Chapter 320: Chapter 310: Doubt

"Does it really hurt?" Mother Mi immediately let go and leaned in to look, noticing that Old Mi’s ear had indeed started to turn a bit red. She couldn’t help but feel a bit guilty; it had been too long since she had used her strength, and she had lost control of it. Clearly, she needed more practice.

"Next time I’ll be careful," she promised.

"There’s a next time?" Old Mi rubbed his ear and grimaced softly, muttering, "If there’s a next time, wouldn’t that be the end of me?"

"If you behave, there won’t be a next time," Mother Mi comforted, patting Old Mi as she said with a smile.

The speed of her change in expression and her perfunctory tone made Old Mi seriously doubt her words, especially when he couldn’t help but shudder upon hearing Mother Mi hum happily, "Dispel the sunlight to see the sun, how broad the revolutionary road is." He couldn’t help but cry and laugh, thinking that his wife’s choice of singing "Farmers Turn Over, Sing the Song" was indeed quite apt for the situation.

"Hurry up, is there something you still haven’t told me?" Mother Mi hadn’t forgotten her earlier suspicion and didn’t allow Old Mi to gloss over it.

Left with no choice, Old Mi recounted his conversation with Shitou in detail to Mother Mi, then said, "I didn’t actually distrust you before, nor did I dare to disdain you. It’s just that I thought it was better to avoid making a fuss over unnecessary matters. It would only mean one more person worrying for no good reason."

"Comrade Pei’s wife is that impressive? Just from eating our duck once, she could figure out our secret recipe?" Mother Mi’s face became serious, her disbelief evident. To her, such a thing was simply unimaginable.

"My father told me that although rare, there are indeed people in this world who have such a skill. Apparently, our ancestors had encountered such people. Never would I have imagined that I would encounter one too," said Old Mi with a sigh, wondering whether this encounter was a blessing or something else. The encounter that his ancestors had with that remarkable person, and the exact events and outcome, was not passed down to them.

"...Comrade Pei’s wife is a decent person," he added cautiously.

Mother Mi fell silent for a moment and thoughtfully said, "Her family definitely isn’t in need of money. Just look at her spending a lot on our ducks and salted duck eggs. Now she even made special arrangements for us to stay in such a place that obviously isn’t cheap, and she said that her parents are inviting us to dinner tonight—"

Mother Mi calmly began to analyze the situation with Old Mi.

"So if they really intended to steal our recipe, there would be absolutely no need for them to suggest that we come to Capital City. They could have silently let us stay in that remote little county, using our recipe however they wanted in Capital City. We’d be too far away to ever get wind of it, wouldn’t we?"

"Right, how did I not think of that? If they really wanted to, there would indeed be no need to go to such lengths. But now that they know our recipe and still encouraged us to come, what are they really after? Apart from raising ducks and cooking duck meat, there’s nothing special about us that would attract attention," replied Old Mi, his eyes lighting up as he realized the sense in Mother Mi’s words. But soon after, he was puzzled again.

"I can’t figure it out either. Logically, there’s no need to involve us now that they know the recipe. They have the money to find several chefs who can raise ducks and cook duck meat, even better than us. How hard could it be?"

Mother Mi thought for a while, her headache only growing the more she pondered. Eventually, she decided not to think about it anymore. "My mother always used to say ’Heaven helps the simple’, you have a thousand faults, a million shortcomings,

but the fact that you are a sincere person is a good thing. Maybe that’s what they saw in you, your honesty?" she said.

"..." Old Mi was dumbstruck as he looked at Mother Mi, unsure whether her words were a compliment or an insult. How come he was full of faults and shortcomings?

"Guessing is pointless, and what good does it do anyway? Just settle your mind, we’ll know everything tonight."

Big Sister Mi yawned and, with dissatisfaction, told Old Mi across from her, "Go wash up. We need a good nap this afternoon. We’re not young anymore. A journey that’s less than two days has us totally exhausted."

Old Mi looked at Big Sister Mi as she went into the bathroom by herself, and he felt as though snow was starting to float above his head.

But the wronged person is like frost in June, and now that it’s winter, even if the room is as warm as summer, it’s still the dead of winter after all. Could it be that even the heavens don’t think he is wronged in the slightest?

Old Mi sighed dejectedly and followed her into the bathroom. He couldn’t rest easy without checking to make sure his wife knew how to use all the fancy stuff in there.

...

"Xu Liang said the family Xiaoyun has set her sights on seems quite decent," said Lu Aiguo as he watched Xia Yuan busily comparing several pieces of fabric in different designs and thinking about the color matching for the handmade quilt she planned to sew.

He would occasionally offer his opinions, getting quite engrossed in the process.

Handicrafts were a new hobby that Xia Yuan had recently taken up, and her goals were lofty and noble. She planned to have everything ready for when Lu Yun had her baby—she wanted to use clothes and quilts she had sewn with her own hands...

In Xia Yuan’s opinion, even though she was starting from scratch, she still had at least three years to learn, and by then, a few small clothes and trousers wouldn’t be difficult to make, right?

Lu Aiguo supported Xia Yuan’s new hobby and had even reserved the right for himself to have a set of house clothes made by her once she learned how to make them.

For someone with zero basics in handicrafts, starting with making clothes was too difficult, so Xia Yuan’s fabric arts tutor suggested she start with the basics, such as learning color matching for making quilts first.

"Xiaoyun’s judgment can’t be wrong, can it? Are you planning to collaborate, or to bring them into the family?" Xia Yuan casually asked while she chose a color matching scheme and began to stitch by hand. She didn’t actually spend much time on this each day, adding up to just an hour or two at best; it was normal for her not to touch needle and thread for several days when she got busy. She mostly considered it a form of relaxation.

"I would naturally prefer to bring them into the family. Of course, it depends on their own wishes, as I wouldn’t force anyone to do anything they don’t want to," Lu Aiguo said, picking up another needle and skilfully threading it for Xia Yuan and cutting it. The needles that were unknotted were placed conveniently close to Xia Yuan’s hand.

The two of them chatted casually, each in turn.

After helping out many times, Lu Aiguo had learned that the ideal length of thread for a needle was the length of an arm; if the thread was too long, it was prone to knotting or breaking.

There really was something to learn in everything around you.

He watched as Xia Yuan patiently stitched the fabric with even stitches, not finding it boring in the least.
