Chapter 289: Chapter 279: Different Personalities
Shitou, Zhan Hongtao, and Zhuang Jun had barely left when Su Qiaoling started to briskly clean up her dormitory as well.
Checking the time and seeing that it was almost time for dinner, she hurriedly took out her meal box and prepared to go downstairs to meet Wen Shan. They planned to bring back staples like rice, flour, meat, and vegetables from the cafeteria, and also to get three additional servings of meals.
Su Qiaoling knocked on Lu Yun’s door before she left.
At this time, the ones likely to knock on her door were either Su Qiaoling or Wen Shan. Lu Yun quickly opened the door, and sure enough, it was Su Qiaoling. She noticed the meal box in her hand, and with a radiant smile, asked, "Are you going to the cafeteria to eat?"
"Yes, if you don’t want to go, we can just bring the food back to eat in the same way," Su Qiaoling nodded gently, earnestly.
"Wait, I’ll grab my meal box and go with you. In this weather, the food will get cold by the time we bring it back. It’s better to eat in the cafeteria," Lu Yun said as she quickly took a meal box out of her luggage bag.
"Okay."
After Su Qiaoling replied, she stood still, waiting, without explaining that if they were going to eat in the cafeteria, there was actually no need to bring a meal box. Her gaze naturally wandered past the doorway. The layout of the house was the same as her own next door.
The living room was clean and tidy, obviously having been cleaned. The doors to the rooms were closed except for one, which was open. It appeared that Lu Yun had been organizing inside that room just before.
The living room seemed somewhat empty, aside from a dining table and four chairs, there was no other furniture. A large bag of Lu Yun’s belongings lay on the table, looking as though it had yet to be unpacked.
As Lu Yun unzipped her bag, Su Qiaoling could also see, aside from the meal box, there were other kitchen wares like pots, pans, and dishes.
"Let’s go, it’s good to give it a try. We don’t know how the cafeteria’s food tastes yet. But tonight, we can cook our own meals, since Shitou and I brought quite a few edible items in our luggage," Lu Yun said.
Before leaving, Lu Yun didn’t forget to slip the keys from the table into her pocket.
"What a coincidence, you’re coming down too. I was just about to go up and call you guys, seeing that it’s about time," the two met Wen Shan standing at the entrance of the stairwell.
Upon seeing that Xiaoyun was also coming along, she chuckled, "Xiaoyun, actually, Qiaoling and I could have brought back the meals just fine."
"It’s cold, and we would have to reheat the food anyway, plus we’re new here, and I want to get familiar with our surroundings," Lu Yun said, cheered by the sight of Wen Shan’s beaming smile.
Just by her appearance, the way she spoke, and her voice, she could easily be mistaken for a high school student. Who would guess that she was actually twenty-two years old? Appearances can be deceiving; without being told, no one would ever connect Wen Shan to a professional guard.
"That’s right, getting to know the new environment is indeed quite important. Later, I’ll also inquire when the next bus to the county town leaves. That way, if you’d like to visit the county town, we won’t be uninformed and at a loss. Sigh, we brought far less luggage than you, and there’s still so much we need to buy," she said.
The girl’s talkative nature revealed itself as soon as she spoke. Look at Su Qiaoling, who wouldn’t mention something like checking the bus schedule outright. However, Lu Yun had every reason to believe she would definitely learn that information privately at the first opportunity.
The others were also like Su Qiaoling, including that male comrade who had been replaced. Each of them was too solemn, not prone to laughter; even their occasional smiles were shallow. Though slightly austere, it was undeniable that they were all very composed, which provided a sense of safety to those around them.
Of course, this was not to say that Wen Shan’s capabilities in any way fell short compared to theirs. According to Shitou, her security level had been raised, so those chosen to be by her side could only be the cream of the crop. An unqualified guard simply wouldn’t be assigned to her.
Wen Shan’s appearance was more likely a disguise, which could lower people’s guard, making it hard to guess her identity at first glance.
Lu Yun couldn’t help but lift the corners of her mouth, "Shitou said he would be free during the day the day after tomorrow, so we can go to the county town then."
"Will Vice Director Pei also be going with us? That’s even better."
Wen Shan grinned at Lu Yun, very satisfied with the answer, knowing that going to the county town, a place with a lot of people, could be risky. Although she and Su Qiaoling could completely guarantee Lu Yun’s safety, it would naturally be better if the added security of Vice Director Pei’s presence were there.
Before setting off yesterday, she had earnestly enquired about her protection target—Lu Yun—from the other three, learning that this girl was particularly carefree.
Now seeing for herself, indeed she was.
Having an easygoing target was good, as the last thing those like her, tasked with protecting someone, wanted was the kind that was willful and foolishly bold, trying their hardest to give them the slip.
This mission was a long-term assignment, and if nothing unexpected occurred, she estimated she would be spending quite a lengthy period in close companionship with the young lady before her. Frankly, this mission was the most inconceivable one she’d ever taken on. It was just an ordinary-looking girl, the fiancée of Vice Director Pei—no, her current status should be "wife" of Vice Director Pei.
The order she was given was to protect her at any cost, even if it meant sacrificing anyone, including themselves, during critical moments. Failing to do so would be considered a severe dereliction of duty.
Though Wen Shan was utterly puzzled and couldn’t see the value in Lu Yun that justified such measures, she knew she had no right to curiosity. Questions that shouldn’t be asked mustn’t be uttered, not even half a word.
Luckily, it now appeared that the target of this mission was not only easing their concern but also held considerable kindness and trust towards them.
This was good, as it made their job much easier.
Lu Yun began walking quite slowly, admiring the scenery around her. To keep pace, Su Qiaoling and Wen Shan had no choice but to slow down as well.
After a few steps, Wen Shan couldn’t help herself, "Lu Yun, it’s almost time for the research facility guards to have their meal."
Huh?
Lu Yun checked her watch, which showed it was about eleven thirty-seven, "Do they have their meal at twelve?"
"Yes," Wen Shan confirmed with a nod, "Six in the morning, twelve at noon, and six in the evening, they usually stick to these times. The staff of the research facility, assistants, or family members tend to come over to get their meals in advance."
"Oh, why is that? Is the cafeteria too small and there aren’t enough seats? If we’re worried about not having a place to sit, we could just wait for someone to finish their meal before we sit down to eat. Or we could delay our meal for a bit."
Lu Yun was a bit confused and looked at Wen Shan with questioning eyes. What did the guard’s mealtime have to do with them? At worst, they could just eat a bit later themselves.
"The problem is, by the time they finish, there’s usually not much food left in the cafeteria," Wen Shan explained seriously, sensing that Lu Yun didn’t understand and feeling the need to point it out to her.
Is that so?
