Chapter 301: Chapter 291: On the Right Path

Lu Yun watched Shitou with a sly smile and finally set aside her playful spirit to earnestly taste the meal in front of her. While eating, she casually struck up a conversation with Su Qiaoling and Wen Shan, chatting idly.

Su Qiaoling and Wen Shan were naturally very cooperative, and soon the three of them were laughing and talking as if nothing had happened before.

Shitou was very satisfied with their "getting on board."

After finishing their meal and settling the bill, the four were led to the backyard by a young daughter-in-law who had been called over by that woman.

Lu Yun, with her sharp ears, heard the woman shout, "Wu Jia," towards the door leading to the inner yard.

Sure enough, the young daughter-in-law called "Wu Jia" appeared shortly after.

Although this county town was small, each shop on this street was generally quite large, and nearly every shop had a storefront with a yard in the back.

There was plenty of land, and the living spaces were large and comfortable—something that people living in the city couldn’t compare with.

"Please take a seat for a moment and have a cup of tea while waiting. It’s really the busiest time for business right now, and my father-in-law and my brother and sister-in-law are still too busy to spare a moment."

Leading the four to a room in the backyard, Wu Jia, with her easy grace, brought them a pot of tea and poured a cup for each person.

Her smile was contagious. The twenty-two or three-year-old daughter-in-law wasn’t particularly pretty, but her constant smile gave her a very comfortable and approachable air.

She was dressed in a clean and neatly kept floral cotton jacket, which looked much nicer than the woman in her forties outside.

It was quite odd; why would someone suited for serving food in the front be helping with the dishes in the kitchen instead?

Indeed, this young woman was the same one Lu Yun had seen washing dishes using her spiritual power. At first, Lu Yun hadn’t thought their arrangement was too strange, but now face to face, it seemed quite obvious.

"Is that woman outside your sister-in-law?" Lu Yun asked, surprised. Geez, with such an age gap, she had assumed they were mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. So they were sisters-in-law?

"Yes, my parents-in-law had my husband when they were over forty." It was a fact discernible to anyone with eyes, so there was no need for Wu Jia to hide it.

"Could it be that your husband’s brother and his wife are not your parents-in-law’s biological children?" Lu Yun’s curiosity was burning fiercely, and somehow she blurted out this guess.

"How did you know? They are indeed adopted by my parents-in-law. But my parents-in-law always treat them as if they were their own," Wu Jia shook her head, "please make yourselves comfortable; I have to go help out, or they won’t be able to manage. It should be no more than half an hour now."

"Then you should hurry to your work," Lu Yun said politely, but inside she couldn’t help feeling tremendously regretful. She watched Wu Jia walk away, feeling as if she was being scratched up by a cat.

Watching from the side, Shitou found the whole situation extremely funny, "Since when did you start discussing such personal matters upon first meeting someone? I haven’t seen you being so gossipy before."

"Being gossipy occasionally can be a way to relieve stress, right? I guessed it as soon as she said it. Didn’t you notice that she didn’t use the word ’also’ when she said ’my parents-in-law had my husband when they were over forty.’? It’s a shame the conversation got cut off halfway; it’s so frustrating," replied Lu Yun, proudly giving herself a pat on the back before becoming somewhat dejected. Knowing only half of something was even worse than not knowing at all she felt.

Unable to resist, she extended her spiritual power towards Wu Jia to see the other three just focused on their work. They only asked simply if the four guests had come in to sit down and have tea, and nothing more was discussed.

The younger chef had taken over the cooking, with the elder supervising. The young chef wanted to talk more with his wife but was interrupted and scolded by the elder, saying that such a habit wasn’t good—the spittle could splash, and if he got used to it, it would be a big mistake to cook for the customers like that...

What a strong, conscientious excuse.

Lu Yun looked at the young man who secretly made a face at his wife and then obediently and quietly shut up. His wife also quietly pursed her lips and smiled, following suit in not speaking anymore.

They looked very loving, huh, at least it seems this couple’s relationship isn’t too bad.

Lu Yun generally had a very good impression of couples who seemed to be in a loving relationship.

She extended her spiritual power again to survey the restaurant, and that’s when her face turned dark.

Although there were still quite a few people eating, no new customers were coming in. Everyone’s dishes had been served, so the woman was idle. She was taking advantage of the lull to sort through the change she had collected on her person.

As she sorted, she glanced towards the door that led to the backyard and then, with a speed that didn’t give away her intention, snatched a few ten-yuan bills and deftly shoved them into the little pocket of her waistband.

The proficiency of her movements showed that this was clearly not her first time doing this.

The man was no different, although he seemed a bit more cautious. After looking around, he sneakily slipped a ten-yuan bill into his own pocket behind his wife’s back, then acted as if nothing had happened.

Lu Yun retracted her spiritual power and silently messaged Shitou, "You were right."

"What did you see?" Shitou raised an eyebrow.

"Nothing but a pair of ingrates." Lu Yun relayed what she had just witnessed, indignantly repeating the story of the adoptive couple stealing money, and then drew that conclusion.

"Human nature isn’t something that can be easily explained." Shitou shook his head with a bitter smile.

Here these two went again with their "sign language," Su Qiaoling and Wen Shan exchanged a look and, as if in agreement, turned their heads in another direction, pretending to be engrossed in looking at something—

Lu Yun glanced over and was speechless. She almost wanted to say to them, ’Change your spot, look where you’re staring, it’s so bare not even a blade of grass is growing.’

"It’s all your fault, it’s too much, look what you’ve done to them?" Lu Yun messaged Shitou, only to receive an innocent look from him.

"Never mind, I can’t entirely blame you."

Feeling tender towards her own man, Lu Yun softened at Shitou’s look and couldn’t bring herself to keep blaming him—not that she really blamed him in the first place.

"Sorry to keep you waiting."

Unbeknownst to them, the customers outside had all left, and the door of the restaurant was temporarily closed up. The five people inside had all gathered together.

"No worries, it’s not often we encounter such unique delicacies, so waiting is nothing. Why don’t you have dinner first? It’s getting late." Shitou offered politely with a smile.

"No problem, we’re used to it, and besides, we’ve had some snacks around ten, so we’re not hungry. My surname is Mi, everyone calls me Old Mi, you can call me that too."

The elder known as Old Mi said this and then hesitantly glanced at Shitou and the others, uncertainly asking, "I don’t know if the customer who talked to my eldest daughter-in-law earlier about buying all of our salted duck eggs was joking or not?"
