to Lu Yun.
"I was quite aloof as a child. Even if we had met back then, I reckon it would be pretty much the same as now, and we would only start to talk more once we got to university," Lu Yun gave her a look and spoke seriously.
"Is that true? Did you really not make friends before?" Feng Sijia was taken aback.
"She’s always been unsociable, forever immersed in her books and not interested in playing. I don’t know who she takes after. I’ve been terribly worried in private, fearing she’d become too buried in her studies. Thankfully, she made a friend in you after getting to college," Xia Yuan said to Lu Yun in a mildly annoyed tone before smiling at Feng Sijia.
"Having children who can focus on their studies is a good thing. If Sijia could do so too, perhaps she could even become a top scorer in the college entrance examination. I would be thrilled if that happened. Making friends can wait until they are older; there’s no hurry,"
Having seen children of various personalities as well as those who preferred play to study, Yan Suying didn’t find anything wrong with a diligent student like Lu Yun. On the contrary, her professional habit made her particularly fond of sensible children who were dedicated to their studies.
She and Xia Yuan gradually got into a conversation, and Feng Sijia’s aunt also chimed in with a few words whenever she found an opening.
Seeing that they were hitting it off but the topics weren’t of interest to them, Lu Yun pulled Feng Sijia aside to talk privately.
While the Lu Family’s old residence was harmonious, the atmosphere at the Su Family home in Yushu Village also seemed quite cordial.
Upon returning from outside, Su Lao Liu immediately noticed Chen Juxiang hunched over, tremblingly carrying a bucket of swill to the pigsty, having to stop every few steps because it was particularly strenuous for her, and because the swill bucket was too full, it sloshed around, splashing much of it onto her.
His youngest son and grandson appeared completely oblivious to Chen Juxiang’s plight.
The two were sitting under the eaves, picking their teeth and discussing with great interest the dishes served at the Lu Family’s banquet. It looked as though they had just returned from eating there.
Su Lao Liu didn’t find anything wrong with his youngest son and grandson’s behavior; on the contrary, he frowned upon seeing Chen Juxiang covered in filth and scolded her discontentedly, "Worthless! What’s the use of feeding you? You can’t even feed the pigs properly. If you let our pigs get thinner, I’ll slaughter you for sale at the end of the year."
Upon hearing this, Chen Juxiang didn’t dare talk back. Instead, she shivered violently and dared not stop, biting her teeth to push herself a few steps more before she had to stop to catch her breath, fearing Su Lao Liu would kick her as he had done before on a whim.
However, today Su Lao Liu clearly wasn’t in the mood to beat anyone; he had just come back from a satisfying meal and wasn’t ostracized by the other villagers, so he was in quite a good mood.
These past few days were his granddaughter’s wedding, and after so many years, perhaps because they hadn’t done anything outrageous or tried to harass Lu Yun again, the Lu Family seemed to show them goodwill. They had even sent someone ahead of time to invite them to the banquet and hinted that if they continued to behave, they could grow potatoes in their fields and sell them at a high price to Lu Group in the future.
Just that thought was enough to excite Su Lao Liu, making him feel as though he finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, he didn’t get overly excited. After pondering the implicit message, he allowed everyone in his family to go to the feast, ultimately refusing to let Chen Juxiang go.
He knew well that the Lu Family despised Chen Juxiang to their bones, decidedly unwilling to see her again. Su Lao Liu’s decision was supported by the entire Su Family; over the years, everyone felt that the Lu Family’s aversion towards them was because of Chen Juxiang’s malice, and they all loathed her deeply.
To prevent Chen Juxiang from getting any ideas and causing trouble again, the members of the Su Family took turns staying at home to keep a watchful eye on her.
Of course, while they didn’t invite Chen Juxiang to the banquet, they couldn’t let her starve. So, at each mealtime, Su Lao Liu’s daughter-in-law would take a bowl to the banquet and then bring back the leftovers, killing two birds with one stone: Chen Juxiang was fed, and the pigs’ feed was taken care of.
"Grandpa, even if you want to slaughter and sell her, there’s got to be a buyer. With that foul stench - it’s ingrained in her, and nobody can wash it off. Who would dare eat meat from her body?" chuckled his grandson, responding to Su Lao Liu’s remark.
"Shush, you kids shouldn’t run your mouths like that. Don’t talk like this outside. You’re of age to get married; don’t let others hear and speak ill of you, preventing you from finding a wife."
Right then, Su Lao Liu’s daughter-in-law came in carrying a big bowl of leftover food, just in time to overhear her son and promptly gave him a warning.
