Chapter 291: Chapter 281 Awakening
Research Institute Canteen.
Lu Yun chewed her food listlessly, her mind pondering silently. Seeing her like this, Su Qiaoling and Wen Shan also fell into silence, not understanding why Lu Yun had such a strong reaction to the canteen food.
Despite their curiosity, they adhered to the principle of not asking or inquiring too much.
Their profession did not allow for an excess of curiosity.
Out of habit, even though both had deliberately slowed down their eating, by the time their lunch boxes were empty, Lu Yun had only eaten a small portion of her meal.
Outside the canteen, loud and rough singing voices could be heard.
"It’s ’Love My China.’" Wen Shan couldn’t help but hum along.
"Is the Guard Squad coming for lunch? Then we should leave now to avoid not having a place to sit later."
Lu Yun saw that those who had arrived earlier to eat were already packing up their cutlery and leaving. She then looked at her own lunch box, which still contained most of her meal, and decided it was impossible to finish in a short time. So she covered up her lunch box, ready to take it away.
She picked up her soup bowl from the table and drank down the contents in one gulp, relieved to find that, although it didn’t look appealing, the taste was properly seasoned.
"It’s okay, there’s plenty of space here; you should be able to find a seat. You can eat at your own pace," Su Qiaoling said, concerned that Lu Yun wasn’t full and thus spoke up.
"Yes, that’s right. I’ll go get you another bowl of soup. How can you be full without eating enough?" Wen Shan nodded in agreement.
"I’m already full," said Lu Yun as she stood up.
The two could only sigh helplessly. Su Qiaoling handed her lunch box to Wen Shan and took the soup bowls from the table, saying, "I need to make a trip to the logistics department. You accompany Xiaoyun back first."
"Can you really bring back that much stuff alone? We should go together," Lu Yun thought to herself. Wasn’t it just about finding the person in charge of the canteen? Why was a trip to the logistics department suddenly necessary? Was it to collect bedding for several people to take back?
"Don’t worry, even if all three of us went, we could not bring everything back in one go. Qiaoling is just going to sign for them, and then logistics staff will help deliver everything back," Wen Shan hurriedly explained with a smile.
"Right," nodded Su Qiaoling.
"That’s good," Lu Yun nodded with understanding, picked up her lunch box, and left the canteen. As she reached the doorway, she indeed saw guards from the Guard Squad outside.
She glanced at them and then turned to leave, her mind suddenly becoming clear.
It’s often said that starting is the hardest part, but with the support of the leadership and grandfather behind her, she had thought everything would have a smooth beginning. Yet, it turned out that... where there are people, there will always be a never-ending series of schemes and intrigues.
Such matters were internal affairs of the institute and really did not allow for her interference. She should have enough trust in Shitou to believe he could handle it all.
That’s right, Lu Yun took a deep breath. At any time and in any situation, she should trust Shitou.
Her mood instantly brightened again, a smile spreading across her face as she said to Wen Shan, "It’s nothing serious. I won’t need to go find Shitou this afternoon, so as not to disturb his work."
"Oh, okay." Wen Shan was taken aback. Why did she change her mind again?
Still, she did not ask further. As required by her superiors, during their mission, apart from ensuring Lu Yun’s safety, they also had to do their utmost to perform "nanny" duties. This meant, as long as it didn’t violate any principles, that whatever Lu Yun requested, or seemingly overlooked in the moment, she and Su Qiaoling had to try their best to accomplish, and if it were beyond their ability, they had to apply for support promptly.
"This afternoon, let’s just stay in our dorms and tidy up the place. Let’s see what Qiaoling can bring back later in terms of food? Then at five-thirty, you all can come over together, and we will stay home and cook hot pot, adding some noodles. It’s simple, convenient, and filling. Certainly, it will be more comfortable than eating in the cafeteria, and on such a cold day, there’s no need to run around outside."
"Sure," Wen Shan replied again.
On the way back, Lu Yun mulled over bringing out more fresh vegetables and fruits. It was only the first day; she could still explain them away as items she had brought from Capital City.
It was too cold outside, and everywhere you looked, the trees were bare, lacking any hint of green. She considered whether to grow some green onions and garlic sprouts at home, which would not only be pleasing to the eye but also would be something to eat.
She also thought about getting more mung beans, soybeans, peanuts, and peas, all of which could be sprouted.
Seeing that Lu Yun was lost in thought, Wen Shan did not interrupt her. On their way back to the family building, they encountered several other residents, brushing past them. Some seemed to give them an extra glance as they looked unfamiliar, but no one approached them to start a conversation.
Suddenly, it seemed like several children playing appeared downstairs in the family courtyard, making the place suddenly come alive.
Unable to resist, Lu Yun paused under her own dormitory building to watch them for a while.
"Do you like children too? These kids all seem so cute," Wen Shan followed her gaze and seeing the children play so happily, her mood instantly brightened.
"Children are best appreciated from a distance. Up close, they’re not cute anymore; they make you want to tear your hair out in frustration. Hence the saying about ’other people’s children’."
Lu Yun was reminded of her secretary, who occasionally couldn’t help but talk about her child. She would say that she frequently felt an irresistible urge to stuff her wild child back into her womb to reform him, as he was usually too rowdy and tortured her too much.
But sometimes, when she traveled with Lu Yun for several days, she would find herself missing that wild child and reflecting only on his good points, completely forgetting his mischievousness.
Lu Yun sighed inwardly and turned to go upstairs.
Shitou had said she might have suffered an accident in her past life, but whether it was only her or the entire airplane that had crashed remained unknown.
She hoped it was the former. The thought that if it was the latter, another wild child whom she knew might have lost their mother, suddenly weighed heavy on Lu Yun’s heart...
Everything was fine just a moment ago, so why did her mood suddenly plummet again?
Wen Shan’s inner self facepalmed. Could it be that they had all misjudged the situation? The person before her was clearly emotive, fearing that someone who seemed so obedient could suddenly become rebellious, possibly leading to some unexpected outcome.
Where was the promised peace of mind?
Wen Shan decided that she had to take time to communicate thoroughly with Su Qiaoling later; they could not afford to be unprepared for such a possibility, lest anything went wrong and created a mess.
