Chapter 308: Chapter 298: Eliminating Future Troubles
The village secretary remained silent for a moment before speaking. "Alright, I have to support you in this."
"I support you too."
"And me."
"And me."
...
"Count me in as well," Uncle Mi was the last to express his stance, sighing, "It’s really rare to see someone with such a cruel heart."
"Thank you all for understanding and supporting me, thank you. I’m going to apply to the court to sever my father-son relationship with them. I don’t even want compensation for the expenses I incurred raising Mi Dahu, the cost of his wedding, and the support of his son. I just want to have nothing to do with them from now on."
Old Mi wiped away his tears, resolutely stating, "I was still thinking about leaving them some money and property even after cutting ties with them, but now it seems completely unnecessary."
"Ah, you’re just too kind-hearted," Uncle Mi patted Old Mi’s shoulder.
"Now, I too will harden my heart for once, but even then I can’t bring myself to leave them with no way out. In the end, we are father and son, and I state here in front of all of you that I will give them the old family house so they at least have a place to settle in. They have three days to move out. As for the household items that they’re not currently using, besides their own, I hope you all can continue to be witnesses when the time comes and I’ll give those to them as well, but no money."
Old Mi paused, then looked at Yang Yu and her son with a touch of sarcasm as he spoke.
"In fact, with or without the money, they won’t be short of cash. When I started this shop, the two of them took their share in secret from the daily earnings in front. They also insisted on taking away half every month under various pretexts; if we didn’t give in, they’d make endless trouble."
As Old Mi spoke, he began to feel a growing hatred for his own naivety and vanity. The situation with Mi Dahu’s family had come to this, and he shared the blame for indulging them. If he hadn’t feared gossip and cared too much about saving face, perhaps they wouldn’t have ended up like this. He hoped it wasn’t too late now.
A person should live life in a way that makes them happy. Why care too much about what others think or do? Having realized this, Old Mi was finally able to let go of every last scrap of his concern for face.
"I used to think that family scandals should not be publicized; I didn’t tell anyone, thinking that would avoid such an ending. Who knows, perhaps the money they have is even more than what my wife, Erhu, and I have combined."
"No way, that old house is too dilapidated to live in! Besides, that’s not fair. If you split us off, how will we survive in the future? Even if you don’t give us anything else, at the very least, you have to give us a copy of the recipe," Yang Yu blurted out hastily without thinking.
"You two old fools, believe it or not, I’ll go straight to slaughter you tonight."
Still under the influence of the "Truth Serum," Mi Kang couldn’t help but continue to reveal his true thoughts whenever he opened his mouth.
"Mi Kang, don’t think nobody can deal with you. To kill is to pay with your life; do you want to be shot? Believe it or not, I’ll call the police to take you away right now!" the village secretary shouted.
The others glared at Yang Yu and her son as if looking at fools.
One eschewing the family recipe, the other plotting murder?
It’s still best to keep such people at a distance in the future.
"My life is so hard..." Yang Yu plopped down and started slapping her thigh, a trick that had worked wonders nearly every time, so she used it now without a second thought.
Unfortunately, what she hadn’t anticipated was that today her previously infallible "ultimate move" no longer worked. Without Mi Dahu’s cooperation and everyone else’s tolerance, she wailed for a long time to no avail; not only did no one step forward to console or pull her away, but they even moved aside, too lazy to spare her a glance, and started chatting among themselves.
In various villages and towns, such shrewish women are all too common; the best approach is to ignore them entirely, much less fawn over them, right?
Although this is the county town, it’s just a small county town. It might be larger than the villages, but many of these villages had previously relocated from deep in the mountains. Even today, every family still has some land to cultivate.
Among those who came today were village chiefs, but when we say village chiefs, these were the elders recognized from the olden days in their villages, and it was customary to call them in to help mediate in times of trouble.
Yang Yu, frustrated at getting no results from her wailing and seeing the onlookers move away, turned red with rage, yet she dared not continue causing trouble upon realizing her side was outnumbered and outmatched; she refrained from unleashing her head-butt signature move.
On the side, Mi Kang watched his mother with disdain. His earlier declaration about killing someone had sounded impressive, but his bravado had deflated like a pricked balloon as soon as the village chief intimidated him. Now, seeing his mother carrying on like this, he couldn’t help but mutter resentfully, "Why are you so useless?"
Yang Yu stiffened, then began to wail anew. This time it was genuine sorrow, and tears began to fall—it was not just for show.
"Enough, enough, no one’s watching you cry. Why bother?" Mi Kang kicked her and growled impatiently.
...
"Oh no, this has gone too far; that boy is truly intent on killing someone. Even a cornered dog will leap over a wall, and he’s like a ticking time bomb. We can’t let him actually make a move—if the Mi Family really suffers, I’d feel guilty for the rest of my life."
Lu Yun hurriedly conveyed this to Shitou through a whisper.
"This can be easily solved. I’ll just cripple his limbs behind the scenes. Not completely, just enough to ensure he won’t be able to exert any strength in the future," Shitou pondered and said after a moment’s thought.
"If you’re going to act, don’t be soft-hearted—just deal with all three of them in one go. I reckon Mi Dahu won’t get too long a sentence, so we can’t wait for him to come out and seek revenge later. There’s only so long one can play the thief; there’s no such thing as an eternal guard against one," Lu Yun said resolutely, thinking that it would be a waste to pity people like Mi Dahu’s family. Better to nip any potential future discontent and vengeful thoughts in the bud than risk them harming innocent people later on.
"As long as we leave them able to walk and with strength enough to lift a bowl, they’ll survive. If they’re willing to work, even if they can’t farm, they could raise some chickens or ducks. They wouldn’t starve. And if worst comes to worst, we can secretly assist them in getting welfare assistance to ensure they don’t go hungry," she continued.
"Don’t worry," Shitou nodded.
"We should still try to persuade Old Master Mi and his family later. It would be even better if they’re willing to leave this place," Lu Yun suggested with a small smile.
"If they agree to collaborate with the Lu Group, their future prospects would certainly be broader than staying in this small place. In fact, I value their character much more than their secret duck recipe; I can pretty much guess the ingredients." She didn’t mention that she’d already deduced most of their secret recipe by taste alone.
With additional herbs, she could even improve the flavor, texture, and nutrition of the specialty ducks.
