Chapter 323: Chapter 313: The Vigor of Jealousy
Under Shitou’s strong intervention, the only things in Lu Yun’s backpack were a one-liter thermos and a towel for wiping sweat. If it hadn’t been for Lu Yun’s insistence, Shitou wouldn’t even have allowed the thermos in her backpack.
After soaking in medicinal baths, Lu Yun’s physical condition wasn’t inferior to the other specially trained members of the group. She followed everyone with ease, walking for over three hours without getting flushed or out of breath, which secretly astonished Su Qiaoling, Wen Shan, Zhan Hongtao, and Zhuang Jun.
"Another wild chicken, making the total count six including this one. And with the seven rabbits, we have enough for both lunch and dinner today."
Zhuang Jun saw Shitou throw another pebble and swiftly ran to pick up a wild chicken, returning with a delighted smile.
"There’s no need to continue hunting if we have enough. I can hear water; there should be a water source not far ahead. It’s the perfect place for us to deal with these wild animals and also prepare our meal," Shitou said earnestly.
The others listened intently and all perked up, hastening their steps. Indeed, a small stream soon appeared before their eyes, with a few trees adorned with vibrant and splendid pink peach blossoms beside it.
Perhaps because this place was seldom visited by humans and never fished, the stream was filled with visibly plump fish leisurely swimming about.
"I’ll go catch a few fish," said Zhuang Jun, eager to give it a try upon seeing them.
"Me too," called out Wen Shan quickly.
The heart of a food lover is the same. Through their time pretending to be a married couple, they discovered they at least shared a common passion for food.
"I’ll go clean these up," volunteered Zhan Hongtao, picking up the game and heading downstream.
Seeing Shitou and Lu Yun, Su Qiaoling smiled knowingly and said, "I’ll go help Zhan Hongtao."
"Looks like it’s just the two of us to gather firewood," Shitou said, pleased with the outcome, and without further ado, took Lu Yun’s hand. "Let’s go."
"Along with gathering firewood, we might as well pick some wild vegetables to make a cold salad," Lu Yun suggested, pointing to the lush Horseshoe grass growing everywhere.
Horseshoe grass, also known as Five Elements Grass, is highly praised in traditional herbal medicine books for its leaves that are green, stems that are red, flowers that are yellow, roots that are white, and seeds that are black—encompassing all the five elements.
It can clear heat from the heart, liver, lungs, and large intestine; improve vision, lower blood lipid levels, and restore greying hair; it can also cool the blood and reduce liver heat. It is a longevity vegetable highly sought after in later generations.
"Sure, should I go and dig up some bird eggs to stir-fry with them?" Shitou asked eagerly, eyeing the abundant Horseshoe grass.
He had no particular fondness for this kind of wild grass with a subpar taste and a bit of sourness, but Xiaoyun seemed to enjoy it quite a bit.
If she liked it, then let her. After all, eating something is just that—eating. He’d treat it as a dish and, when the time came, just close his eyes, shove it in his mouth, chew a few times, and swallow. It wasn’t difficult for him since he wasn’t picky.
Thinking this, a smile appeared on Shitou’s face. Seeing this, Lu Yun thought that Shitou also quite liked this wild vegetable, so she cheerfully said, "You can eat more if you like. It would be great if you can find bird eggs. Besides making a cold dish, stir-frying them with the eggs would taste good, too."
"Yeah, we’ll transplant some more to the space, so whenever you want to eat them, we can just pick some for you, and I can cook them for you often. Ah, why didn’t I think of this before? We should collect more seeds in the future. There’s plenty of room in the space, and the Plant Clan really has a way with plants."
"Okay."
Shitou nodded indifferently, his affectionate smile unbroken by any hints of displeasure, just as if he truly enjoyed those dandelions he used to disdain as weeds.
Lu Yun nodded in satisfaction. One of the things she was most pleased with about Shitou was just this: he was easy to feed. No matter what food she made and offered him, he would accept it, completely un-picky.
This was truly gratifying.
Even for her, who didn’t particularly enjoy cooking, felt profoundly that preparing a meal or frying a dish for him in the kitchen was a very fulfilling task.
As the saying goes: "Work feels lighter when men and women do it together."
By the time Lu Yun and Shitou returned with a large bundle of branches, bird eggs, mushrooms, and a bunch of dandelions, they could smell the tantalizing aroma of food from afar before they even reached the spot.
Close up, they saw that Zhan Hongtao, Su Qiaoling, Wen Shan, and Zhuang Jun had already caught several big fat fish and had processed the game as well.
Aside from the makeshift stove by the creek where a fish soup was simmering, there were also two campfires set up, one roasting whole rabbits skewered on sticks, and the other roasting fish.
On the large rocks by the creek, several rabbit hides had been cleaned and laid out, their shapes intact.
Shitou’s rabbit hunting was always a one-hit kill, with wounds between the eyes of the rabbits, and Zhan Hongtao clearly took care when processing and skinning them.
"You guys are so fast, you’ve got it cooking already. It’s a pity about these rabbit hides though, so intact but no one knows how to tan them."
Lu Yun looked regretfully at the rabbit hides, considering maybe sneaking them away while the others weren’t looking, when Su Qiaoling, smiling at the side, chimed in, "No need to feel regretful, Zhan Hongtao just said he knows how to tan hides, it’s a family skill."
"Really?" Lu Yun looked at Zhan Hongtao with full admiration, surprised and impressed that someone around her possessed such a skill.
"My grandfather used to make his living with this craft, and I learned a few tricks from him when I was little. I just couldn’t resist when I saw these rabbit hides, so I kept them," Zhan Hongtao said with a slightly embarrassed smile.
"That’s really something." Lu Yun was always generous with her smiles and praise for skills she didn’t possess herself, but this smile and praise were enough to make Shitou by her side scowl darkly. The surge in his mood and the sharpness in his gaze caused Zhan Hongtao to break out in a cold sweat, his face contorting into a smile more pained than genuine, as he inwardly lamented, ’Heaven can bear witness, I truly had no intention of flirting with your wife, it was completely accidental, I swear’.
Su Qiaoling, Wen Shan, and Zhuang Jun looked at Zhan Hongtao with unlimited sympathy. After several months of being together, they had a clear understanding of just how jealous Shitou could get.
Especially Su Qiaoling, who, with deep remorse, silently turned her head away—I can’t save you, you’ll have to fend for yourself!
As for Lu Yun, she seemed completely unaware of all this. Her attention had already shifted to the roasted rabbits and fish by the campfire. Seeing that the branches there were already running low, she hurriedly called out to Shitou, "Shitou, quickly bring over those branches and add them on, the fire’s almost out."
