Chapter 368: Chapter 356: Transaction (Part 2)
"It was concocted by myself," Lu Yun pondered for a moment before replying.
"Then, can you provide Elixir to us on a long-term basis in the future? We can trade items with you in exchange."
Yaluo looked at Bo Ya, Sizhi, and Dan Le, their faces brightening with joy, clearly delighted with the answer. Already sensing goodwill emanating from the two, they felt confident that their request wouldn’t be refused.
Lu Yun glanced at Shitou, seeking his opinion through eye contact.
Such matters of external negotiation usually bored her; she preferred to let Shitou handle them.
"Concocting Elixirs isn’t easy; it requires a large amount of herbs and a great deal of energy. You ask so urgently – is it because your current stock of Elixirs is running low?" Shitou suddenly interjected.
"Yes."
The faces of Yaluo, Bo Ya, Sizhi, and Dan Le turned pale at his words, which had hit their weak spot, and they could also discern the implications of Shitou’s statement.
They were well aware of the preciousness of Elixirs. Frankly, even if they exhausted all their resources, it might not be enough for a trade, but how could someone on this planet, which had yet to enter the interstellar age, know that? The four became nervous, unsure what kind of price this man would quote next.
"So, what exactly are you prepared to offer us in trade?" Shitou asked again.
"Please wait a moment."
Yaluo and the others stepped aside to discuss in their native language for a few minutes. Then, Yaluo, Sizhi, and Dan Le entered another room and returned each carrying a wooden box as large as a 66L storage container, placing it on the table.
Lu Yun estimated the size of the boxes and marveled at their strength, considering how elderly they appeared, moving at a sluggish pace, yet only slightly out of breath while carrying such large boxes.
Was it because the contents were not heavy?
Before she could finish her guess, the three boxes were opened. Lu Yun and Shitou were momentarily blinded by the brilliance inside. The boxes were filled with pearls and diamonds, casting a sparkling light around the room.
Now, Lu Yun saw the three in a different light. The boxes, filled with such items, had to be hefty. If they were on Earth, and had not used any Medicinal Bath Elixirs, even a strong, young man might struggle to lift them.
"You really are quite strong," Lu Yun remarked with admiration.
Shitou chuckled, his gaze slyly teasing Lu Yun – her sentiment seemed slightly off-target.
"All four of us have taken Gene Elixirs bestowed by our master. If not for Bo Ya’s serious injury limiting his mobility, he alone could carry two such boxes," Yaluo explained.
They stared, baffled by the guard’s audacity to address the Apprentice Pharmacist so irreverently, as if they had entered a fantastical world.
"No wonder," both Lu Yun and Shitou realized. "Are the rest of your tribespeople also using Gene Elixirs?"
"How could that be? Not to mention them, even among our peers from the same generation, few have used the Gene Elixir. We’re running out. The original plan was for our master to concoct more before giving it to us, but then..."
Yaluo’s eyes dimmed. If not for that, their tribe would be much larger by now. "May I ask if we can trade with these? We’d like three, no, just two vials of Elixir for a whole box of pearls and gemstones."
Seeing Lu Yun and Shitou unfazed by the treasures before them, Yaluo and the others felt uncertain. Were pearls and gemstones worthless on this planet?
Yet, when their kin went ashore, they reported that these items were as coveted by the nobles here as they were in interstellar society, weren’t they?
What was going on? Why did these two seem so nonchalant, as if such treasures were nothing out of the ordinary? Could it be because they already had so many, they didn’t need more?
...
Yaluo and the others speculated nervously, their expressions shifting.
"These pearls can be found everywhere at the bottom of the sea; we can get them simply by picking them up. As for diamonds, it seems you’ve stumbled upon a diamond mine, haven’t you? Indeed, at such depths, it’s not easy for ordinary humans on our planet to extensively explore.
Obtaining various gemstones from the seabed is actually not that difficult..."
Shitou casually grabbed pearls and diamonds from the three boxes, examined them, and tossed them back, brushing off his hands. His words filled Yaluo, Bo Ya, Sizhi, and Dan Le with despair.
"Then, can we trade one box for a vial of Elixir?" Yaluo discussed briefly with Bo Ya, Sizhi, and Dan Le in their language before turning to ask Shitou.
"..."
Shitou just smiled, remaining silent.
"Two boxes for one vial," Yaluo glanced at the others who nodded ever so slightly, so she bit the bullet and said.
"..."
Shitou still smiled, without saying a word.
"..."
Desperation flickered in Yaluo’s eyes as she turned hopefully to Lu Yun, expecting the Apprentice Pharmacist, seemingly softer-hearted, to show them some mercy and prevent the relentless demands of her guard.
To her dismay, she realized that the Apprentice Pharmacist seemed quite indulgent of her guard and was enthusiastically observing the scene, silent, and fully delegating the talking.
"Three boxes for one vial... Sir, we really can’t go any lower. It took our people a great deal of time and effort to bring these back. If we go any lower, they’ll spend all their time mining instead of hunting to feed the rest of our tribe," Yaluo pleaded softly to Lu Yun. She still believed that Lu Yun would be more amenable than Shitou.
"I’m not in charge of this decision; it’s up to him to agree," Lu Yun’s heart softened momentarily but then she steeled herself again, pointing at Shitou, "You should discuss it with him instead."
"Ah?"
Yaluo, Bo Ya, Sizhi, and Dan Le stared in shock, mouths agape.
Lu Yun didn’t understand their surprise, "What’s wrong?"
"Isn’t he your guard, miss?" Yaluo stammered the question.
Lu Yun burst into laughter at the revelation, leaning back and forth with mirth.
Shitou got angry on the spot, hugging Lu Yun who was nearly falling over with laughter, and said displeased to Yaluo and the others, "Who told you I’m her guard? We’re husband and wife. She’s my wife."
