Chapter 209: Chapter 201: Wild Picnic (Part 6)
"I remember someone once said, ’Money is a person’s courage,’ and that does make quite a bit of sense," Wu Xiuyu said with a laugh.
"Actually, I’m more of the opinion that knowledge changes fate," Feng Sijia glanced at Lu Yun again, "Look at Lu Yun’s family, so wealthy, and yet she ended up coming to B University to study. You guys don’t know, my aunt always boasts in front of my mom about how it’s useless for me to attend university in Capital City, claiming that the job I’ll get after graduation and the salary I’ll earn will probably not be as good as what my cousin gets. It makes my mom not even want to respond to her boasting.
Now she’s run out of things to say. Even if the job I get assigned after graduation is just as bad as she said, and not as good as my cousin’s, at least I was in the same class as Lu Yun, a ’big shot.’ If she dares to belittle me again, isn’t she implicitly insulting Lu Yun too? Hmph, I’d like to see if she still has the guts to gossip."
"That’s just jealousy on your aunt’s part," Wu Xiuyu burst into laughter.
"Exactly, she’s actually just jealous of my mom, which is why she belittles me," Feng Sijia said indignantly, "She barely knows a few big characters herself and has been a factory worker her whole life, while my cousin was never as good at studying as I was and barely managed to finish high school. She’s always felt inferior to my mom and finally, my cousin gave her a tiny bit of capital to brag about. But then I got into B University, and how could she feel anything but unbalanced inside?
But she’s an elder, and my mom doesn’t like to lower herself to argue, so what can I do? Aside from liking to boast about her son, my aunt doesn’t really have any other faults."
Wu Xiuyu nodded in agreement, her laughter seemed quite mean-spirited, "All mothers like to brag about their children, that’s not really a big problem. Your aunt is just unlucky, trying to show off only to end up being even more devastated."
"Hahaha, Xiuyu, I feel much better hearing you say that..." Feng Sijia also clutched her stomach, unable to stop laughing, and Wu Xiuyu joined her in raucous laughter.
Lu Yun looked at the two laughing together, her lips curling into a smile; suddenly, she felt that not having even a single close girlfriend by her side made her life seem particularly bleak, lonely, and dull.
With this thought, she turned to Feng Sijia, "I have some throat-soothing lozenges at home. Come find me on Monday to get some; you can mail them to your mom first."
"Really? Waaaa, Lu Yun, I’m so touched, I’ll definitely cling to your ’thick thighs’ from now on. My fortune for the rest of my life might depend on you," Feng Sijia said, bursting with joy, and then pretendingly wiped "tears" as she spoke to Lu Yun.
"You might as well give up on that idea. After you graduate, you’ll have to accept whatever job you’re assigned, even if the salary and benefits aren’t as good as your cousin’s," said Wu Xiuyu with a gleeful face, dousing her with cold water while also suggesting a wicked plan.
"You’re too bad, how dare you come up with such a bad idea? If I really went through with that, not to mention my uncle, aunt, and cousin swallowing me alive, even my mom wouldn’t let me off easily. Do you want to make me homeless? Would you take me in? Too bad you’re not a guy, or else I would’ve cling to you for life," Feng Sijia teased.
Feng Sijia pounced on Wu Xiuyu, tickling her until she laughed so hard she could hardly breathe, gasping, "Spare me, I won’t dare again..." Feng Sijia didn’t care and kept on tickling her mercilessly, while Lu Yun watched the lively scene, thoroughly entertained.
The two carried on until the class monitor, Xie Yuanwu, arrived with four other boys. It was then that they finally calmed down.
"Everyone from the class is here today, thirty-five people, perfect to split into five groups of seven, mixed genders in each group. The others have already been sorted, and I’ve brought your group’s four boys over," Xie Yuanwu announced. "Take care of each other. We’ll start by hiking up the mountain, then collect some spring water on our way down, and meet back here at eleven o’clock sharp."
After Xie Yuanwu finished speaking, he walked off, leaving behind four lanky boys, two of whom were holding plastic buckets. Lu Yun, Feng Sijia, and Wu Xiuyu looked around and indeed, everyone had already gathered into groups of seven.
"Out of these four classmates, it’s likely that only Lu Yun might not recognize them—Lin Jing, Li Yu, Chen Tongfang, and Mo Ning," Wu Xiuyu said with a mischievous smile as she introduced them to Lu Yun.
Lu Yun couldn’t help but smile and did not decline Wu Xiuyu’s kindness, telling her that she actually knew every classmate from her class.
Even though she hadn’t interacted with everyone regularly, at the beginning of freshman year, there had been a gathering where everyone introduced themselves, which was enough for her to firmly remember the name and face of each of her classmates.
Lin Jing, Li Yu, Chen Tongfang, and Mo Ning all greeted the three girls with smiles, and the seven of them quickly became familiar with one another.
The pots and food did not have to be carried up the mountain; each group was accompanied by boys carrying two empty buckets up the mountain, but most of the girls had brought their own water bottles.
Lu Yun was no exception, and on her back, she carried the military aluminum canteen that everyone seemed to be using at the time. The old-fashioned green, round canteen looked very familiar and, when taken seriously, could really hold a lot.
Checking the time, it was not yet eight-thirty, and everyone chose the northern route. Fenghuang Ridge was composed of several mountain peaks linked together, divided into north, central, and south routes, with the northern route being the longest and most perilous.
In the end, no one made it to the summit. Upon reaching the "Divine Water" site on Fenghuang Ridge, Lu Yun emptied the water from her military canteen and filled it with some to drink, indeed finding the water to be as exceptional as its reputation suggested, sweet with a hint of fresh grass. After everyone had taken their turn to fill up, she secretly collected quite a bit of it in her space.
Ascending to the summit from the northern route was not only treacherous but also time-consuming, so eventually, no one proceeded further up. Instead, they lingered around the area until it was about time to head back.
Throughout the journey, Lu Yun quickly noted the differences in personality amongst Lin Jing, Li Yu, Chen Tongfang, and Mo Ning.
Lin Jing was a straightforward person. The four boys took turns carrying two water buckets, with Lin Jing paired up with Chen Tongfang. However, Chen Tongfang found various ways to slack off, spending much of the trip entertaining the girls. Not only did he chat with the girls in his own group, but he would also go to other groups to joke around from time to time.
The water bucket was almost always carried by Lin Jing. Despite being taken advantage of, Lin Jing didn’t get annoyed. If Chen Tongfang didn’t take the initiative to take over, Lin Jing would silently carry on with the task.
The three girls thought about helping Lin Jing with the water buckets, but he wouldn’t let them.
Li Yu and Mo Ning, on the other hand, were much more conscientious as partners. They swapped turns carrying the buckets at intervals and would occasionally remind Chen Tongfang to relieve Lin Jing. Eventually, even Feng Sijia and Wu Xiuyu couldn’t help but join in with the reminders.
After being reminded a few times, Chen Tongfang simply went to another group to chat and took a long time before he was willing to come back.
Seeing this, Feng Sijia, Wu Xiuyu, Li Yu, and Mo Ning all couldn’t help but mutter, "That’s really too much."
Only Lin Jing himself didn’t mind, "He’s always been like this."
Li Yu and Mo Ning sighed as well, and in the end, the three of them ended up taking turns to carry the two water buckets.
When they reached the rendezvous point and accounted for everyone, they reboarded the bus and found a spot with low elevation, sheltered from the wind, suitable for setting up camp and cooking. Everyone then began to work cooperatively—some set up makeshift stoves, others gathered dry branches, and each group had to send people to collect the food ingredients and kitchenware.
