Chapter 300: Chapter 290: Drawbacks
Lu Yun, Shitou, Su Qiaoling, and Wen Shan looked up to see the speaker was a woman in her forties, holding a tray with two dishes on it, and also carrying another plate as she placed it on the table in front of the four people.
Lu Yun noticed the woman’s sleeves, stained with grease, which seemed out of place in the surrounding environment, and frowned almost imperceptibly.
Shitou also took notice and began to feel a bit of displeasure towards the person in front of them.
"You must be family members from a big organization around here, right? Although this young man isn’t wearing a uniform, you can tell at a glance that he’s from a big organization."
The woman was oblivious to Shitou and Lu Yun’s displeasure and continued to speak cheerfully as she set down the plate of food.
"Our ducks here in this county are unmatched, those who have tried them once are sure to come back for more. Our ducks are raised at home, and the feeding methods follow ancestral traditions. Even the old Emperor liked them. Why don’t you try my salted duck eggs? Take some with you when you leave. That you can take away, and once you taste them, you’re guaranteed to never forget that flavor, delicious and nourishing."
"Then bring up two salted duck eggs for us to try," said Lu Yun as she scooped up some soup with her spoon for a taste, and nodded.
"Wait a moment, they’ll be right up," the woman replied with a happy laugh, delivered the tray of food to another table, and then gave instructions to the counter.
The salted duck eggs were quickly served.
Just the sight of them was enough to catch one’s attention. Glistening with oil, the salted duck eggs were neatly sliced into eight uniform wedges arranged like a flower, with stems and leaves made from vegetables beneath, and a small butterfly carved from a radish placed at the upper right of the ’flower.’
Lu Yun picked up a wedge of "petal" and took a bite. Even though she had tasted many delicacies before, she couldn’t help but nod in approval as she savored the salted duck egg.
The saltiness of the egg was just right, neither too bland nor overly salted. Since the ducks had been fed herbs from a young age, the eggs inevitably acquired a distinct flavor, and naturally, the taste was uniquely delightful.
Plus this attention to detail.
Lu Yun re-evaluated the dishes on the table and then looked at other tables to find that nearly every dish was plated with care...
A sense of admiration for talent spontaneously arose within her.
"How about that? The taste isn’t bad, right? Want to take some home?"
The woman had stayed nearby, seemingly convinced that Lu Yun was the decision-maker, so she stood at the side watching Lu Yun’s satisfied expression after tasting and couldn’t help feeling proud.
"How many of these salted duck eggs do you have?"
Lu Yun, impressed by the woman’s persistent selling spirit, asked.
"What, are you going to buy them all?" The woman laughed, "We have over a dozen jars in the backyard, each with at least three to four hundred eggs. That’s more than enough for you to buy."
Even if there were twenty jars of salted duck eggs, with four hundred in each, that would only tally up to eight thousand in total.
"I’ll take them all. Today we’ll start by taking a few hundred back with us, and tomorrow we’ll send someone to pick up the rest." Lu Yun looked calmly at the woman, whose face showed shock, "You work out exactly how many there are, oh, and are you selling the ducks, too?"
"Are you serious? You’re not joking?" the woman asked after swallowing hard for confirmation.
"Of course." Lu Yun smiled but rolled her eyes inwardly, wondering why she would waste her breath joking with someone she wasn’t close to.
"Just wait, I’ll go ask our old man." The woman gave a quick glance at the other three people and, seeing no one objecting to the young girl’s decision, knew she hadn’t misjudged; this girl had the authority. She happily trotted off towards the kitchen.
"Shitou, I was thinking, since you’ve just been promoted, why not treat everyone to a meal? It’s just, I’m not sure if it’s possible to invite people from outside to the research institute to whip up a couple of dishes." As soon as the woman left, Lu Yun immediately checked with Shitou.
The duck’s flavor was truly unique and sparked the idea of having Shitou’s colleagues try this delicacy. If it was possible to invite the restaurant’s chef to the research institute’s cafeteria to cook for everyone, that would be great. If not, ordering some roast duck or braised duck to add to the meal was also a nice option.
"No problem," Shitou agreed without hesitation.
"Mm, now I’m reassured." Seeing how decisively Shitou nodded, Lu Yun felt completely at ease.
"Our old man invites you to talk in detail after your meal," the woman returned after a while and told Lu Yun’s group enthusiastically.
"All right," Lu Yun agreed on behalf of the group.
"This place keeps a good level of cleanliness, quite meticulous. I think inviting people to Lu Family or hiring them for a collaboration, to expand and promote this flavor, would likely be popular. If they’re not willing to leave here, perhaps purchasing the recipe is also a good idea."
Lu Yun used telepathy to share her thoughts with Shitou, and briefed him on the kitchen’s situation, before concluding with a laugh, "It’s so odd, they pay so much attention to the cleanliness behind the scenes, but the front-of-house staff don’t seem to care as much about their personal hygiene, right?"
"The ones in charge here probably can’t control everyone; when they’re not united at heart, they can fake it on the surface, but there are bound to be disagreements behind the scenes. But this is normal; it’s the same weak point in most family businesses and workshops."
Shitou also communicated with Lu Yun using telepathy.
"You have a point, conflicts among people are inevitable, after all. Ones like us, who don’t fuss over gains and losses, are rare," Lu Yun said after a moment of silence.
"That’s because my ambitions lie with the research institute. Plus, we’ve been through a lot together, and that’s why we can manage this. If I had stayed with Lu Group, it’s hard to say whether my thoughts would have shifted towards seeking power and profit," Shitou said with a smile at Lu Yun.
"You’re refreshingly honest, ’To hold sovereign power while awake, to drink and recline in the beauty’s arms while drunk.’ All the world’s crows, or perhaps I should say all the world’s men, are equally black," Lu Yun said, giving Shitou a look before bursting into laughter. She picked up and offered him a roast duck leg, telepathically saying, "For your honesty, I reward you."
"Thank you, Empress, for your generous gift," Shitou laughed heartily as he picked up the duck leg and started nibbling away at it, reciprocating with a line.
"You’re dismissed, with thanks," Lu Yun raised her eyebrows and telepathically spoke in an imperiously gracious voice.
The two of them had fun with their private banter, and it was difficult to keep their expressions from giving them away, eliciting curious looks from Su Qiaoling and Wen Shan.
In the end, it was Shitou who put on a serious face, releasing an almost imperceptible pressure that made them lower their heads and not dare to look anymore, focusing on eating heartily instead.
