Chapter 316: Chapter 306: The Secret Passage
"So, to outsiders, I’ll suddenly go from a career woman to a housewife, right?"
Lu Yun sighed, "I’m kind of not looking forward to it now. It was already isolating enough in the deep mountains. Moving to an island, what about all those family members? Stuck on the island without even being able to visit the nearby county town for a few days, I’m really worried about people going crazy with cabin fever."
"Don’t be too pessimistic. Who says you have to be isolated from the world on the island? With so many people there, do you think they’ll skimp on the supply ships?" Shitou found Lu Yun’s worries a bit amusing.
"Right." Lu Yun suddenly realized.
"In fact, I don’t know the details yet, this is all just speculation," Shitou cautioned, worried that Lu Yun took his words seriously.
"I got it, let’s hurry in," she said.
The two showed their IDs to the security staff at the ’Herbal Research Institute Plantation Base’ before entering the building.
Su Qiaoling and Wen Shan had been waiting for a while and came forward to greet them.
The four entered an office on the first floor, closed the door, and Shitou bolted the iron lock behind it. Lu Yun was facing what seemed like an ordinary office.
A simple desk, chairs, a bookcase, a wooden sofa, and a coffee table – beyond that nothing else, who would have thought there was more to it?
Shitou pressed a spot on the bookcase, which silently slid open to the sides, revealing a password-protected door.
Shitou quickly entered the password. Lu Yun used her spiritual power to take a closer look and saw that the password was a full fifty-eight digits long.
"You have to enter the password within a minute without any mistakes, or an alarm will sound at another location," Shitou warned as he pushed open the door, having finished entering the code.
Lu Yun saw that it was an iron door at least fifty centimeters thick.
The four stepped through the iron door, and Shitou pressed a switch on the wall, lighting up the area instantly.
After closing the door, he again secured the iron bolt. Shitou pointed to a computer screen on the side, "Before going out, remember to check this. Every location here with a password-protected door has a two-way mechanical lock. As long as you close the bolt, even someone who remembers the password cannot get in."
"Is this the room’s surveillance monitor? That’s very thoughtful," Lu Yun observed immediately, noticing the screen displayed the situation outside the room, and the bookcase had returned to its original state.
Shitou nodded, showing the three women how to navigate the surveillance footage, "Usually, there should be no problems. The office outside has someone watching. Any anomalies will be communicated directly to you. This is better than nothing, I guess."
"It looks pretty good." Making such improvements in such a short time was impressive. Lu Yun assessed the rather cramped space and the staircase descending underground.
After descending a dozen or so steps with the group and turning a corner to continue forward for about ten minutes, there was another door. Shitou entered the password again, and after opening it, they were greeted by a spacious suite.
Before leaving the tunnel, Shitou pressed another switch on the wall, and the lights in the tunnel went out all at once.
"Not bad, but we didn’t have to go upstairs. Is this suite underground?" Lu Yun was slightly displeased.
"There’s an emergency exit that goes straight to my office. Be patient, this is just temporary," Shitou said placatingly, noticing Lu Yun’s mood. He led them through another hidden door, up a flight of stairs, and through yet another two-way locked door to emerge from a wardrobe into a small rest room with a single bed.
The rest room led directly to Shitou’s office.
After touring Shitou’s office, the group returned to the suite below.
A walk around the area revealed that the place was quite large, with the size of two kitchens, two bathrooms, and beyond Lu Yun’s suite there were other rooms designated for guards’ rest and a workout room.
Shitou repeated the passwords of each door to the three women, then addressed Su Qiaoling and Wen Shan, "Zhan Hongtao and Zhuang Jun will rotate in bringing in food and cleaning the trash. For emergencies, there’s a direct line you can dial."
Su Qiaoling and Wen Shan nodded, "Understood."
Shitou put away his stern face and smilingly suggested to Lu Yun, "How about I spend the morning here with you today to get you familiar with the environment?"
"You should go out. There’s not much here to get used to. And do you really have that much free time?" Lu Yun immediately dismissed Shitou’s proposal, looking at him skeptically.
Although Shitou’s office was right above, he clearly couldn’t go directly up and had to return the same way, leaving the ’Herbal Research Institute Plantation Base’ first.
"Alright, I guess I can’t even be lazy for half a day," Shitou lamented, prompting a laugh from Lu Yun. Su Qiaoling and Wen Shan quickly lowered their heads, practicing mindfulness.
After escorting Shitou out, the three returned to the secret passage. For safety’s sake, they each took turns trying the combination lock. Back in the suite, they found the air circulation was surprisingly good, despite being underground.
"It’s incredible that such a secret room was built in such a short time," Lu Yun marveled.
"It really is incredible," Su Qiaoling and Wen Shan agreed, "That’s why they say expertise can be found in every profession."
If Shitou were present to hear their praise, he would have laughed heartily. The reason this place was chosen as a temporary residence was precisely because there was an existing secret room to modify.
Otherwise, with only a month’s time and the need for secrecy, it would have been impossible to achieve this level of work.
--
In Capital City, at the train station.
"Mom and Dad, look, those are the people coming to meet us," said the youngest.
Getting off the train and seeing the strange place, bustling with an endless stream of people, the Laomi family of four with their luggage began to feel apprehensive.
Getting off the train, the platform was much larger than they had expected, not at all comparable to the small station in their county town. The crowded streams of people nearly scattered the family on their very first encounter.
The four discussed briefly and decided to follow the crowd and leave the area first. But before they even made it to the exit, Wu Jia, with sharp eyes, spotted a middle-aged man holding a sign that read ’Laomi Duck Restaurant.’
"Laomi Duck Restaurant--"
Wu Jia’s shout brought everyone’s attention to the sign, and they all became excited, pushing their way toward the middle-aged man holding it.
The man with the sign noticed them too, "Are you Master Laomi’s family?"
"Yes, yes, yes, are you Comrade Pei’s father-in-law?" Mi Erhu nodded excitedly.
"No," the man quickly shook his head.
