Chapter 234: Chapter 226 Recognition
Pei Kun’s expression as he sat next to Wen Sheng, who was driving, prompted a twitch at the corner of Wen Sheng’s mouth, revealing a grimace of discomfort.
Shitou seemed to have his eyes closed, but in fact, he was using his spiritual power to pay attention to the two people in the car. Seeing this, he couldn’t help but purse his lips in a quiet smile, his austere face finally softening a bit, no longer appearing as cold and hard.
However, his smile was fleeting, and naturally, Pei Kun failed to catch it. But Shitou’s face softened, which he could keenly feel, and thus, encouraged, he spoke with even more zeal.
The car quickly arrived at the residential complex, and when Shitou got out to be checked, the on-duty security personnel all paused in surprise upon seeing him. Shitou secretly raised an eyebrow—is it possible that the resemblance Pei Kun spoke of was genuinely that striking?
So when Shitou finally met Pei Qingyuan and personally experienced the resemblance Pei Kun had described, he understood why the security squad’s people were momentarily taken aback yet didn’t behave too inappropriately, causing the Pei Family and others to regard Shitou with the impression of being composed, possessing the air of a leader.
Pei Kun actually bore a three-point resemblance to Pei Qingyuan, which was why Shitou felt a sense of familiarity upon seeing him.
As Shitou stepped out of the car and walked toward them, Pei Qingyuan, Zhang Min, and, following behind them, Pei Shaohua and Ding Luoluo, couldn’t help but become excited. Seeing a photograph and meeting someone in person are, after all, entirely different experiences.
Zhang Min was the most emotional; she hurried forward a few steps and grabbed Shitou’s hand, tears flowing nonstop. "Shitou, is it really you, Shitou? Finally, in this lifetime, your grandfather and I get to see you."
Shitou’s body stiffened briefly, allowing Zhang Min to hold his hand without pulling away. He opened his mouth but for a moment didn’t know what to call her.
Calling her grandmother now doesn’t seem quite appropriate, does it?
Seeing Shitou’s awkwardness, Pei Qingyuan sighed. In his eagerness, he indeed rushed things by having Shitou brought to the family estate to meet everyone before definitive confirmation. If it turns out that Shitou really is of the Pei bloodline, that’s great, but if not, it would be terribly awkward for Shitou himself.
However, observing Zhang Min’s impatience and knowing that the Lu Family’s visit to the complex the day before had already been witnessed by many, it was clear that whether or not Shitou was a descendant of the Pei Family, curious parties would inquire regardless. With this in mind, the need for caution seemed unnecessary.
Hence, Pei Qingyuan cleared his throat, "Let’s talk inside. Everyone’s waiting to take a blood sample from Shitou. The earlier they get it, the sooner we can have the results."
"Right, let’s go in and talk. What sense does it make to stand here at the door?" Zhang Min nodded repeatedly, pulling on Shitou’s hand to go inside, but halfway there, she stopped, "I’ve been confused. I haven’t even introduced you to the family."
So Zhang Min pulled him along and began introductions, starting with Pei Qingyuan, "This is your grandfather. Call him grandfather." She urged Shitou, who snapped to attention and saluted Pei Qingyuan, yet remained silent. Zhang Min couldn’t hide her impatience.
Pei Qingyuan patted his shoulder and nodded.
"Grandfather," Shitou followed suit agreeably, and having broken the ice, found it much easier to address her as grandmother, as well as calling the others his uncle, little brother, and little sister.
Zhang Min was both joyous and sorrowful at being called grandmother by Shitou. If she had harbored any doubts upon seeing the photo yesterday, seeing the person in the flesh today gave her a strong intuition that the man before her was indeed her own grandson.
She fixated on his face the whole way there, not even blinking, "Did your father give you the name Shitou?"
"Mhm, dad said that I was only as big as a cat when I was born, skinny and small, and he was afraid I wouldn’t survive. He heard that you have to give a child a lowly name for them to thrive. But he wasn’t willing to name me something like Goudan or Gou Sheng, yet he considered Shitou to be tough, abundant everywhere, meeting the requirements for a lowly name. So, he named me Shitou."
Looking at the kind-faced old man before him, Shitou couldn’t maintain his usual stoic and reticent demeanor.
"Your father... he really was smart," Zhang Min blinked, her nose tingling with emotion, "The name Shitou sounds so pleasant and meaningful." "Do you still remember what your father looked like? It’s such a pity you and your mother didn’t even manage to leave a single photograph."
"..."
As the conversation turned to his parents, Shitou’s expression immediately darkened, and he fell silent.
"Ahem, why am I even talking about this?" Seeing Shitou silent, Zhang Min thought he had forgotten and was instantly filled with disappointment.
"Give me paper and pen, and I can draw him," Shitou said softly, his voice was low, yet it thundered in the ears of Zhang Min and Pei Qingyuan.
"What did you say? Can you really draw it?"
Zhang Min almost lost her composure, "You can draw?"
"Never tried but drawing my father’s face shouldn’t be a problem." Without hesitation, Shitou nodded. His father’s features and smile were etched into his memory like carvings. His spiritual power was sufficient, and though he might not capture his exact essence, he was confident he could draw an accurate likeness to a photograph.
Actually, from the first glance at the two elders before him, he knew the probability that they were his paternal grandparents was exceedingly high. And for good reason—if his resemblance to his grandfather could be dismissed as a coincidence, then how could the similarity between his father and grandmother, with faint traces of his grandfather, also be considered a stroke of luck?
If looks were so alike and the stories behind them nearly identical, could this still be dismissed as mere coincidence, or would it be stretching the bounds of serendipity too far?
"That’s wonderful."
Zhang Min grasped Shitou’s hand, speeding up her pace, her tone brimming with anticipation, "Let’s have Old Zhang and his team finish drawing the blood samples, then you can draw... Ah, it’s already past eleven, let’s eat first. We’ll have plenty of time after lunch for you to draw at your leisure."
Pei Qingyuan, too, couldn’t help but feel expectant, Pei Shaohua, Pei Kun, and Ding Luoluo shared the anticipation, their faces showing surprise—they hadn’t realized he was so talented. His resume from yesterday was impressive enough: a man seemingly capable of anything.
To think only upon meeting him in person did they realize, what he knew likely far exceeded what was written on his resume.
Inside the house, "Old Zhang" quickly drew blood samples from Shitou, Pei Qingyuan, and Zhang Min, carefully marking them before placing each into a portable case, then bowing respectfully to Pei Qingyuan and Zhang Min.
"Rest assured, I will start the tests personally as soon as I return and strive to produce the results as quickly as possible."
"No matter what time it is, let us know the moment you have the results," Pei Qingyuan nodded, issuing his instructions in a gentle tone.
"Yes," Old Zhang nodded in agreement and quickly packed up to leave.
