Chapter 292: Chapter 282: The Knock on the Door Has a Secret Code
Upon reaching the third floor, they unlocked the door and were greeted by a wave of warm air the moment they entered the room, so both of them removed their coats and draped them over the back of the chairs.
Lu Yun suddenly said to Wen Shan quite seriously, "From now on, you can drop the formal ’you’ when addressing me. Just use ’you’; otherwise, it sounds weird and uncomfortable if others hear it."
"Okay, I’ll do as you say, I’ll inform them," Wen Shan replied promptly after taking a glance at Lu Yun and realizing she was serious. She then rolled up her sleeves and began to wash the lunch boxes in the kitchen.
She thought it would be best to accommodate Lu Yun’s minor requests in the future to avoid upsetting her and triggering an emotional reaction.
Lu Yun had no idea that, after just one day of close contact, she had already been labeled "emotional" by the two guards beside her and for a long stretch of time was carefully and rigorously shielded by their over-cautiousness.
Much later, after the three became very close, almost like best "girlfriends" who could talk about anything, they brought up the subject casually. Lu Yun, utterly surprised, didn’t know what to say and then burst into a fit of laughter.
At the moment, Lu Yun watched Wen Shan enter the kitchen and followed suit, bringing the bag of cutlery to the kitchen and placing it on the countertop.
It was only then that she took a close look at the dormitory’s kitchen.
The stove in the kitchen was a small firewood stove, covered from top to bottom in white ceramic tiles; thanks to the recent cleaning, it shone with an ivory luster that was quite pleasing to the eye.
Next to the stove were the countertop, the sink for washing vegetables, and the water storage tank. Opposite these, there was a row of cabinets made entirely of brick and stone, all of them lined with white ceramic tiles.
The kitchen had good lighting—there was a large sliding glass window above the sink area with a small windowsill. Outside the windowsill was a security grid made of iron bars as thick as fingers.
"The kitchen’s not bad, but what do we do without any power sockets?"
Lu Yun opened the bag and pulled out an induction cooker, "This induction cooker won’t work without a socket, but fortunately, there are sockets in the living room. Tonight, we’ll rely on it to cook hot pot."
While speaking, Lu Yun began to arrange everything neatly, "We should really install a power socket in this kitchen. Otherwise, we can’t always be moving these rice cookers and induction cookers to the living room to cook, right?"
"That’s not difficult, simple electrical work is something Qiaoling and I can handle," Wen Shan took a glance at the induction cooker, "But is this device reliable?"
"It’s quite good; these were all developed by Lu Group and have undergone repetitive testing," Lu Yun answered confidently.
These induction cookers were adapted from the ones in her space, and then they had people mimic the designs to "research" the products. They were incomparable to the hundred or so brands that had appeared domestically at that time, which, without exception, all failed in their previous lives.
"Oh," Wen Shan nodded in realization.
"How do I feel that nothing seems to stump you guys? You’re really amazing, even knowing electrical work," Lu Yun said somewhat speechlessly. Were the two by her side really just guards? It felt as if they knew everything, like they were all-rounders?
"It’s good to learn a variety of skills—they don’t weigh you down, and you never know when one might save your life," Wen Shan replied with a light smile, repeating what their instructor had once said.
"Makes sense."
Lu Yun nodded in agreement. Wen Shan quickly finished washing the lunch boxes and also helped Lu Yun put everything in order. Only then did she realize that Lu Yun’s bag was extremely spacious, containing frying pans, soup pots, all sorts of spoons, bowls, plates, chopsticks, strainers... everything was there.
And there was more; the bag was cleverly packed with a variety of condiments: peanut oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, green onions, ginger, garlic...
Staring at the surprisingly large bag full of garlic, Wen Shan was a bit taken aback, "How long is it gonna take to eat all these garlic bulbs? If they sprout, wouldn’t that be a waste?"
"We want them to sprout, soon we’ll break them off, then string them up and shape them to grow in water. In winter, they can purify the air indoors, and once they’ve grown enough, we can cut them and stir-fry them to eat."
Lu Yun laughed proudly at her own idea, "Besides garlic, I’ve also brought plenty of mung beans, soybeans, and peanuts. Shitou has already put those bags in the bedroom, I’ll sort them out later. That way, we can also enjoy different sprouts to eat, which will be nice.
Oh, and there are some fresh vegetables and fruits too, they just arrived this morning from the south, but it’s a pity we couldn’t bring too much over."
"What we have is already quite impressive." Wen Shan’s eyes twinkled, remembering how everyone helped to carry the assorted bags today, "Do you need Xiu Ling and me to stay and help sort everything out?"
"No need, I can handle it by myself." Lu Yun declined outright, jokingly thinking to herself, how would she be able to "cheat" if she let these two, who possibly had great memories, help with the sorting?
"I’m used to taking my time with organizing things by myself," Lu Yun added.
"Ok then." Wen Shan’s gaze returned to the garlic, curious, "How do you string these with a rope? Can they still sprout after you string them?"
"You use a needle and thread, being careful to avoid the sprout in the middle. Garlic cloves also grow faster when peeled and soaked in water," Lu Yun said, proudly sharing her experience.
As they were talking, a knock sounded at the door.
"They’re back already, how come so soon?" Lu Yun wondered.
"It’s not Xiu Ling." Wen Shan shook her head after listening to the knock.
"Eh, you can even tell that?" Lu Yun looked at her in surprise.
"If it were us, there would be a fixed rhythm to the knocking. You stay in the kitchen; I’ll go open the door," explained Wen Shan.
"Oh." There’s even a secret knock?
Lu Yun chuckled and stood at the kitchen door watching Wen Shan go to open the door. Sure enough, it wasn’t Xiu Ling outside but two very young uniformed staff members, one carrying two bags of rice and the other with a bulging burlap sack over his shoulder and half a pig’s carcass in his hand.
"Hello, may I ask if you are Vice Chancellor Pei’s spouse?" asked the staff member carrying the rice bags very politely.
"No, but this is indeed Vice Chancellor Pei’s residence. Please come in, you can put the goods directly in the kitchen," Wen Shan nodded and stepped aside.
"All right."
The two staff members entered as instructed and were slightly taken aback to see Lu Yun.
"This lady is Vice Chancellor Pei’s spouse; I live downstairs and came up to help. Are you from the logistics department?" Wen Shan casually introduced Lu Yun and then inquired.
"Hello."
Both staff members greeted Lu Yun in unison, then nodded and answered, "Yes."
"Put the things down here, thank you for taking the trouble to come here," Lu Yun sincerely thanked them.
"You’re welcome." The two men put down the goods where Lu Yun had indicated and, hearing her thanks, both couldn’t help but blush.
