Chapter 286: Chapter 276: The Strictest Protection
"Be safe on your journey, call us often, and write back frequently, woohoo... Xiaoyun, mommy really can’t bear to let you go..."
Even with mental preparation, the moment Lu Yun was actually leaving, Lu Aiguo, Xia Yuan, and Lu Jinsheng were all reluctant to let her go. Especially Xia Yuan, who, while holding Lu Yun’s hand and speaking, couldn’t help but start sobbing.
Lu Yun’s eyes turned red too, and she gave Xia Yuan a big hug, "Mom, I really can’t bear to leave you either."
"Don’t be like this, my dear, it’s about time to let the children go, or they’ll be pressed for time on the road," Lu Aiguo said softly to Xia Yuan, pulling her aside.
Upon hearing this, Xia Yuan let go immediately, wiped away her tears, and turned to Shitou with a stern face, warning him, "When you’re away from home, you’re not allowed to bully Xiaoyun or make her unhappy. If I find out you’ve upset Xiaoyun for any reason, I’ll hold you accountable, understand?"
"Mom, rest assured, I definitely won’t let Xiaoyun be unhappy," Shitou quickly assured with a wry smile, as it was one of the rare times Xia Yuan spoke to him with such severity.
"That’s right. Now hurry up and leave. Don’t rush too much on the road; it’s not safe," Xia Yuan said with a forlorn wave as the two got into the vehicles. The two cars quickly sped away, one after the other.
Once the Psychic Power Barrier was activated in the car, Lu Yun blinked, her tears still uncontrollably falling. It was her first time ever leaving her parents, and the feeling of parting was unbearable. Moreover, she felt heartless; she said she couldn’t bear to leave her mother, yet when it was time to leave, she did so without hesitation.
Shitou, sitting next to her in the back seat of the car, raised his hand gently to wipe her tears, "Don’t be sad. We’re not actually going very far this time. With a helicopter, it’s easy to make a round trip in one day."
"We can’t possibly use a helicopter for regular commuting, can we? What would others think? They might think that just because you’re in charge of the Dragon Squad and have been promoted at the research institute, you can abuse your position for personal gain. How would you manage your subordinates then? Let’s just stick to traveling on the ground as we used to," Lu Yun worried a bit too much.
"Hehe, don’t worry about it. Frankly, I’m even leeching off your status. Your security clearance is much higher than mine. In the Dragon Squad, even though you don’t hold an official position, if there’s anyone most qualified to call on that helicopter at any time, it would probably be you," Shitou said with a laugh as he tucked her stray hair behind her ear, his face full of smiles, "So no one would dare to accuse me of misusing public resources privately."
"Eh? Do they also know that I have a high security level?" Lu Yun asked, surprised.
"Yes, to ensure your safety to the greatest extent, important members of the Dragon Squad will receive secret orders to protect you at all costs during critical times," Shitou nodded.
"Even the Herbal Research Base operates under visible and covert conditions; in short, you are under the strictest protection," he added.
"I see," Lu Yun understood after a brief thought, "Then with such tight security, there shouldn’t be any need for someone to protect me in person, right?"
"That’s still necessary, but they’ll also pose as wives of the staff at the research facility. Don’t worry, your daily movements won’t be impacted. Outwardly, you’re a researcher at the Herbal Base, but your daily schedule is entirely up to you. If you want to leave the research facility, as long as you’re accompanied by your guard, it’s also allowed," Shitou said with a grin.
"Inside the research facility, you’ll have your independent lab and rest area, and no one can interfere with any of your activities. Just like at home, hang a ’Do Not Disturb’ sign, and no one will dare to barge in," Shitou chuckled.
"What happens to people who barge in?" Lu Yun asked, curious.
"Trespassers will die," Shitou said with squinted eyes, very seriously.
"That sounds harsh," Lu Yun clicked her tongue, "What if I don’t come out for half a month or a month? Won’t they suspect that I’m eating something inside?"
"Your rest room will have a small kitchen, stocked with fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, and enough dry food and water to last you a month," Shitou patiently explained.
"However, if you really do need to go into seclusion for more than three days, it’s best to say so in advance. Otherwise, after three days, your guard will try to contact you from outside. If you don’t come out for ten days and haven’t given any prior notice, then I’ll have to personally come to check on your safety."
"I see. Don’t worry, I’m not that unreliable. I’ll let you know before I go into seclusion, unless I make a sudden breakthrough; I won’t keep calling you over frequently."
Lu Yun smiled at Shitou, knowing that these were requests based on her own situation, "Does that mean that as long as I’m at the research institute, I can enter the space anytime I want?"
"That’s fine, but it would be best if you could leave me a sign when you enter the space." Otherwise, he would really be unsure, Shitou suggested.
"Sure, whenever I enter the space, I’ll leave a unique plant from the space on the desk," Lu Yun agreed with a smile, knowing that many of the herbs and plants in her space didn’t exist on Earth.
"Mhm," Shitou felt that this was the best solution, and he continued to Lu Yun, "The first batch of Elixir you took out last time should be enough for at least half a month. When we get there, at most I’ll drop you at our quarters, then I’m afraid I won’t even have the time to help you settle in before I have to leave."
Shitou sounded apologetic, "Settle in at the family compound for a week first, and then report to the research institute."
"Yeah, go ahead and do your work. Setting up is a piece of cake for me; I’ll arrange everything myself." Lu Yun was mentally prepared for Shitou not being able to accompany her at home often, so she found nothing surprising about it. Isn’t that what military spouses go through?
"..."
Hearing Lu Yun’s understanding response, Shitou felt not just a lack of happiness, but rather a sense of loss. He became tangled up in his thoughts, wondering if his foolish girl being so sensible and independent without relying on him was a good thing or not.
"What are you thinking about? You seem unhappy," Lu Yun noticed Shitou’s troubled face, and reviewed her own answer—it was good, standard, and quite "virtuous," right?
Lu Yun thought over her response, feeling it was perfect. She even started to feel a bit smug. Hmm, where could he find another fiancée who understood him like she did? If he missed this village, there would be no such shop again. But why did Shitou seem dissatisfied?
Feeling disgruntled, Lu Yun pinched Shitou, "Did you express the wrong emotion? Shouldn’t you be moved, hugging me and saying, ’Wife, you’re too good’?"
Is a hug possible? This benefit was not to be missed.
Shitou’s mood instantly turned from gloom to joy, swiftly wrapping his arms around her with a Psychic Power Barrier to shield them from view, "Wife, you really are too good."
