Chapter 352: Chapter 340: Diary

The two of them fumbled around for quite some time and, seeing that it was already past seven in the evening, Shitou decided, "Let’s go up for today and continue tomorrow, or else they’re going to worry."

"What should we tell them?" Lu Yun asked Shitou for his opinion.

"Let’s not tell them we’ve already been in. We’ll explain after we’ve figured everything out. Next time we’ll bring more food and water to stay down here for a few days, and just say we found a cave where we can rest."

Shitou looked around; although they had been inside for a considerable amount of time today, they hadn’t actually had the chance to examine in detail.

"Hmm," Lu Yun nodded.

They exited the spaceship, and the seawater outside was no different from during the day, as there wasn’t much distinction between day and night at the depths of ten thousand meters—because even the daylight sun couldn’t penetrate the profound depths of the ocean.

The ascent was much faster than the descent; as the two held hands and finally emerged at the surface, those anxiously waiting on the beach all let out a long sigh of relief.

...

On their second dive, having informed the others in advance, Shitou and Lu Yun brought a large amount of food and water with them and stayed nearly a week inside the cosmic spaceship at the bottom of the sea, figuring out how to operate it.

They also meticulously explored every corner of the spaceship.

It turned out that operating the spaceship wasn’t as difficult as one might think, as all of its functions were automated, controlled by a main system.

This was why there were no people inside the spaceship, yet the protective shield outside was still in operation. It seemed the spaceship’s former owner didn’t like a highly automated central control system; otherwise, such a ship would typically have a brain-like AI coupled with several robots.

Instead, aside from the most basic maintenance and repair robots, and cleaning robots, there were no others.

The energy block reserves on the ship were incredibly plentiful. Apart from those remaining in the spaceship’s storage, Lu Yun had even more in her space. Other resources such as weapons, various materials, and food were also abundant, and they took some of everything that wasn’t available in their own space.

Eventually, the two found the previous owner’s journal and a global mineral distribution map, as well as an even more important interstellar star chart.

After reading the journal, they learned why the former owner of the ship and space had arrived on Earth—it was due to a rare cosmic storm and the sudden appearance of a black hole, which sucked the ship into it and flung it into this "unknown" star system, forcing a crash landing on Earth.

Fortunately, the ship’s defensive capabilities were strong enough to withstand becoming merely damaged rather than disintegrating completely. However, repairing the ship required a wide variety of ores that couldn’t be fulfilled by the existing on-board supply. Thus, the former owner decided to park the spaceship in an area of Earth’s ocean inaccessible to humans and scanned for global mineral distributions to find what was needed.

The journal wasn’t detailed, showing that the previous owner only made entries when feeling extremely depressed; hence the large time gaps between entries. The dates used were according to the Star Calendar, making it quite challenging for Shitou and Lu Yun to convert. They finally realized that over two hundred years had passed since the last entry in the journal.

In the end, the previous owner mentioned in passing that she would pilot a submarine to a deep-sea area in search of a particular ore she needed.

Then, there were no more entries—

"Keep this journal," Shitou, after closing the journal, said to Lu Yun with a wry smile. "It’s probably best not to take it out in public. The emotional outpourings recorded here aren’t really confidential, just personal venting. If we can preserve someone’s privacy, then there’s no need to disclose it. Keep it safe—we might have the chance to return it to her descendants someday."

Lu Yun nodded in agreement, carefully placing the journal in a wooden box for safekeeping.

"The most important thing is the interstellar star chart. Is there a way to copy this?" Shitou asked while looking at the star chart on the screen.

He asked Lu Yun because the star chart was incredibly detailed, covering more than one star system and the file size was immense. With Earth’s current technology, there was no way to copy it fully. Not only was it impossible now, but even technology decades later might not suffice. Hence, they were counting on whether Lu Yun’s space might have such a large-capacity storage device.

"No need to copy, I’ve already got it," Lu Yun said, leading Shitou into her space and into a special audiovisual room. There, she activated a colossal three-dimensional interstellar map that appeared before them, as if they were standing in the midst of infinite space.

Apart from a backup of the star chart, the audiovisual room had detailed backups of the Earth’s mineral distribution map and even more precise annotations.

"Let’s go back to the ship and check if we’ve missed anything else. If not, we should head back up. It’s been so many days, they’re bound to start worrying if we don’t return soon," Shitou said, signaling Lu Yun to leave the space before adding, "We need to go back to Capital City to report our findings. After that, it looks like the task of searching for the previously launched submarine might fall to us."

He furrowed his brow, "We also need to find a way to retrieve the former owner’s remains. I suspect she met with a mishap, otherwise her space wouldn’t have ended up an ownerless entity. We should do our best to search for her, so she’s properly laid to rest. It’s the least we can do in light of the great opportunity she’s given us."

"You’re absolutely right—all of this came about because of her. To drink water and remember its source, we should do what we can to show our gratitude," Lu Yun agreed with Shitou’s sentiments.

Shitou also nodded, his expression growing solemn as if deep in thought.

Finally, Lu Yun broke the silence, "This spaceship has been almost completely repaired. Flying it in space now might be a bit of a strain, but getting it off the ocean floor and onto land is doable. Moreover, the ship has a cloaking device; once activated, not even satellites up in the sky would detect it. What do you think about taking it up there directly?"

The more Lu Yun familiarized herself with the ship over the past few days, the more she marveled at the technological discrepancy. She seriously doubted that even with a model in hand, the country’s current technological capabilities could replicate the spaceship anytime soon.
