Chapter 299: Chapter 289: Laomi Duck Restaurant
Shitou’s assigned vehicle was an off-road jeep, and he was accustomed to driving himself. He dismissed the driver immediately, not bringing anyone with him except for Lu Yun, Wen Shan, and Su Qiaoling.
Naturally, Lu Yun sat in the passenger seat while Wen Shan and Su Qiaoling took the back seats.
"Ah, with such a small car, even if we wanted to buy a cabinet or some other furniture, we couldn’t bring it back. It would be great if we could take a truck."
As soon as she got in the car, Lu Yun lamented, "I was even thinking of going to the county city today to see if I could buy some furniture. Our living room is so empty, we should at least get a sofa set and a cabinet, right? Besides our room, Wen Shan and Qiaoling’s dorms probably don’t have furniture either."
"That place is called a county city, but it’s pretty much the same as our old home’s countryside. Even if there is furniture for sale, you might not find anything to your taste." Sensing Lu Yun’s frustration, Shitou chuckled.
"There won’t be anything I can’t accept. If there is any, we’ll just buy it and make do. Whether it looks good or not, practicality is what matters. We won’t be using it for too long anyway, when we move to the new location, we can arrange to have furniture sent over from Capital City in advance."
Lu Yun counted on her fingers.
"We also need to buy electrical cords and sockets; the kitchen needs sockets, or the induction cooker and rice cooker will just be ornaments. Having to take them to the living room every time is too much of a hassle.
Buy extra so Wen Shan and Su Qiaoling’s dorm can have them installed too. When you have time, call Mom and Dad and ask them to send two more induction cookers and rice cookers. Ah, I didn’t think this through before; it wouldn’t have been trouble if we’d brought them ourselves."
"There’s no need for such troublesome shipping; we don’t have to wait until the new location either. The logistics department’s transport vehicles make regular trips, so just have Mom and Dad give the things to Grandpa. Tell me what furniture you need, and I’ll let them know. When the time comes, Grandpa can arrange for a vehicle to bring everything over, and if there is anything else you need, you can let me know."
"But including furniture, that would require at least an entire truck..." Lu Yun looked at Shitou with concern.
"It’s not a big deal; it won’t be a problem," Shitou shook his head.
If it wouldn’t be a problem, then it wouldn’t be a problem.
Lu Yun didn’t dwell on this topic and switched to talking about other things.
The scenery outside the window was mostly trees, but thankfully the road was well-maintained, and they didn’t feel any bumps.
Without realizing it, over two hours passed, and they had arrived at the county city. After driving around, Shitou finally parked the car in front of the county government building, communicated with the gatekeeper, and was allowed to park inside.
Upon exiting the car, Lu Yun and the others immediately saw the institute’s shuttle bus parked in the large courtyard of the county government. The shuttle was easily recognizable, its tall, tourist-bus-like silhouette was unique in this small county city.
As expected, the county city wasn’t big; the most bustling area was just one street block. While the goods for sale were comprehensive, each type was expensive and lacked variety, leaving little room for choice. However, there were quite a few vendors selling vegetables, and the prices weren’t too high.
After wandering around casually, once the novelty wore off, Lu Yun began to lose interest.
"It’s about time to eat. After we’re done, if you don’t want to hang around anymore, we can go back. Next time, I’ll take you for a picnic," Shitou said, patting Lu Yun’s head to console her as he noted her lack of enthusiasm.
Indeed, there wasn’t much to see in this place. The items in the shops weren’t appealing to them, no wonder Lu Yun wasn’t interested.
"A picnic? Are there any sources of water nearby, or places with nice scenery?" Lu Yun’s spirits instantly lifted, and she became interested.
"Of course, there’s plenty, this mountain is huge, and there’s still quite a bit of wildlife in the deep woods, but that requires going further in, and it’s impossible to do there and back in one day. At least two days are needed," Shitou said with a laugh.
"Ah-- next time you’re free, let’s go, I haven’t experienced camping outdoors in a long time," Lu Yun said, unintentionally adopting a coquettish tone as she shook Shitou’s arm.
"Alright, alright, I promise you. Stop shaking, we’re both grown-ups now, don’t make us a laughingstock."
Despite his words, the expression on Shitou’s face clearly betrayed that he was speaking against his true feelings; he was at that moment relishing the forethought he had to dress casually before heading out. If he had worn his work uniform as before without any care for his appearance, what would that look like? Maybe Lu Yun would even dislike it, and he’d lose the benefit of walking arm in arm with her.
From now on, whenever he went out with Xiaoyun, Shitou secretly decided he must dress in casual clothes.
"What shall we eat?" Lu Yun looked around, feeling she couldn’t hold much expectation.
"They say there’s a restaurant nearby that does duck quite well, called Laomi Duck Restaurant."
"Pfft, a duck restaurant?" Lu Yun was just opening her thermos to drink water when she heard this and, facing in Shitou’s direction, couldn’t help but spurt out a mouthful of water, which Shitou dodged with a reflexive sidestep.
"Right. It’s said that their ancestors even served as Imperial Chefs, specially making ducks for the Emperor, and they have their own set of secret recipes for duck. From the very start of raising ducklings, their feeding method is different from others’," Shitou recounted the information he had gathered for Lu Yun.
"Then what are we waiting for? Let’s hurry and give it a try," Lu Yun said, full of anticipation, with Wen Shan, who was by her side, nodding her head in agreement.
Laomi Duck Restaurant.
Upon entering, Lu Yun was pleased with the place to a certain extent—the restaurant was quite spacious, crowded with people, and most importantly, it was very clean. Curious, Lu Yun wanted to see what their kitchen was like, so she extended her spiritual power to check it out.
With this look, she became even more satisfied.
Let’s not mention whether the restaurant owner’s ancestors were truly Imperial Chefs; based solely on their "conscientiousness," even in the unseen places where outsiders couldn’t easily see, the hygiene was maintained even cleaner than the dining area, she had to give them a thumbs up.
If she hadn’t seen it with her own eyes, Lu Yun would hardly believe that in such a small county, there would be such a "serious" restaurant—she saw no disinfecting cabinet for the dishes, which wasn’t surprising at this time in a small county.
But Lu Yun saw that every plate, bowl, and chopstick that was brought in was washed at least three times by a young daughter-in-law, who was carefully cleaning them before they were all put into a big pot and boiled...
This scene moved Lu Yun.
Looking further, in the kitchen, a man in his sixties was in charge of cooking, and by his side stood a young man in his twenties, receiving guidance from his grandfather.
Lu Yun took a special look—both of them were very clean, not greasy like the usual chefs, even the creases in their nails were fresh and tidy.
"This restaurant is good."
After they sat down and ordered, the food was served, and Lu Yun tasted a piece of the dry bamboo shoot duck that they ordered for their table. She nodded and said, "This duck has a very distinctive flavor, and it’s quite nourishing. It must be because the ducks have been fed some kind of herbal medicine from a young age."
"What a sharp tongue you have, young lady, to discern that so quickly. You look unfamiliar here—is this your first time visiting our restaurant to eat?"
