Chapter 379: Chapter 365: A Willingness on Both Sides

Watching the blazing fire envelope Helen and the thirty members of the Da’er Clan who had followed her, turning to ash and then scattered into the sea only to be washed away by the waves without a trace--

Lu Yun and Shitou both silently heaved a sigh of relief.

The cremation followed by the scattering of the decedent’s ashes in nearby rivers, lakes, seas, or plains, forests, and valleys was a longstanding custom of the Da’er Clan.

Since this was the custom of the Da’er Clan people, Lu Yun and Shitou were not surprised and naturally respected it.

Being slaves in life, the Da’er Clan had grown accustomed to a life devoid of even personal freedom; how could they expect their masters to bestow upon a slave a piece of land for burial? Over time, this had formed their "custom."

As for their mistress, the noble Helen, it was certain that her family would not have this kind of "custom," but who cared anymore?

Returning to the small plaza at the entrance, surrounded by Da’er Clanspeople who had emerged from their houses in plain clothes, they all stood silently, looking at Shitou and Lu Yun with eyes full of reverence.

They had attended many such funerals before; death was like the snuffing out of a lantern, and mourning was but a temporary emotion. Now, they were more concerned about other matters.

While the two honored guests had gone out to see off their former mistress and clanspeople, the elders had already sought their opinions. Seeing the two in front of them who might very well become their new masters, everyone’s gaze held a touch of eagerness.

"Do you have something to say?" Seeing Bo Ya struggling as if having a toothache and on the verge of speaking, Shitou couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.

"Yes, two honored guests, we do have a somewhat presumptuous request. Could we please ask you to come to the council hall to discuss it?" Bo Ya bowed to Shitou and Lu Yun, making a gesture of invitation, looking at them expectantly.

"Let’s go."

Shitou readily agreed, taking Lu Yun by the hand and gesturing for them to lead the way. They had a feeling that their purpose for this visit might not be too difficult to accomplish, given the unusual courtesy of the Da’er Clanspeople that day.

Bo Ya was overjoyed and quickly signaled Sa Duo to lead the way. He, along with Yaluo, Sizhi, Dan Le, Pusi, Langjia, and Liya, did not walk beside Lu Yun and Shitou this time but respectfully followed behind.

The council hall.

"Speak, what do you want to discuss?" Shitou did not intend to engage in undue chatter with them, so as soon as they entered the council hall and everyone was seated, he went straight to the point and asked.

"We would like to request that the two of you take us as servants. We are willing to serve both of you as our masters, and we are willing to dedicate everything we have to our master,"

All of them, including Bo Ya, stood up and looked at them with hope.

"If you’re going to dedicate everything to us, what do you hope to gain from us?" Shitou and Lu Yun glanced quickly at each other, and with a smile, he asked.

They were on the same page, and it seemed their goal would be effortlessly achieved.

"We only ask for the chance to leave the bottom of the sea and return to land to proliferate. If in the future our master becomes an official Pharmacist and crafts the Gene Elixir, perhaps our clanspeople could also be gifted a share. Besides that, we ask for nothing else. Rest assured, once we have acknowledged a master, we will never betray them,"

Bo Ya said without a moment’s hesitation.

"If we dare accept you, we naturally won’t fear your betrayal," Shitou said confidently before raising an eyebrow skeptically, "That’s all you’re asking for? Don’t you have any desire to leave this star system and return to your ancestral home?"

"Where do the Da’er Clan have a homeland to speak of?" Before Bo Ya could answer, Yaluo spoke up sorrowfully.

"Long, long ago, it is said that our Da’er Clan also came from a primitive planet. Unfortunately, it was discovered by a group of interstellar adventurers. Eventually, the entire planet fell under the ownership of that group of adventurers; the planet was sold, and all of the clanspeople were transported to sell in different distant star systems."

On the faces of Bo Ya, Sizhi, and Dan Le, a deep sadness was apparent.

However, Sa Duo, Pusi, Langjia, and Liya’s faces showed more confusion, as living in the deep sea from birth, they rarely had the opportunity to encounter outsiders besides their own clanspeople.

Their lives were monotonous, with little entertainment, and the one necessity was to hunt for subsistence, dealing with various creatures of the seabed...

Without experiences, profound feelings could not arise. Regarding their homeland, their very origins, even if they had heard the elders describe it, it was just a story to them.

Covering her face and beginning to cry, Yaluo lamented, "Over time, the majority of us had lost even the knowledge of the name of the planet where our ancestors were originally born, or to which star system it belonged. Even if we could remember, what then? The original name of that planet has likely changed long ago. How could we possibly return? In truth, we have long since lost any so-called homeland."

Lu Yun and Shitou’s expressions shifted subtly, and their hearts were filled with even greater relief; they had narrowly avoided...

"Sorry, we didn’t mean to invoke your heartache,"

Lu Yun passed a clean handkerchief to Yaluo, "Wipe your face. We agree to what you’ve said. We will provide you with an island where no one will disturb you to live on, and we will supply food and water regularly. However, the Gene Elixir will have to wait, as you know I’m only an apprentice Pharmacist."

"You agree to take us as your servants, to lead us away from here? Thank you, thank you, Master,"

Taking the handkerchief from Lu Yun, Yaluo wiped her tears and then burst into a fit of crying and laughter upon realization.

Bo Ya, Sa Duo, and the others seemed relieved, with smiling faces all around.

"Yes, we agree. But can your opinions represent everyone’s?" Shitou also spoke up.

"Yes, yes, it’s fine. We’ve asked them, and they are all willing," Bo Ya said excitedly, barely able to speak. Once everyone’s excitement had settled, he happily told Shitou and Lu Yun, "Master, we have something to present to you."

"What is it?"

Watching Yaluo, Sizhi, and Dan Le bring something out from another room, like presenting a treasure, a chest held by one, and something resembling a survival pod carried by two, Shitou and Lu Yun awaited their revelation with interest.

"You’re saying inside are crew training courses and a simulation chamber for spaceship crew operations?"
