Chapter 232: Chapter 224 Attention
Mistaken identity??
The two shared an awkward smile with the Lu Family members before sitting down.
Zhang Min passed a photo of Shitou to Pei Shaohua, and Pei Kun leaned over directly in front of Pei Shaohua to take a look. Upon seeing it, both of them suddenly realized.
Everyone was present, and the two parties continued to delve into the main topic.
...
It took a full three hours before both parties had finally clearly relayed the events that had occurred over the years. During this time, Lu Yun and Ding Luoluo had almost remained silent, simply listening intently.
In the end, Pei Qingyuan sincerely said to the Lu Family, "It is Shitou’s fortune to have met all of you. Regardless of whether Shitou is Shaojie’s child, we acknowledge him due to this connection."
Too many tears had been shed. As they left the study, everyone’s eyes were red, which was just as well since no one was in a position to tease anyone else.
The sky outside had darkened, and it was well past dinner time. Persisted upon by Pei Qingyuan and Zhang Min, the Lu Family stayed for supper.
With guests at home and based on Zhang Min’s prior private instructions to her, the meal served was not only in generous portions but also more lavish than usual.
Regrettably, the rich meal did little to pique everyone’s appetite. After the intense emotions, they all were somewhat lacking in hunger, leaving much food untouched, which inadvertently led to Jin Sao grumbling to herself, thinking she had overestimated and prepared too much.
After supper, Pei Qingyuan personally escorted the Lu Family to the courtyard gate with his family.
Upon returning home, Pei Qingyuan’s first task was to head to the study. Knowing what he was about to do, Zhang Min followed him in and watched as he made several phone calls.
Silently waiting for Pei Qingyuan to finish the calls, Zhang Min, with tears in her eyes, asked, "Is that DNA really so miraculous that it can determine if there is a blood relation between two people?"
"It is true," Pei Qingyuan nodded. "This technology was researched abroad in the ’50s. We have it now too. Just patiently wait a few more days, and everything will come to light."
"I hope he is, and yet I hope he isn’t..."
Zhang Min finally couldn’t hold back anymore and burst into heavy sobs in Pei Qingyuan’s embrace.
Pei Qingyuan comfortingly patted her back, tears streaming down his own face, his mouth moved, but he didn’t offer words of consolation, knowing crying it out was far better than holding it in.
Pei Shaohua, Pei Kun, and Ding Luoluo stood silently outside the door until the crying inside the study had subsided before they knocked and entered.
--
"It’s probably a nine out of ten shot this time, now we just wait for the DNA test results to find out the final outcome. If Shitou’s aunt and uncle in Yushu Village knew it would turn out like this, they probably wouldn’t have treated Shitou the way they did," Lu Aiguo finally spoke out after the car had driven some distance from the courtyard.
"The book on moral wisdom says, ’The heart is the root of one’s descendants; no plant ever flourishes without a root’—only a person with kindness in their heart can raise descendants who are kind," Lu Yun reflected. Her ’heart’ here meant ’heart of kindness’, "And kindness always leads to good karma."
"That’s exactly right," laughed Lu Yun’s aunt. "People who do nothing wrong aren’t afraid of ghosts knocking at their door in the middle of the night. If that couple knew about Shitou’s identity and background, they probably wouldn’t even be able to sleep easy."
"This is far from a sure thing. Don’t go around gossiping, and if anyone asks, you can’t say anything. Even after it’s confirmed, don’t use it to show off," Lu Yun’s uncle said gravely and earnestly. The status of the Pei Family was far beyond what they had imagined, and the confidence he had gained from Lu Yun’s alchemy skills couldn’t help but waver.
"Don’t worry, Dad," Lu Aiguo and Xia Yuan said as they nodded. Lu Yun’s aunt also laughed, "We know, there’s nothing to show off about this sort of thing."
"Hmm, Grandpa, I’ve remembered it too," Lu Yun also hurriedly complied obediently.
"It’s either a blessing or a curse, but if it’s a curse, you can’t escape it."
With a sigh, Uncle Lu mused that Shitou now had a family to share the medicinal baths with, but could one really know whether bringing this matter to light would result in fortune or disaster? After all, human hearts are unfathomable.
The gap in status was too massive.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that in front of the Pei Family, the Lu Family had no power to fight back. If the Pei Family members were truly sincere and treated them as kindly as they seemed today, it would be fine. But if they looked down on them in their hearts, then what would become of the Lu Family was really hard to say.
"The ship will straighten itself when it reaches the bridge, anyway. There’s no reason for them to fall out over a potentially win-win situation," Lu Aiguo said.
Lu Aiguo could understand Uncle Lu’s worries; the future was always full of unpredictable events, and no matter how well the Pei Family members were behaving at the moment, how they might react in the face of significant interests was indeed hard to predict.
Lu Yun, however, wasn’t worried about all the hearsay, confident not only in Shitou but also in herself.
--
The next day, at a research institute’s dormitory.
Shitou was still feeling half-asleep and bewildered when he suddenly received a call from Lu Yun, saying that his biological grandparents had been found and were asking him to come back and acknowledge them.
Over the phone, the details weren’t clear, but his heart was already rushing to do so.
Thinking about the grandparents he was about to meet, Shitou calmed his excited emotions. Then, he delightedly thought of Xiaoyun’s upcoming birthday; originally, he thought he wouldn’t be able to return to celebrate with her, but now he had this excellent excuse to take leave—
...
Previously, Pei Qingyuan had personally gone to pick up guests at the entrance of the residential complex, and later had personally seen them out with his family, which soon garnered considerable covert attention. The complex was relatively enclosed, but news spread quickly within it; whenever there was the slightest disturbance in any household, most of the residents would quickly come to know of it.
Once curious residents began to investigate, they found out that the Lu Family were merely ordinary merchants, which puzzled many.
The next day, visitors from the Pei Family promptly arrived at their doorstep.
"What were you up to yesterday? The whole complex is buzzing about it. Who was so important that you personally went to the gate to meet them and even send them off yourself? I can’t figure it out," Ke Yongjia, who had been neighbors with Pei Qingyuan for decades, asked curiously as he sipped his tea in the Pei Family’s living room.
It wasn’t strange for him to be curious, as those allowed to live and buy houses in this complex were not ordinary people. They were individuals with some status, and at their age, they were usually the ones being fawned over. There were very few individuals for whom they would personally offer such a reception.
"It’s about news of Shaojie," Pei Qingyuan replied, not intending to keep anything from his old friend Ke Yongjia.
"What, you really found him? Wow, that’s something," Ke Yongjia expressed his surprise, followed by genuine happiness for him.
The tale of Pei Qingyuan’s eldest son was well-known to many, and even the fact that Pei Shaohua’s health suffered as a result was common knowledge. Such tragedies weren’t unique within their circle; the Pei Family’s case wasn’t isolated, but those who managed to safely retrieve their children were also quite common.
"When can you bring Shaojie home? I bet his son might even have a son by now," Ke Yongjia laughed heartily.
"It seems our fate with Shaojie is thin, and we won’t have the chance to meet him again," Ke Yongjia said with a sense of loss.
